、 but meets the other requirements in this standard. 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for continuously hot-dip lead alloy (terne) coated cold reduced low carbon steel flat products in drawing and forming grades. This standard applies to flat products from over 0.4 mm up to and inc

、luding 2.0 mm thick and widths up to 1 350 mm, in strip and sheet. It applies to products with terne coatings having a nominal mass of 120 g/m 2 and to commercial grade terne coating (CGT) having no specified coating mass but meeting the other requirements of this standard. NOTE The products in this

、 standard can be used for applications where suitability for soldering and cold forming are required and corrosion resistance is a principal factor. The coating mass specified and the thickness of the base material should be compatible with the desired service life and forming requirements. 2 Normat

、ows: 1) BS 6582 wide strip DX53D+T.120U. 2) BS 6582 sheet DX53D+T.120U. Suitable for making the part. 5 Information to be supplied by the purchaser 5.1 General The following information shall be given in the enquiry and order to assist the manufacturer in supplying the correct grade of material: a)

、the complete designation as specified in clause 4; b) the dimensions required (the product thickness is the thickness of the base material without the coating); c) the quality required and handling requirements.2 BSI 06-2000 BS 6582:2000 2) Where the purchaser specifies a particular grade of materia

、l, without invoking this clause, he assumes responsibility that the grade will be satisfactory. 5.2 Options In the event that the purchaser does not indicate his wish to implement any of the general requirements included in clause 6 and specify his requirements at the time of the enquiry and order,

、the manufacturer shall supply the product on the following basis: a) that a corrosion resistance test is not required (see 6.3); b) that the product will be supplied as coated (see 6.2); c) that the product will be supplied branded (see 6.4); d) that no acceptance testing is required (see 6.5). NOTE

、 1 A drawing of the part is desirable. NOTE 2 Lead alloy coated flat products conforming to this standard are suitable for welding, brazing and soldering using appropriate methods and conditions. 6 General requirements 6.1 Suitability for making the part NOTE 1 Formability requirements vary widely a

、nd it is advisable to seek advice from the supplier when considering purchasing material as suitable for a particular application and/or purpose see clause 4f) 2) The coated flat rolled products shall be supplied either: a) with a specified grade of steel base see clause 4d); or b) suitable for maki

、ng the part see 5.1a). NOTE 2 Reference should be made to annex B for a contractual clause regarding allowable processing scrap. When, following an enquiry, the supplier undertakes to supply steel which is suitable for forming into a particular part, the purchaser, when ordering the steel, shall add

、 the words “Suitable for making the part” after the coating designation. In such cases, the steel supplied shall still be deemed to conform to this standard if there are minor variations from the chemical composition and/or tensile properties specified for that steel. 6.2 Surface protection Terne co

、ated flat rolled products shall be supplied with one of the following surface treatments: a) U As coated; NOTE 1 The manufacturing process gives a roughened surface to the coating and will leave oil residues on the surface. b) O With additional lubrication; c) B Brushed; NOTE 2 Brushing removes tin/

、lead oxides produced during the manufacturing process and enhances subsequent passivation or painting operations. d) BC Brushed and chemically treated. 6.3 Corrosion resistance NOTE 1 Although corrosion resistance is an important characteristic of products conforming to this standard, no requirement

、s are specified. Coated flat rolled products shall be supplied either: a) with no specified requirements for corrosion resistance testing; or b) with specified requirements for corrosion resistance testing. NOTE 2 Where requirements are specified for corrosion resistance, details of sampling and spe

、cimen preparation, the test method and interpretation of the results should be stated in that order. 6.4 Branding The products shall be supplied either: a) branded with the manufacturers identity number only and labelled in accordance with 7.8;or b) labelled according to 7.8 only. 6.5 Acceptance tes

、ting Coated flat rolled products shall be supplied either: a) with no acceptance testing; or b) with specified acceptance testing in accordance with 7.5 and 7.6. 7 Specific requirements 7.1 Manufacturing processes Coating line welds shall not be included. NOTE The processes used in steel making and

、in the manufacture of the product are at the discretion of the manufacturer. 7.2 Properties of the steel base The initial product for terne coating shall be rolled steel strip conforming to BS EN 10130. When sampled and tested in accordance with 7.4.2.1 and 7.5.2, the tensile properties of the steel

、 base shall be in accordance with Table 1, unless the product is ordered “Suitable for making the part” (see 6.1). NOTE 1 It should be noted that the mechanical properties of the steel base may be altered by the coating process. Due to the problems of ageing, the tensile properties shall be valid fo
