、ouple to be used to measure the pinch temperature of quartz glass lamps, three methods of preparation of the lamp and thermocouple, and the measurement to be made. The first two methods require major cutting or drilling of the pinch and connection to the conducting parts of the lamp. The third metho

、d permits the attachment of the thermocouple junction at a precise point on the surface of the pinch either by cement or by mechanical means. Under certain conditions, for example when forced cooling is used in the equipment, it is necessary to make a small hole at this point to sink the junction be

、low the surface of the pinch. The third method can be considered to be more suitable for non-lamp makers. It is recommended that test lamps be prepared by lamp manufacturers to ensure that the thermocouple junction is placed in the correct position. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this standard, t

、he definitions in the relevant IEC lamp publications shall apply. 3 Lamp preparation The lamp shall be prepared by one of the methods specified in Sub-clauses 3.1 and 3.2. Whichever method is adopted, the T-formed edges of the pinch, if present, shall be split to ensure a good thermal connection bet

、ween the pinch and the thermocouple junction. 3.1 Method 1 An incision shall be made in the pinch so that the bottom of the incision coincides with the surface of the pin (see Figure 1, page 5). The incision shall be cut using a diamond wheel having a maximum width of 0.5mm and an outside diameter o

、f about100mm. Because the wheel cuts a curved surface as shown by the line AB, the edges shall be flattened to give an incision as shown by the line AB. The corners shall be rounded to ensure that the thermocouple is in thermal contact with the pin. The incision shall be made abreast of the pin-to-f

、oil weld at the side adjacent to the pin. The slope of the incision, , shall be chosen so that the foil does not appear in the incision. 3.2 Method 2 A hole1mm in diameter shall be made in the pinch opposite the pin-to-foil weld (see Figure 2, page 6) using an ultrasonic drill. The depth of the hole

、 shall be such that the pin is exposed. 3.3 Method 3 The thermocouple junction shall be placed immediately over the lead/foil weld (see Figure 8) against the surface of the pinch and on the same side as the lead connection to the cap/base. NOTEIn some constructions this lead connection may be the ex

、ternal conducting pin of the cap. The foils are normally identical in single filament lamps and either may be measured. In multiple filament lamps, the construction may not be symmetrical and more than one measurement may be needed to determine the critical element. Normally no incision is necessary

、 in the pinch but to improve the accuracy of measurement when forced cooling is used, a small hole is made by drilling to sink the junction below the surface of the pinch. With some lamp constructions, the critical point of the pinch may be covered by the skirt or supporting system of a cap. Where t

、his occurs the relevant area of the pinch shall be exposed by removing the material involved. This method may result in a lower degree of reproducibility compared with methods 1 and 2. If this method requires verification in some applications, methods 1 and 2 are reference methods of measurements. 4

、 Thermocouples 4.1 Type of thermocouple The thermocouples recommended for the temperature measurement are nickel/nickel-chromium, or iron/copper-nickel (Type J). Each wire forming the couple shall have a maximum diameter of2004m. Method 1 The wires should meet at an angle of150, and after the ends h

、ave been welded together, the wires are then brought into an approximate straight line with the weld projecting slightly to one side. Method 2 The thermocouple junction shall be formed by laying the two wires parallel, welding them together with both wires extending in the same direction from the po

、int at which the weld is made. NOTEThe relationship between e.m.f. and temperature can be obtained from IEC Publication: Thermocouple Reference Tables (under consideration) for iron/copper-nickel (Type J) thermocouples.EN60682:1993 4 BSI 05-1999 Method 3 The thermocouple wires shall be of low therma

、l conductivity. The recommended thermocouple is Chromel/Alumel (NiCr/NiAl) type “K” and each wire forming the couple (usually of strip form, or circular in section) shall be fine enough to pass through a0.3mm hole. The junction shall be formed either by twisting and welding the two wires or by melti

、ng them together. All the end portions of the wires liable to be exposed to radiation shall have a high reflectance metal finish. The insulation of each wire shall be of suitable temperature and voltage rating; it shall also be thin but robust. 4.2 Fixing of thermocouples The thermocouple shall be f

、ixed using the method specified in Sub-clause 4.2.1, 4.2.2, or 4.2.3. In order to achieve good thermal contact between the thermocouple junction and the pin, it is preferable to solder or weld the junction to the pin. If this is not possible, the thermocouple junction may be cemented to the pin. Whe

、n cement is used, electrical contact between the thermocouple junction and the pin is taken to indicate sufficient thermal contact between them. Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5, Figure 6, and Figure 7, illustrate the details of examples of using methods 1 and 2 for attaching the thermocouples to lamps

、fitted with various types of caps. Figure 8 illustrates the details of method 3. 4.2.1 For method 1 For lamps that have been prepared according to method 1 (of Sub-clause 3.1), the thermocouple shall be pulled over the pinch, in the incision, so that the junction is in thermal contact with the pin a

、nd the junction soldered or welded to the pin. The entire incision shall then be plugged with cement (see Sub-clause 4.2.4). The use of an anchoring tab for leading the wires from the pinch is recommended (see Sub-clause 4.2.5). 4.2.2 For method 2 For lamps that have been prepared according to metho

、d 2 (of Sub-clause 3.2), the thermocouple junction shall be placed in the hole so that the junction is in contact with the pin and each wire wound once round the pinch. The junction is then soldered or welded to the pin and the hole filled with cement (see Sub-clause 4.2.4). The use of an anchoring

、tab for leading the wires from the pinch is recommended (see Sub-clause 4.2.5). 4.2.3 For method 3 For lamps that have been prepared according to method 3 (Sub-clause 3.3), the thermocouple shall be mechanically held in contact with the pinch face at the required position and a small drop of cement

、(see Sub-clause 4.2.4) dripped on to the junction and allowed to cure. Some additional mechanical anchoring of the thermocouple to the lamp is desirable to prevent stresses breaking the junction. The use of an anchoring tab for leading the wires from the pinch is recommended (see Sub-clause 4.2.5).

、NOTEThe drop of cement is to be as small as practical to avoid errors due to absorbed radiation from the filament or arc. 4.2.4 The cement shall be either a basing cement for halogen lamps, or a mixture of one part of sodium silicate and two parts of talcum powder. 4.2.5 An anchoring tab may conveni

、ently be made using twin-capillary ceramic tube manufactured for use with thermocouples. 5 Temperature measurement The e.m.f. produced by the thermocouple shall be measured by a millivoltmeter having an input resistance about100 times the resistance of the thermocouple or by another suitable measuri

、ng device. NOTEIf, for certain measurements, the UV radiation of the lamp is not suppressed, care should be taken to protect persons in the vicinity. 5.1 Thermal equilibrium shall be attained before a measurement is taken. This is usually achieved within0,5h to1h but may be longer with very high wat

、tage lamps. 6 Result The temperature reading using one of the above methods, with any correction needed to take account of the ambient temperature or the cold junction temperature, shall be recorded as the pinch temperature of the lamp. When method 3 has been used this fact shall be recorded with the measurements.EN60682:1993 BSI 05-1999 5 Figure 1 Lamp preparation diagram Method 1EN60682:1993 6 BSI 05-1999 Figure 2 Lamp preparation diagram Method 2EN60682:1993 BSI 05-1999 7 Figure 3 Attachment of the therm
