Aluminium and aluminium alloy materials intended for general engineering use are the subject of specification in BS 1470BS 1475 whilst those intended for specialized use or which are of limited interest, are published in the supplementary engineering series. The latter series will be kept un

As a major step towards alignment of aluminium and aluminium alloy compositions on an internatio

This system is administered by the Aluminium Association Inc., who issue the “Registration Record of International Alloy Designations and Chemical Composition Limits for Wrou

By amendment, it has been decided to introduce this system into the British Standards concerned with these types of material in place of the material designations formerly used. The details of the system are given inAppendix A. The temper designations and associated mechanical

、9 1 Scope This British Standard relates to aluminium alloy drawn tube. 1 General requirements 1.1 General The drawn tube shall comply with the general requirements set out in the following clauses and with the appropriate requirements specified in Section 2. 1.2 Definitions For the purposes of this

、British Standard, the following definitions apply: purchaser the party, whether user, retailer, wholesaler, or corporate body, or their agent(s) as appropriate, responsible for ordering the material standardized drawn tube 1) a hollow product of uniform wall thickness, produced by cold drawing from

、tube bloom 1.3 Freedom from defects The material shall be free from defects prejudicial to its use. 1.4 Chemical composition The chemical composition shall comply with the requirements specified in2.1. 1.5 Condition The material shall be supplied in one of the following conditions as specified by th

、e purchaser and cited in2.2. 1.6 Sizes and tolerances The tubes shall be of the dimensions shown inTable 1 andTable 2 and the tolerances shall comply with the following tables as appropriate: Table 1 Tolerances on outside or inside diameter. Table 2 Tolerances on wall thickness. Table 3 Tolerances o

、n cutting to length. Table 4 Tolerances on straightness. Table 5 Tolerances on shaped tube. 1.7 Selection of test samples The tubes of the same dimensions, produced in the same way and of the same composition, shall be grouped in batches. The supplier shall sample each batch at such a rate that he c

、an, on the results of the mechanical tests on the samples, certify that the material conforms to this specification. Before the test samples are cut off, they shall be marked to identify them with the batch they represent. The test samples shall be taken from the tubes as supplied and shall not be a

、nnealed or mechanically worked (except for machining the test piece) before being tested. 1) Extracted from BS 3660 “Glossary of terms used in the wrought aluminium industry”. O Annealed. Material which is fully annealed to obtain the lowest strength condition. H2 H4 Strain hardened. Material subjec

、ted to the application of cold work after annealing (or hot forming) or to a combination of cold work and partial annealing/stabilizing in order to secure the specified mechanical properties. The designations are in ascending order of tensile strength. BS4300-10:1969 2 BSI 11-1999 1.8 Mechanical tes

、ts The following tests shall be made on test pieces prepared from test samples selected as specified in1.4. 1.8.1 Tensile test. The tensile test shall be made in accordance with BS 18-1 2) . The elongation shall be measured on a gauge length of5.65S oexcept in the case of tubes thicker than3mm where

、 the elongation shall be measured on a50mm gauge length. 1.8.2 0.2% proof stress. The proof stress shall be determined as specified in BS 18-1 2) . 1.8.3 Flattening test. A test piece not less than 50 mm long, cut from each selected tube shall be flattened until the interior surfaces of the tube mee

、t. 1.9 Retests Should any of the test pieces first selected fail to pass the mechanical tests, two further samples from the same batch shall be selected for testing, one of which shall be from the tube from which the original test sample was taken, unless that tube has been withdrawn by the supplier

、. Should the test pieces from both these additional samples pass, the batch represented by the test samples shall be deemed to comply with this standard. Should the test pieces from either of these additional samples fail, the batch represented by the test samples shall be deemed not to comply with

、this standard. 1.10 Certificate of compliance The supplier shall certify that the material complies with the requirements of this standard. 1.11 Inspection If the purchaser wishes to inspect the material at the suppliers works he shall notify the supplier at the time of placing the order. 1.12 Indep

、endent test Should there be a dispute about the compliance of the material with regard to the composition or the test requirements of this standard, the purchaser and the supplier shall have the right to have tests made by a mutually acceptable testing authority. The results obtained by the independ

、ent testing authority shall be accepted as final. If the material does not comply with this standard, the cost of independent testing shall be borne by the supplier; if the material complies with this standard the cost shall be borne by the purchaser. The method of sampling for analysis shall be in

、accordance with BS 1499 3) , and the methods of analysis shall be in accordance with BS 1728 4) , where the appropriate method exists. 1.13 Facilities for testing The supplier shall make the necessary arrangements for carrying out the tests required by this standard. 1.14 The rounding of numbers rul

、e For purposes of determining conformance to compositional limits and mechanical properties (not dimensional tolerances), an observed value or a calculated value obtained from analysis is rounded off to the nearest unit in the last right-hand place of figures used in expressing the specified limit,
