In IEC695-1-1 i

、t is stated that the following properties are relevant to the full assessment of fire hazard. ignitability; combustion; propagation; opacity, toxicity and corrosiveness of smoke and gaseous products of combustion. IEC technical committee10 has planned to develop standard method of test covering each

、 of the above properties for electrical insulating liquid. This publication contains a standard method for the measurement of linear flame propagation. 1 Scope This standard describes a method for measurement of linear flame propagation along a glass-fibre tape impregnated with the insulating liquid

、 to be tested. This test method is applicable to all insulating liquids, used and unused, with kinematic viscosity lower than or equal to300mm 2 /s at40 C. Insulating liquids of higher viscosity may also be tested but should be heated before impregnation of the glass-fibre tape (see6.2.3, note1). 2

、nts based on this InternationalStandard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. 26、s held in a horizontal position and ignited at one end of the impregnated length under draught-free conditions. The time for the flame to travel between two lines marked on the tape is measured. The burning rate is calculated by dividing the distance between the two lines by the burning time. 4 Test

、 liquid The test liquid shall be kept in a clean vessel between the time of sampling and testing. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Test equipments The equipments consist of the following: Twilled glass-fibre tape as specified in Table 1.EN61197:1994 4 BSI 12-1999 Table 1 Characteristics of tape The twilling ratio is

、2.2. The twill weave is described as follows: Butane gas. One of the two igniters described in sheet2 (under consideration) of IEC695-2-4. Tape support rods made of metal, approximately8mm in diameter and longer than50mm. Stands suitable for holding the tape support rods and tape. A mass of200g 1g.

、A stopwatch measuring to the nearest0,2s. NOTEA suitable tape of this type is “AYA2530”, manufactured by ARISAWA Mfg. Co. Ltd,4-18 Yanagibashi2-Chome, Taito-ku, Tokyo Japan. This material has the advantage that the size has already been removed by heat treatment. This tape can be ordered from the Ja

The mass of the dead weight (top metal bar and

、metal block) shall be1,0kg 0,001kg. The two metal bars shall be10mm in diameter and230mm in length. 5.3 Test enclosure A draught-free enclosure which permits safe ventilation of the combustion products. The temperature of the air in the enclosure at the start of each test shall be23 C 5 C. Class of

Appropriate warni

、ng should be given to operators, and precautions taken in order to avoid any health problems. In particular, all the conditions related to the test enclosure shall be strictly followed. 6.1 Adjustment of testing apparatus Set up the tape support rods and stands in the test enclosure as shown in Figu

、re 1. The two tape support rods should be carefully adjusted with the aid of a spirit level to ensure that when the tape is placed between them it is in a perfectly horizontal position. NOTEIf the tape deviates from the horizontal position, correct test results will not be obtained. 6.2 Preparation

、of test piece 6.2.1 Cut the tape to900mm1000mm in length. 6.2.2 Mark accurately two lines on the tape with ink as shown in Figure 1. The distance between the two lines shall be300mm 3mm. 6.2.3 The tape shall be impregnated with the test liquid and set to the test apparatus, according to the followin

、g procedure: Soak the tape in the test liquid and ensure complete impregnation of the tape. The portion between the right-hand tape support rod and the weight shall not be soaked. Complete impregnation is confirmed by visual observation of no successive release of bubbles. Remove the tape from the l

、iquid. Place the tape between the two bars of the device as shown in Figure 2 and then pull it through by the end to which the weight will be attached. Pull the tape at a speed of30cm/min 5cm/min. In so far as the influence of this speed on the quantity of liquid retained in the tape is not signific

、ant, this procedure can be satisfied by hand operation. NOTE 1When a liquid of viscosity higher than300mm 2 /s but less than5000mm 2 /s at40 C is tested, the liquid should be heated at80 C 10 C; to enhance impregnation. When the tape is impregnated with the hot liquid, it should be cooled to the tes

、t temperature before being ignited. NOTE 2Interlaboratory tests have proved that the quantity of liquid impregnating the tape is not critical. 6.3 Test procedure The test should be carried out in the draught-free enclosure. 6.3.1 Light and adjust the igniter so as to produce a flame according to the

、 requirements of IEC695-2-4. 6.3.2 Apply the tip of the flame to the lower surface of the tape at a location50mm to the right of the right-hand marked line. When the liquid starts burning, remove the igniting flame and then ensure a draught-free environment by closing all ports to prevent air flow.

、6.3.3 Measure the time for the leading edge of the flame to travel between the marked lines using a stopwatch. 6.3.4 At the end of each test ensure safe ventilation of combustion products. 6.4 Number of test specimens Repeat the measurements described in6.2 to6.3 three times for each test liquid. If

、 the liquid does not ignite or if the flame fails to reach the left-hand marked line during the test, repeat the measurements up to five times in an attempt to obtain three sets of data. When three measurements are obtained without extinction of the flame, the three measured values are used for calc

、ulating the burning rate. When the flame records three failures, the test results are expressed as “extinction”. 6.5 Calculation of burning rate Calculate the burning rate using the following equation: Burning rate (mm/s) Distance between two marked lines (mm) Burning times (s) - =EN61197:1994 6 BSI
