29、his method determines the flame spread properties of a textile material when a specimen is supported at an angle of 45“ and a flame is applied to its upper surface for 1 s. This method does not apply to textile products that cannot be tested because of size and/or shape such as shoe laces, textile f
30、loor coverings, mattresses, wigs and textiles that cannot be compressed to 6 mm thickness or less by the pressure exerted by the holder clamps. The testing and evaluation of a product against this method may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does no
31、t purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this method has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any existing applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use. 32、RINCIPLE Specimens cut from the textile are mounted in specimen holders, dried under specified conditions, cooled in a desiccator and supported in the testing apparatus at an angle of 45“. A standardized flame is applied to the surface near the lower end for 1 s. The total time required for the spec
33、imen to ignite and flaming to proceed up the fabric a distance of 127 mm is recorded as the flame spread time. Fabrics having a raised-fibre surface (Note 1) are brushed before the test, and any ignition or fusing of the base of such fabrics is noted. APPLICABLE PUBLICATIONS The following publicatio

40、5.1 Five specimens, each 50 x 165 mm, are required for the test (Notes 3 and 4). The long dimension shall be in the direction of more rapid burning, and the surface to be tested shall be that surface showing more rapid burning (Note 5). 5.1.1 To determine the direction in which to cut the specimens
41、and the surface to test, make preliminary trials (using 50 x 165 mm specimens) in accordance with the procedure given in section 6. Test specimens on both surfaces and in the lengthwise and crosswise directions of the fabric. Prepare specimens in accordance with par. 5.2 and 5.3. Mark out each speci
42、men on the surface of the sample in accordance with par. 5.1. For each specimen identify, by suitable means, the surface to be tested and the end toward which burning is more rapid. Cut out the specimens. Specimens from garments or other assemblies may include all layers held in the relative positio
43、n they occupy however the total thickness of the clamped specimen must not exceed 6 mm. 5.2 5.3 6. PROCEDURE 6.1 Conduct the tests in a draft-free room with the apparatus at room temperature (approximately 20C). It is recommended that the relative humidity in the room not be greater than 70%. Mount
44、and clamp each specimen in a specimen holder (frame) so that the specimen is gripped along the top edge and down both sides. The identified end (par. 5.2) will be at the top of the frame, and the lower edge will be in line with the bottom of the top member of the frame. With the brushing device show
45、n in Figure 2, brush each specimen having a raised-fibre surface once against the lay of the nap or pile, using a single, smooth action if possible (Note 6). 6.2 6.3 Place the mounted specimens in an oven at 105 -I 2C for 1 h, remove them from the oven and cool them in the desiccator for not less th
46、an 15 min nor more than 2 h. 6.4 Check the timing device. With the stop button depressed, press the start button. The timer must record 1.0 f 0.05 s (the time of application of the flame to the surface of the specimen) for one cycle of the mechanism. Adjust if necessary. 6.5 Open the fuel control va
47、lve, ignite the gas, and allow approximately 5 min for ail air to be exhausted in the fuel line. With the gas jet in a horizontal position, adjust the length of the flame to 16 mm, measured from the top of the flame to the opening in the gas nozzle. Note 3: rf the precision with which flame spread i

If this is not known, at least five specimens shall be tested Note 4: Where required, a textile suspected of having a flame retardant treatment as evidenced by slow burning, difficulty of i
49、gnition, extinguishment, etc., shall be tested after laundering and dry cleaning in accordance with CANKGSB-4.2 No. 30.3. d Note 5: For a textile having a raised-fibre surface, the long dimension is usually in the direction of hy of the surface fibres. Flame spread is more rapid when progressing against the lay of the pile or nap.
