、rds Committee and supersedes BS3591:1963, which is withdrawn. It comprises a specification for industrial methylated spirits to meet the requirements of Government departments and industrial users for material of general commercial quality. It does not, however, apply to material intended for medici

、nal use, which is included in the British Pharmacopoeia. First published in1963, the standard has been revised primarily to take account of metrication. In particular, the strength of the material is now expressed as a percentage by volume instead of in degrees over proof (O.P.). In addition, change

、s in legislation relating to alcohol and industrial methylated spirits have been taken into consideration. Furthermore it differs from the previous edition in that the test methods associated with the specification are not included. Instead, reference is made to BS6392, a new British Standard which

、implements ISO1388, a comprehensive series of tests for commercial grades of ethanol prepared, with the active participation of the United Kingdom, by Technical Committee47 “Chemistry” of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). For many purposes, for example in various analytical p

、rocedures, industrial methylated spirits complying with this British Standard may be used as an alternative to ethanol. In such cases, it is not permissible to use duty-free ethanol, received under the provisions of The Alcoholic Liquor Duties Act, 1979, Section10. It should be noted that the manufa

、cture and use of industrial methylated spirits are governed by The Methylated Spirits Regulations1983 (S.I. 1983, No. 252), and to avoid confusion it should be understood that this standard refers to the grade of methylated spirits known in the trade as “industrial methylated spirits” (I.M.S.) and n

、ot to “mineralized methylated spirits”. At the time of publication of this British Standard, no corresponding international standard exists. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct applica

、tion. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages1 and 2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date)

、and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3591:1985 BSI 08-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for industrial methylated spirits. It does not apply to material for medicinal use. NOTEThe titles of the p

、ublications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Description The material, a liquid, shall consist of spirits (essentially ethanol, C 2H 5 OH, and water) to which a denaturant has been added. It shall be clear, colourless and free from matter in suspension, as assessed

、 by visual inspection, and shall consist of a mixture of95 volumes of spirits of appropriate ethanol content with5 volumes of wood naphtha approved by the Commissioners of Customs and Excise. NOTEIn order to comply with legislation, the maximum methanol content is4% (m/m). 3 Sampling and size of sam

、ple 1) A representative sample of the material measuring not less than2500mL shall be taken from the bulk for the purpose of examination in accordance with this standard. The sample shall be placed in a clean, dry and air-tight, ground glass-stoppered bottle, or screw-capped bottle fitted with a pol

、yethylene cone insert, of such capacity that it is almost filled by the sample. When it is necessary to seal the container, care shall be taken to avoid the risk of contaminating the contents in any way. NOTESufficient ullage should be left in the bottle to avoid excessive pressure changes that coul

、d arise from temperature variations during storage and handling. About10% ullage is recommended. 4 Colour The colour of the material shall not exceed20 Hazen units when measured by the method described in BS5339. 5 Strength For a specified grade, the difference between the upper and the lower limiti

、ng values of strength, expressed as percentages by volume, shall not exceed0.4. NOTE 1The supplier should be consulted on the actual values for each grade. Strengths normally supplied are in the nominal range of92% (V/V) to100% (V/V). NOTE 2The strength may be determined by means of a glass alcohol

、hydrometer of the type specified in BS5470 and the appropriate tables, or by means of a density bottle (pyknometer) 2) . For the relationship between density in vacuo, density in air and strength seeAppendix A. 6 Residue on evaporation The residue on evaporation of the material shall not exceed0.01%

、 (m/m) when determined by the method described in BS4524. 7 Miscibility with water The material shall not show opalescence when diluted1+19 by volume with water complying with the requirements of BS3978, and tested by the method described in BS6392-5. 8 Alkalinity or acidity The material shall not b

、e alkaline to phenolphthalein and any acidity, calculated as acetic acid (CH 3 COOH), shall not exceed0.005%(m/m) when determined by the method described in BS6392-1. 9 Carbonyl compounds content The carbonyl compounds content of the material, calculated as acetaldehyde (CH 3 CHO), shall not exceed0

、.10% (m/m) when determined by the method described in BS6392-3. 1) Detailed information on the sampling of liquid chemical products is given in BS5309-1 and BS5309-3. 2) For example, a Gay-Lussac pyknometer complying with BS733-1 is suitable.BS3591:1985 2 BSI 08-1999 Appendix A Relation between dens

、ity in vacuo, density in air and approximate total alcoholic strength Table 1 gives the relation between density in vacuo, density in air and approximate total alcoholic strength, expressed either as a percentage by volume, or as a percentage by mass, at20 C. The values for density in vacuo are take

、n from “Practical alcohol tables”, volume2, issued by the Commission of the European Communities. The values for density in air are calculated from the formula relating the temperatures (in C), the percentage by mass of ethanol and the densities in vacuo (in kg/m 3 ) contained in “Recommendation No.

、22” of the International Organization of Legal Metrology. Densities in vacuo have been converted into densities in air using the conventional values for the density of air and that of the masses adopted in “Recommendation No. 33” of that Organization. The first two columns give an idea of the total

、alcoholic strength of the spirits at various densities. It is emphasized that this table is not part of the standard and that wood naphtha, which is largely methanol, will be included as alcohol.
