It supersedes BS 4965:1991, which is withdrawn. The most significant change in this revision is to t

、he nomenclature used to describe the various board and panel categories. Some substrates have also been regraded. With these changes, the suitability of the product to meet the demands of various environments, the resistance expected of the laminate surface to wear and tear, and the fire rating of t

、he board or panel, if applicable, should now be recognizable in a wide European context. Items which may be considered for agreement between purchaser and supplier are given in annex A. Examples of usage of symbols and some suggested applications of the three durability clauses are given in annex E.

、 Annex A and annex E are informative. Annexes B, C and D are normative. Assessed capability. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of quality system assessment and registration against the appropriate standard in the BS EN ISO 9000 series by an accredited third-part

、y certification body. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages Th

、ity of the board or panel shall be classified in accordance with BS EN 204. NOTE The durability of the board or panel is determined by both the nature of the substrate and the type of adhesive used to bond the facing laminates to it.2 BSI 09-1999 BS 4965:1999 Table 1 Categories of surface laminates

、and typical applications Classification Laminate specification Performance category Typical applications HD (Heavy duty) BS EN 438-1 (HD) Decorative laminates with greater resistance to abrasion than HG Flooring and supermarket checkout counters HG (Horizontal grade) BS EN 438-1 (HG), BS 7332 (G) De

、term exposure to running or condensed water and/or to occasional high humidity; D3 frequent short-term exposure to running or condensed water and/or long-term exposure to high humidity; D4 frequent prolonged exposure to running or condensed water. NOTE Only durability classes D2, D3 and D4 of BS EN

、204 have been cited in this standard. Class D1 is considered to be of too low a performance level for inclusion in this standard. 4.3 Surface laminate The category of surface laminate shall be determined by its performance when tested in accordance with BS EN 438-2. These categories shall be as give

、n in Table 1, which also provides examples of typical applications. 4.4 Fire rating Fire-rated boards and panels shall be classified as follows: F1 where the composite meets the surface spread of flame requirements of class 1 in accordance with BS 476-7; F0 where the composite meets class 0 requirem

、ents of appendix A12b of the Building Regulations 1991 1. Because of the hygroscopic nature of fire-retardant additives used in the manufacture of flame-retardant laminates, the edges of flame-retardant panels used in wet applications shall be sealed to prevent moisture ingress. 5 Material requireme

、nts 5.1 Substrates The selection of core materials suitable for use in each durability class shall be in accordance with Table 2. 5.2 Surface laminates 5.2.1 Decorative laminate sheets These shall be manufactured in accordance with BS EN 438-1 or BS 7332 and shall conform to the performance requirem

、ents for their grade and type set out in these standards. NOTE The board or panel manufacturer should seek assurance from the laminate manufacturer that any flame-retardant grade of laminate is suitable for the application in the intended durability class. 5.2.2 Backing sheets All boards and panels

、shall be veneered on their reverse side. The backing sheet for D3 and D4 boards and panels shall conform to the appropriate performance requirements of BS EN 438-1 or BS 7332. NOTE 1 Other backing materials may be used on D2 boards and panels providing the composite meets the relevant requirements f

、or durability, flatness (see 7.4) and fire performance (see clause 9). NOTE 2 For F1 and F0 fire-rated boards and panels the purchaser may require the backing sheet to possess similar flame-retardant properties to those of the face laminates. 5.3 Adhesives The adhesive types shown in Table 3 shall b

、e regarded as providing the bond of laminate to substrate to the classification shown. NOTE 1 The precise performance of adhesives used should be confirmed with the manufacturers. NOTE 2 Polychloroprene contact adhesives are not classified in BS EN 204 but because of their long trouble-free history

、when properly applied by spray methods in heated factory environments followed by mechanical nip rolling pressure, they may be classed as D2 when so applied. Because of the elastomeric nature of this type of adhesive, panel widths in excess of 600 mm should be avoided. All bonds in all classes shall

、 conform to clause 8. NOTE 2 The manufacturers endorsement that their product is suitable for bonding high-pressure laminates should be sought, together with any special recommendations to follow or precautions to be observed. 6 Appea

、rance The surface of the laminate, before fabrication, shall conform to BS EN 438-1:1991, 6.4. Only slight show-through shall be permitted on the surface of the board or panel when inspected in accordance with annex B. For high-gloss or satin finishes moderate show-through is permitted on the surfac
