It is identical with IEC 68-2-61:1991 Environmental testing Part 2: Test methods Test Z/ABDM: Climatic sequence, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). During the development of IEC68-2-61:1991, efforts were made by the Technical Committee, by way of National Committee comments, to ensure that its content aligned as far as possible with the existing BS2011-2.1Z/ABDM:1983 as this is widely prescribed in existing electrical and electroni

、c component specifications; such as the detail and generic specifications in the BS9000 approval scheme. However, in reaching consensus some differences had to be accepted. With the exception of the two differences detailed below the Technical Committee believe that the changes made in this revision

、 can be overcome by editorial amendment to the relevant specification. The attention of specification writers and users is drawn to the following differences which were considered to be important by a large majority of the participating National Committees. All components are subjected to one cycle

、of test Db, damp heat, cyclic, between the dry heat and the low temperature tests. (In BS2011-2.1Z/ABDM:1983 components in the climatic categories -/-/04 and -/-/10 were not required to be subjected to a damp heat, cyclic test.) Following the low temperature test an interval not exceeding 72h is per

、mitted before proceeding to the next step which is a damp heat, cyclic, test. However, if a low air pressure test is prescribed it should be carried out within that 72h interval. (BS2011-2.1Z/ABDM:1983 allowed an interval not exceeding 72h between the low temperature test and the low air pressure te

、he testing of components, has been witnessed by the inclusion of a “climatic sequence” in IEC68-1 (see clause7 with guidance inAnnex B). With the increasing importance of the IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components (IECQ) it has become necessary to define the test sequence more preci

、sely than could be done in clause7 of IEC68-1 with the object of providing for satisfactory reproducibility of the test. This International Standard describes in detail a composite test specifying a “climatic sequence” for specimens of products, primarily components, that is based on clause7 of IEC6

、8-1, and it includes guidance in informative annexes for specification writers and those performing the test. NOTETest Z/ABDM is a “composite test” as defined in IEC 68-1 rather than a “sequence” as defined in the same standard. Because of the well-established use of “sequence” in references to clau

、se7 of IEC68-1 it has been decided that “sequence” should continue to be used in referring to the operations in this composite test. 1 Object This International Standard provides standard composite test methods for determining the suitability of a specimen when subjected to environmental conditions

、consisting of a sequence of temperature, humidity and, where required, low air pressure environmental stresses. The order of application of the stresses and conditions for the change from one step to the next have been chosen to accelerate and amplify degradation mechanisms of the same type as those

、 observed under natural climatic conditions. NOTEEnvironmental conditions occurring in nature are classified in IEC721-2 and IEC721-3. This standard may be applied to other electrotechnical products when the degradation mechanisms are the same and the specified requirements for testing can be satisf

、ied. In other cases, it may form a basis for the writing of a similar test. In this test, specimens are exposed to environmental tests in a standard order and categorized according to the basic code defined in Appendix A of IEC68-1 except that the third group of digits is used as an indication of th

、e number of cycles in Step5 of the damp heat cyclic Test Db according to clause6 in IEC68-2-30. In the climatic categories -/-/56, 40/-/-, etc., in this standard the dashes may be replaced by any of the standard values appropriate to the space as in the following examples:55/100/56, 25/085/56, 40/08

、5/21. Where any modification is necessary, the relevant specification shall provide the necessary information for each step in the selected method (seeclause8). This test is frequently specified to follow other tests involving mechanical stress, for example tests for robustness of terminations, sold

、erability, shock and vibration, as a means of determining whether the sealing of the specimen has been damaged. 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. Part 3: Classification of groups of environmental parameters and their severities. 3 Definitions The terms used are generally defined in IEC68-5-2. 4 Test apparatus The test apparatus is that required for carrying out each of the individual tests, including variants and methods, with the requi

、red severities prescribed for the sequence. When using a single test chamber in which the conditions specified for the different steps in the sequence are successively established, special care is necessary (see clauseB.3 ofAnnex B). The use of a test chamber with automatic transfer of the specimen

、between compartments can, in general, be regarded as equivalent to the use of separate test chambers. Also, with test chambers with automatic transfer, it should be ensured that the recovery conditions at the end of each step are satisfied, particularly for step 2 of method 1 (see8.2.2). 5 Severitie

、s The severity is defined by the temperature of the dry heat test (4.1 of IEC68-2-2), the temperature of the cold test (4.1 of IEC68-2-1), the air pressure and the duration of exposure, if the optional “low air pressure” step is required (clause4 in IEC68-2-13), and finally, the number of damp heat

、cycles according to8.2.5 of this standard. 6 Pre-conditioning Unless otherwise prescribed by the relevant specification, pre-conditioning is required. The duration of preconditioning shall be at least 1h under standard atmospheric conditions for testing. 7 Initial measurements The specimen shall be

、submitted to the visual, dimensional and functional checks prescribed by the relevant specification. 8 Testing 8.1 General description Three methods are standardized. Method1 is preferred and shall always be used unless otherwise prescribed by the relevant specification. In method1 the specimen is f

、irst exposed to a high temperature and then to a cycle of damp heat. The damp heat cycle is immediately followed by a low temperature test so that any moisture which has entered either the specimen or surface cracks in its seals will be frozen and cause further damage. Low air pressure (optional) is

、 then followed by further exposure to cyclic damp heat conditions (except for climatic categories-/-/04 and-/-/10) to complete the check on the sealing of the specimen. Method2 defines a more severe test which interposes a low temperature test between each of the five final damp heat cycles (climati

、c category-/-/56 only). Method3 is intended to provide a short climatic sequence for lot by lot acceptance testing, applicable, where prescribed by the relevant specification, to electronic components of assessed quality. When recovery is specified, it shall, unless otherwise prescribed by the relevant specification, be under the standard atmospheric conditions for testing. 8.2 Method 1 This method contains five steps (seeFigure 1) of which one (step4 in8.2.4) is optional. 8.2.1 Step 1: Dry heat a) The specimen shall be exposed to
