    7、h load 3ii BSI 10-2000 BS AU 187:2000 Foreword This British Standard has been prepared, under the direction of the Automobile Standards Committee, at the request of the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders. It supersedes BS AU 187 : 1983, which is withdrawn. The purpose of this standard is to

    8、 establish the minimum requirements for tow rope assemblies (i.e. the ropes and the fittings, if any) which may be used for towing passenger cars and light vans in an emergency (e.g. after a breakdown). The strength of the assembly is specified by a requirement for resistance to a snatch load to ens

    9、ure that the assembly will survive specified take-up shocks. The materials to be used are not specified as it is considered that these should be left to the discretion of the manufacturer, but requirements relating to the shape and size are included to take account of ISO 5422, Road vehicles Anchora

    10、ges for towing ropes, cables or bars, prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles, of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO). A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their

    12、tes when the document was last issued.BS AU 187:2000 BSI 10-2000 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements, including those for certain dimensions, performance and packaging for flexible tow rope assemblies for towing motor vehicles having a maximum gross mass of 2 tonnes. 2 Definitions

    13、 For the purpose of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 2.1 tow rope assembly the complete article used for towing motor vehicles, consisting of a rope and fittings, if any 2.2 fittings components of metal, plastics or other suitable material, incorporated in the tow rope assembly

    14、 2.3 rope the rope, cord, webbing, strap or other similar flexible material used in the tow rope assembly 3 Length The overall length of the tow rope assembly, from attachment point to attachment point shall be not less than 3.5 m nor more than 4.5 m. The measurement shall be made with the assembly

    15、under a tension of 1 00020, +20 Newtons and made up in accordance with the manufacturers instructions or, where this information is not given, with a loop of length 300 mm formed at each end. 4 Shape and size The shape and size of the fittings and rope shall be such that it shall be possible to atta

    16、ch each end of the tow rope assembly to a fitting having a hole 30 +0,20.25 mm in diameter. NOTE The shape and size of the fittings and rope are left to the discretion of the manufacturer. 5 Material Tow ropes shall be made from materials that are resistant to moisture and hydrocarbons and be suitab

    17、le for use at temperatures ranging from2208C to +508C. 6 Finish 6.1 All materials shall be free from any burrs or flashing that could cause wound or abrasion. 6.2 The ends of the rope shall be treated or otherwise protected to prevent fraying. 7 Resistance to snatch load The tow rope assembly shall

    18、be tested for resistance to snatch load in accordance with annex A. After the test the tow rope assembly shall conform to the following requirements: a) the assembly shall be capable of supporting the 100 kg mass; b) with the tension released from the assembly it shall be possible to disconnect the

    19、assembly from the points of attachment without the use of tools or other implements; c) the surfaces of the assembly shall conform to the requirements of 6.2 BSI 10-2000 BS AU 187:2000 1) Marking BS AU 187 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a cl

    20、aim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the claimants responsibility. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third-party certification of conformity. 8 Warning device Tow ropes shall be made such that

    21、 they are clearly visible to any person using the road. The method of ensuring this visibility shall be permanent and comprise one or more of the following: a) a coloured and conspicuous flag or similar warning device attached at the middle of the length of the tow rope assembly. The device shall ha

    22、ve a minimum area of 300 sq cm. viewed from the side; or b) brightly coloured rope; or c) fixed coloured and conspicuous markers along the length of the rope having a minimum total projected area of 300 sq cm viewed from the side. 9 Packaging The tow rope assembly shall be in a package suitable for

    23、storing the assembly. The packaging shall incorporate the following: a) instruction on the method of attachment to vehicles; b) mass of vehicle which may be towed; c) recommendations on the care and maintenance of the assembly and the dangers of using frayed or damaged tow ropes/attachments; d) advi

    24、ce on the principles of towing; e) a statement drawing attention to local legislation on towing. e.g. use of an “on tow” sign. 10 Marking Each tow rope assembly purporting to conform to the requirements of this British Standard shall be permanently and legibly marked with the following information:

    25、a) a registered trade name, trade mark or other means of identification of the manufacturer; b) number and date of this British Standard, i.e. BS AU 187:2000 1) .BS AU 187:2000 BSI 10-2000 3 Annex A Method of test for resistance to snatch load A.1 Apparatus A.1.1 A support structure of such rigidity

    26、 that the dynamic load applied to the tow rope is not reduced. A.1.2 A test mass 100 1.0 kg to the top of which is fixed an 8 mm diameter steel bar formed into a loop of internal diameter 30,20.00, +0.25 mm. A.1.3 A steel bar, with a loop as described in A.1.2, rigidly supported at a height such, wi

    27、th the mass suspended from it on the rope, there is 1 m clearance under the mass. The fitting should be raised if the mass makes contact with the ground during test. A.2 Procedure A.2.1 Attach one end of the tow rope assembly to the bar (see A.1.3) in accordance with the manufacturers instructions o

    28、r, where this information is not given, with a loop of length 300 mm formed at the end. Mark the engagement point of the fitting on the rope. A.2.2 Attach the free end of the assembly to the test mass as described in A.2.1 and mark the engagement point of the fitting on the rope. A.2.3 Allow the tes

    29、t mass to hang freely. A.2.4 Raise the test mass 1 m and allow it to fall freely. A.2.5 Check against the marks on the rope, the engagement points of the fittings at each end, and adjust the assembly as necessary. A.2.6 Repeat procedure in A.2.3 to A.2.5 nine times (i.e. a total of 10 drops). A.2.7
