、ents for overbed tables of fixed height intended for use with beds complying with the requirements of BS1682. At that time tables mounted on a single cantilever support were considered to be for special applications outside the scope of BS2483. The cantilever type of table has become more popular fo

、r use over beds and chairs and in this first revision cantilever types of tables are included. The title of this standard has been modified to accommodate its wider scope. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are respon

、sible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to6, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been up

、dated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS2483:1977 BSI 09-1999 1 Section 1. General 1 Scope This British Standard specifies the basic requirements and performance tests for overbed tables of the can

、tilever and bridge types, the former capable of adjustment in height and the latter of fixed height. Section2 covers overbed tables of the cantilever type and section3 covers overbed tables of the bridge type. Adjustable height tables may be used as overchair tables. Tables with tilting tops are not

、 included in the scope of this standard. 2 References The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. Section 2. When tested by the method described in9.5 the table

、shall not suffer permanent distortion or become unsafe for use. 8.2 Requirements for strength and stability under conditions of static loading 8.2.1 When tested by the method described in9.6.1 the deflection of the top of the overbed table at any point shall not exceed10mm after15min under load. Aft

、er removal of the load the overbed table shall show no permanent deformation when measurements are taken at the same points as those taken when under load. 8.2.2 When tested by the method described in9.6.2 the maximum deflection of the top after the load has been in position for15min shall be10mm at

、 either of the corners furthermost from the support column and there shall be no permanent set on removal of the load. 8.3 Requirements for reliability under a dynamic load. At the completion of the test described in9.7 the table shall not have suffered damage which would render it unsafe in use. 8.

、4 Requirements for reliability of height adjusting mechanism. At the completion of the test described in9.8 the mechanism shall not have suffered damage which would render it unsafe or unable to operate correctly. 9 Methods of test 9.1 Principle. The principle of the tests is to apply forces that pr

、oduce, in the main members and joints, the maximum stress to which the tables are likely to be subjected when used over beds and chairs. 9.2 General conditions of test. The accuracy of linear measurement shall be 1.5mm. The accuracy of load measurement shall be1%. The rate of application of the load

、s shall be such that there is no risk of shock to the structure. Tests shall be carried out in an ambient temperature between18 C and24 C. All tests shall be carried out with the overbed table adjusted to the maximum height. 9.3 Inspection before testing. Immediately before being tested, the overbed

、 table shall be inspected and any apparent defects noted so that they shall not later be recorded as having been caused by the tests. 9.4 Test procedure. Overbed tables shall be subjected to the tests described in9.5 to9.8. 9.5 Tests for structural stability and structural strength. A uniformly dist

、ributed mass of65kg shall be applied to the table top and after a period of15min the mass shall be removed and the overbed table examined (see8.1). 9.6 Tests for structural stability and structural strength under conditions of static stress 9.6.1 The height of the table top above floor level shall b

、e measured at the corners furthermost from the support column. A uniformly distributed mass of25kg shall be applied to the top and after a period of15min measurements shall be taken at the same points and the deflection due to the stress shall be calculated (see8.2.1). The mass shall be removed and

、after5min measurement shall again be taken at the same points. 9.6.2 A 12 kg mass distributed over an area of155mm 2shall be applied to the table top so that the centre of the load is75mm from the unsupported end and centrally across the width. Measurement shall be taken at the above mentioned point

、s. The mass shall be removed and after5min measurements shall be taken to establish any permanent set (see8.2.2). 9.7 Test for structural stability and structural strength under conditions of dynamic stress. A mass of12kg distributed over an area of155mm 2shall be applied to the table top so that the centre of the load is75mm from the unsupported end and centrally across the width. This mass shall be applied and removed50000 times at a frequency between20 and40 cycles per minute. On completion of50000 cycles the table shall be examined (see8.3). 9.8 Test for reliabili
