    13、esign, dimensions, materials and construction requirements for medicine trolleys suitable for use in hospitals. Appendix B lists information that should be supplied when making enquiries or placing orders. 2 References The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the ins

    14、ide back cover. 3 Dimensions 3.1 Overall dimensions of the trolley. The width of the trolley shall not exceed 950 mm including buffering. The depth shall not exceed 550 mm including buffering. The maximum overall height from the floor to the top of the trolley shall not exceed 1250 mm when the cabin

    15、et is open. 3.2 Overall dimensions of the cabinet. The width of the cabinet shall not exceed 750 mm. The depth (front to back) shall not exceed 450 mm. 4 General requirements 4.1 The cabinet shall contain sufficient space for the storage of large bottles up to 240 mm high and small bottles or other

    16、containers of medicaments and preparations required for typical daily use. As illustrated in Figure 1(a), a loose shelf unit of moulded plastics construction, or similar type, may be provided to accommodate small bottles or containers. The shelves shall be designed to allow the labels of the bottles

    17、 and containers to be easily seen and to prevent undue movement of the bottles. The bottles shall be easily removable from the shelves. Alternatively, instead of the loose shelf unit, there may be an individual drawer unit so designed that the contents of each drawer are clearly visible, or the fron

    18、t of the drawer may be labelled with the contents. 4.2 Sufficient area of working surfaces shall be provided for the dispensing of medicines, carriage of prescription sheets and other documents, and for writing. If an additional flap or pull-out shelf is supplied, it shall have minimum dimensions of

    19、380mm 495 mm. 4.3 For security reasons the cabinet shall be capable of being closed quickly and securely and it shall comply with the requirements specified in clause 8. 4.4 Means of propelling and guiding the trolley when the cabinet is open shall be provided, e.g. a bar or handles. 4.5 There shall

    20、 be no crevices that may harbour dirt or foreign matter. 4.6 When not in use, it shall be possible to immobilize the trolley by securing it to the fabric of the building with a docking device as illustrated in Figure 1(b), from which the trolley cannot be released, by means of a suitable locking dev

    21、ice, when the cabinet is locked. The complete docking mechanism shall be supplied with the trolley. 4.7 The cabinet shall be secured to the framework of the trolley, and no fixing shall be accessible when the cabinet is locked. 4.8 The trolley shall be fitted with a lower shelf external to the locka

    22、ble cabinet. 5 Materials 5.1 General. Materials shall comply with the requirements of the relevant British Standard specifications given in 5.1.1 to 5.1.7. 5.1.1 Steel sheet shall comply with the requirements of BS 1449-1, and shall be of thickness not less than 0.9 mm (20 gauge). 5.1.2 Stainless st

    23、eel sheet shall comply with the requirements of BS 1449-2, and shall be of thickness not less than 0.8 mm (22 gauge). 5.1.3 Aluminium alloy sheet shall comply with the requirements of BS 1470, and shall be of thickness not less than 1.2 mm (18 gauge). 5.1.4 Blockboard and laminboard shall comply wit

    24、h the requirements of BS 3444 for grade 2-2 interior bonded 3-ply construction. 5.1.5 Chipboard shall comply with the requirements of BS 2604, and shall have a minimum density of600 kg/m 3 , a modulus of elasticity of 2070 MN/m 2and a screw holding of 620 N. 5.1.6 Plywood shall comply with the requi

    25、rements of BS 1455, and shall be of a grade not lower than3MR. 5.1.7 Laminated plastics sheet shall comply with the requirements of BS 3794:1973 for class 1 material, except that sheet used on vertical surfaces may be of a minimum nominal thickness of 0.75 mm and such sheet need not comply with the

    26、requirements of clauses 4, 8, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 19 of that standard. 5.2 Framework. The main members, if of steel tube, shall comply with the requirements of BS1775, and shall be of a minimum overall diameter of 25 mm and 1.6 mm minimum wall thickness. Other materials and sections shall give at lea

    27、st equivalent strength to steel tube complying with the requirements of BS 1775.BS5853:1980 2 BSI 12-1999 If the main members are manufactured from stainless steel tube, they shall comply with the requirements of BS 3014 for grade 1. 5.3 Cabinet. The cabinet shall be manufactured of materials specif

    28、ied in 5.1. 6 Construction 6.1 General 6.1.1 There shall be no sharp projections or edges that would be a hazard to the user. 6.1.2 The panels of materials specified in 5.1.4, 5.1.5, 5.1.6 and 5.1.7 shall be of balanced construction with the exposed edges of the manufactured board lipped or permanen

    29、tly sealed. 6.2 Hinges. The hinges for the lockable cabinet shall be of the piano type. 6.3 Welding. Welding shall be in accordance with the appropriate British Standards as follows: a) for steel, BS 693 and BS 5135; b) for stainless steel, BS 3019-2; c) for aluminium alloys, BS 3019-1. 7 Castors Th

    30、e trolley shall be fitted with four castors complying with the requirements of BS 2099-1. They shall be not less than 100 mm nominal diameter. 8 Security The cabinet shall be lockable. The lock shall be of the slam type with not less than five levers, and the bolt shall engage by at least 6 mm into

    31、a rigid section of the cabinet carcass. When closed, the lock mechanism and its fixings shall not be accessible from outside the cabinet. The cabinet top and sides shall be so constructed that they are lever resistant. See Figure 1(a), which illustrates a suitable method. See also 4.3 and 4.6. 9 Buf

    32、fering The trolley shall be fitted with buffering to prevent damage to the fabric of the building. The buffering shall comply with the requirements of BS 4322 and shall give complete protection when the cabinet is closed and any flaps or pull-out shelves are stowed. Any brackets, rails or supports,

    33、as mentioned in Appendix B, paragraphs b), c) and d), shall be stowable within the compass of the buffering area. 10 Finish 10.1 Steel. Steel shall be finished with either stoving enamel or plastics coating which shall be applied strictly in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. The finish

    34、 shall present a smooth surface, shall be non-toxic and shall comply with the requirements listed in Appendix A. 10.2 Stainless steel. The finish of stainless steel shall comply with the requirements for finish No. 8 of Table 1 of BS 1449-2:1975. 10.3 Aluminium alloy. Aluminium alloy shall be either

    35、 anodized in accordance with grade AA25 of BS 1615 or shall be finished with either stove enamel or plastics coating which shall be applied strictly in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. The finish shall present a smooth surface, shall be non-toxic and shall comply with the requirements

    36、 listed in Appendix A. 10.4 Wood. Wood finish shall comply with the requirements of BS 3962-2, BS 3962-3 and BS3962-6 as follows: a) resistance to wet heat: rating 4 at 70 C (Part 2); b) resistance to dry heat: rating 4 at 140 C (Part 3); c) resistance to mechanical damage: rating 4 for impact, scra

    37、tch and cross cut tests (Part 6). 11 Marking Medicine trolleys complying with the requirements of this British Standard shall be marked on the underside of the lower shelf with the following information: a) the manufacturers name or trade mark; b) the number of this British Standard, i.e.BS5853; NOT

    38、EMarking BS 5853 on or in relation to a product is a claim by the manufacturer that the product has been manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of such a claim is therefore the manufacturers sole responsibility. Enquiries as to the availability of third party

    39、certification to support such claims should be addressed to the Director, British Standards Institution, Maylands Avenue, Hemel Hempstead, Herts HP24SQ in the case of certification marks administered by BSI or to the appropriate authority for other certification marks. c) the month and year of manuf
