SCOPE 1.1 This Standard applies to electrically operated clotheswashing* and dishwashing* machi

、nes including such washing machines in combination with other devices (such as combination washing and drying machines*) for potentials of 600 volts or less, intended to be used in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. *For convenience only, the short terms “clothes wash

、ers“, “dishwashers“ and “washer-dryers“ are used herein. 1.2 This Standard applies to both cord-connected and permanently con- nected machines for use in domestic or commercial locations and includes machines provided with coin- or ticket-operated mechanisms, conventional wringer machines, tumbler,

、agitator and spinner machines, combination washer-dryers, extractors of the centrifugal type and dishwashing machines of the rack and conveyor type. 1.3 This Standard does not cover dry-cleaning equipment. 2. DEFINITIONS 2.1 The following definitions apply in this Standard: Conventional clothes wash

、ers means clothes washers which perform only washing and wringing operations; Cord-connected means machines which are connected to the electrical supply by a flexible power supply cord; Permanently connected means machines which are connected to the electrical supply by means of conduit, armoured, o

、r non-metallic-sheathed cable; Recessed machines means machines which are intended: (a) To be supported by the floor; (b) To rest against a wall in the rear; (c) To rest against a wall, a cabinet, or another appliance on one side; and (d) To rest against a cabinet or another appliance on the other s

、ide. A counter top may cover the machine and the adjacent cabinets and appliances. A recessed machine is not intended for permanent attachment to the building structure or to adjacent cabinets or appliances; Wall-insert machines means machines which are intended to be permanently attached to the bui

、lding structure and mounted in a wall or other vertical surface of a building or in a cabinet. 3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Where reference is made to other publications, such references shall be considered to refer to the latest edition approved by the organization issuing that publication. 8 CSA ST

、ANDARD C22.2 No. 53 3.2 General requirements applicable to this Standard are given in CSA Standard C22.2 No. 0, Definitions and General Requirements. 3.3 Washing machines in combination with other devices shall be investi- gated also under those additional Standards covering such devices (e.g. washe

、r-dryers shall comply with this Standard and also with the require- ments of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 112, Clothes-Drying Machines). Where more than one Standard applies preference shall be given to that Standard considered to require the highest minimum standard of construction. 4. CONSTRUCTION 4.1 G

、eneral 4.1.1 Electric component parts shall be types specifically approved for the use intended, or shall be investigated as an integral part of, and with the equipment. 4.1.2 Electric components and auxiliary electric equipment shall con- form to the particular Standard covering such components and

、 shall also be suitable for the particular application. 4.1.3 When failure of switches (timer, float, pressure, etc.) or other controls, during normal or improper operation or use, is likely to result in flooding of the equipment, the machine shall meet the requirements of Clause 6.13. 4.2 Enclosure

、s 4.2.1 General 4.2.1.1 Electrical equipment shall have enclosures of non-com- bustible absorption-resistant material except as permitted by Clauses 4.2.1.2 to 4.2.1.4, which shall enclose all live parts excluding supply cords. Tubs, frames, belt guards etc., shall have the strength and rigidity nec

、essary to resist the abuses to which they are liable to be subjected without increasing the fire and accident hazard due to loosening or displacement of parts, partial collapse with resulting reduction of spacings, or other serious defects. 4.2.1.2 Unless electrical equipment is otherwise enclosed,

、the walls and tops of free-standing machines forming an enclosure for live parts shall be of: (a) Noncombustible material; (b) Self-extinguishing plastic composition, as determined by ASTM Standard D635, Method of Test for Flammability of Rigid Plastics over 0.050 inch in Thickness; (c) Combustible

、material, coated with a suitable fire-retardant paint; or (d) Slow-burning combustible material. Where (d) applies, live parts including wiring shall be spaced not less than 1/2 inches from such material, unless suitable barriers (e.g. metal baffles, wire screens) of noncombustible material are prov

ELECTRIC WASHING MACHINES 9 Where (b) or (c) apply, and electrical equipment is not otherwise suit- ably enclosed, provision shall be made to prevent mo

、lten metal, burning insulation, or the like from falling upon the supporting surface beneath the machine or on the enclosure bottom if tests show that a fire hazard is liable to occur (see Clause 6.10); bare or insulated live parts shall be located at least 2 inches above the level of the lower edge

、s of the side walls or the enclosure bottom, except that switches, having open contacts, shall be located at least 15 inches above the machine supporting surface or enclosure bottom unless suitable barriers or the equivalent are provided. Where (c) applies, and electrical equipment is not otherwise

、suitably enclosed, the side walls shall, in addition to the foregoing, extend to within 3 inches of the floor. 4.2.1.4 Recessed machines shall have front panels which comply with the requirements in Clause 4.2.1.2 and enclosure bottoms which comply with the requirements in Clause 4.2.1.3. NOTE: Sinc

、e recessed machines of the “skeleton“ type may be enclosed by wooden panels on installation, such machines will be judged under the requirements of Clause 4.2.1.2(d). 4.2.1.5 Top and side walls forming enclosures for live parts of machines, shall be firmly held in place by fastening means that requi

、er openings in external enclosures shall be constructed, located, or baffled so as to prevent a rod, as specified in Clauses 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3, from being inserted to touch bare live parts or coil windings. 4.2.2.2 An opening which will permit a %-inch diameter rod to enter an enclosure, shall not

、 permit such a rod to contact bare live parts or coil windings within the space indicated by the dimension “X“ in Figure 1.
