This method was included in the 1974

6、edition of BSHandbook No.11 “Methods of test for textiles” as a recommended method. However, due to the wide usage of this method it had been decided that it be revised and published as a British Standard. The major change from the method in Handbook No. 11 is that the test specimens are dried to co

7、nstant mass before testing rather than being conditioned. At the time of publication of this British Standard, no corresponding International Standard exists. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for the

Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages1 and 2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (se

This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS6645:1985 BSI 02-2000 1 1 Scope This British Standard describes a method for determination of the alkali solubility of flax materials. NOTEThe titles of the publicati

10、ons referred to in this British Standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Principle The alkali solubility is a measure of the non-cellulosic constituents (readily available as foodstuffs for micro-organisms) left in commercially boiled flax materials. It is determined by further boiling the ma

11、terial in a relatively strong solution of sodium carbonate. The percentage loss in mass during this process less the percentage loss in mass on boiling in water alone, is the alkali solubility of the material. 3 Apparatus and reagents 3.1 Conical flasks, 500 mL with reflux condensers. 3.2 Large Buch

12、ner funnel, approximately 150 mm in diameter. 3.3 Filter paper 3.4 Oven, capable of maintaining a temperature of105 3 C. 3.5 Balance, having an accuracy of 0.1 mg. 3.6 Sodium carbonate, 50 g/L solution of analytical reagent quality. 3.7 Distilled water, complying with BS 3978. 3.8 Sintered glass cru

13、cibles, complying with grade P160 of BS 1752. 3.9 Weighing bottle 4 Procedure Prepare two specimens each of about 3g. Dry the specimens in the oven (3.4) at105 3 C until constant mass is achieved. Record the dry mass of the specimens. In a 500 mL conical flask fitted with a reflux condenser (3.1), b

Filter the liquid through a hardened filter paper (3.3) on the Buchner funnel(3.2). Wash the specimen four tim

15、es by decanting with200mL of distilled water at about70 C, and pass the washings through the filter. Transfer the specimen to the sintered glass crucible(3.8), wash it three times with200mL of distilled water at about70 C and dry it in an oven at105 3 C for1h. Then transfer the specimen to the weigh

16、ing bottle (3.9) and dry it to constant mass at105 3 C. NOTEThe mass is considered to be constant when successive weighings show no mass change greater than0.05%. Add the second specimen to250mL of boiling distilled water and gently boil for2.5h. Then conduct the washing and filtering and determinat

17、ion of mass as prescribed for the first specimen. 5 Calculation and expression of results Calculate the percentage losses in mass, referred to the oven-dry mass, produced by boiling with the sodium carbonate solution and with the distilled water. The difference between these two losses is the alkali

18、 solubility expressed as a percentage by mass. 6 Test report The test report shall include the following: a) the number and date of this British Standard; b) the description of the sample tested; c) the test result (see clause 5); d) the details of any deviation from the test procedure.2 blankBS6645
