Themethodissimpleandstraightforward.Acraterisgroundintothecoatedpartbymeansofarotatingballwettedby anabrasiveslurry.Thethicknessofthecoatingisderivedfromtheballandcraterdimensionalcharacteristics. Contrastbetweenthedifferentmaterialsconstitutingthecoatingandsub

    27、strateisaprerequisiteforthemethodto enablethedetectionoftheinterfacebetweenthecoatingandthesurface. NOTE Testspecimensshouldbeeitherflatorcylindrical.Flatnesscanbeconsideredassufficientifthelocalspecimen radiusofcurvature,R s,satisfiestherelationR s100R(forerror 1%). 4Sampling Arepresentativetestspe

    30、erivedfromthesizeofthewearscars(fullcraterandsubstratecrater widths)andtheballdiameter. NOTE1 Differentsetupsoftestrigscanbeused.Theballcanberotatedfreelyonadriveshaft,wherebyitsmassisused toproducethecontactload,oritcanbeclampedinthedriveaxiswhilethespecimenisloadedbymeansofaleversystem. Alternativ

    31、ely,awheelinsteadofaballcanbeused,inwhichcasethesamplemustalsoberotated(thisisthesameprinciple as dimplegrinderusedforthepreparationofTEMspecimens).AtypicalarrangementisshowninFigure1.     33、mple, 1mdiamondpastesuspendedinethanolisoftenused. 5.2 Preparationofthetest Makesurethatthespecimenandballareclean.Ultrasoniccleaningfor5mininfreshpetroleumetherfollowedby dryinginambientairisusuallysufficient.Thesuitabilityoftheballshallbedeterminedbymeasuring10diametersat random.Aballshallbereject

    34、edifthedifferencebetweenanytwomeasurementsexceeds5m(themaximum allowablevalueofV DWS forgradeG200ballsasgiveninISO3290(E),orifscratchesvisibletothenakedeyeare presentonthesurface.Prepareasuspensionofabrasiveparticlesinadilutingagent.Positionthetestpieceona stablesupport. NOTE1 Theabrasivesuspensions

    35、houldbewellstirredtoensureauniformdispersionofabrasiveparticles. NOTE2 Hardenedsteelballsforrollingbearingscanbeusedwithaspecifieddiameterandsurfacefinishaccordingto ISO3290(E). 5.3 Testparameters Thetestspecificparametersinclude: a)ball diameter; b) contactload; c)sliding speed; d) compositionandco

    39、cf.clause5.2). Animagingtechniquewithcalibratedsizemeasurementshallbeused.Examinethegroundcavityatthehighest magnificationatwhichthecompleteworncraterisvisible. Focusthemicroscopeontheconcentricpatternsandifnecessaryadjusttheilluminationtoobtainmaximum contrast. NOTE Usually,anoptical,reflectedlight

    40、microscopeisused,butanyotherimagingtechniquesuchasscanningelectron microscopycanbeused,e.g.whenitisnotpossibletodiscriminatebetweenthecoatingandthesubstratebyothermeans.In thecaseofopticalmicroscopy,etchingcanbeusedtoenhancecontrastbetweenthesubstrateandcoating. 6.2Measurement Measurethecraterdimens

    41、ionsasappropriateusingacalibratedmeasuringdevice. ForflatspecimensmeasurethediametersD,d,orlengthsX,Y,ofthecircularcharacteristicsbothparalleland perpendiculartothedirectionofballrotation(Figure2). Forcylindricalspecimensmeasureonlythelargestdimensionsofthecircularcharacteristics,parallelwiththecyli

    42、nder axis(Figure3). Atleast5measurementsshallbecarriedouttodefinetherepeatabilityofthemeasurement. NOTE1 Sizemeasurementcaneasilybeachievedbypreparingamicrographofthecavityaswellasofatraceably calibratedscaleatthesamemagnification.
