This plate is subjected to a constant cooling rate and flexed repeatedly until the binder layer breaks; the temperature at which the first cra

The plates shall be kept

、 flat and protected from corrosion when not in use. Any plate that becomes visibly curved or corroded shall be discarded. 5.2 Plate preparation equipment, used for application of the melted sample, and including: 5.2.1 Magnet block with a flat and smooth surface (Figure 1) holding one to three plate

The support shall be horizontal and include an air bubble level and level adjustment screws. 5.

、3 Fraass breaking apparatus, as shown in Figure 3, consisting of the parts described in 5.3.1 to 5.3.3. NOTE Manual apparatus can be replaced by semi-automatic or automatic apparatus reproducing the same conditions. 5.3.1 Bending apparatus, as shown in Figure 4. The clearance between the two tubes,

、when assembled so that one can move longitudinally within the other, shall not exceed 1 mm. The tubes shall be made of a material that is of low thermal expansion (linear expansion coefficient: 60 Stem outside diameter mm 6,0 to 7,0 Bulb length mm 10 to 16 Bulb outside diameter mm stem diameter Scal

、ative) Examples Two examples are given to illustrate the adjustment of expected Fraass breaking point (Tj) and how reach a reported result following the conditions in 7.3 and shown in the flow diagram, Figure 7. Example 1: Fraass breaking point shall be determined for an unknown bitumen grade 70/100

、 (from EN 12591). Expected result (educated guess 1) is -10 C (= initial Tj). First determination: Flexure is started at 0 C (e.g. 10 C above Tj). Result T0= -12 C. Tjis adjusted to -12 C. Second determination: Flexure is started at -2 C (e.g. 10 C above adjusted Tj). Result T1= -13 C. The absolute

、difference between T0and T1is 1 C, which means that T0and T1are valid determinations. The reported result is the mean value ( -12,5 C) rounded to the nearest whole number. In this case the result is -13 C. Example 2: Fraass breaking point shall be determined for an unknown bitumen grade 500/650 (fro

、m EN 12591). Expected result (educated guess 1) is -29 C (= initial Tj). First determination: Flexure is started at -19 C (e.g. 10 C above Tj). Result T0= -26 C. The absolute difference between Tjand T0is 3 C, which means that two new determinations T2and T3shall be performed. The first determinatio

、n T0is only used to adjust Tjto -26 C. Second determination: Flexure is started at -16 C (e.g. 10 C above the adjusted Tj). Result T2= -30 C. It is only in determination of T0that it is a strict requirement that the absolute difference between Tjand T0is 2 C or less for T0to be a valid determination

、. It shall be the intention in the following determinations to achieve 1If values for penetration and softening point ring and ball are available for unknown bitumen samples, initial estimation of Tjbased on Bitumen Test Data Chart (Heukeloms diagram) can be very advantageous. David Whiteoak: The Sh

、ell Bitumen Handbook, 2003 DIN EN 12593:2015-09 EN 12593:2015 (E) 17 a maximum absolute difference between Tjand the determined Fraass breaking point of 2 C but not a strict requirement. In this case based on T2 it is decided to adjust Tjto -28 C. Third determination: Flexure is started at -18 C (e.

、g. 10 C above the adjusted Tj). Result T3= -26 C. The absolute difference between T2and T3is above 3 C, which means that two new plates shall be prepared and tested. Tjis maintained at -28 C. Fourth determination: Flexure is started at -18 C (e.g. 10 C above Tj). Result T4= -31 C. It is decided not

、to adjust Tjfurther which is kept at -28 C. Fifth determination: Flexure is started at -18 C (e.g. 10 C above Tj). Result T5= -26 C. The absolute difference between T4and T5is above 3 C, which means that T4and T5are not by themselves valid determinations, but further testing is stopped. The reported

、 result (based on T2, T3, T4and T5) is the mean value ( -28,25 C) rounded to the nearest whole number. In this case the result is -28 C with determinations in the range from -26 C to -31 C. The result is valid, since the range of the four determinations is less than the reproducibility given in Table 1. DIN EN 12593:2015-09
