In preparing this standard account has been taken of related International Organization for Standardization (ISO) work currently in hand. Oil sealing is not covered by ISO work. The

、spindle nose dimensions specified in this standard are similar to those in German Standard DIN55058 “Drilling spindle heads”, and permit the use of adjustable adaptors produced to DIN6327 “Adaptors”. Three types of adaptor are included in this standard as well as a single type of lock nut. All three

、 types of adaptor produced to this standard are interchangeable with but not identical to those produced to DIN6327. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a

The standard specifies requirements for three types of adjustable adaptors for the receipt of taper shank drills, reamers and spot facing cutters, for use in multi-spindle machines or heads. NOTEThe titles of the British Standards referred to in this standard are listed on page ii. 2 Spindle n

、oses 2.1 Nominal sizes The nominal size of the spindle nose shall be its nominal bore, which shall be identical with the nominal diameter of the adaptor with which it is to be used. The range of nominal sizes is: 16, 20, 25, 28, 36 and 48 mm. The 25 mm size is non-preferred. 2.2 Interchangeability S

、pindle noses shall be capable of accepting adjustable adaptors produced in accordance with3. 2.3 Dimensions Dimensions shall comply with the details given inTable 1. 2.4 Material 2.4.1 The spindles shall be manufactured from alloy steel which when suitably heat treated shall have a tensile strength

、of from 685 N/mm 2to 785 N/mm 22) . 2.4.2 The bearing and oil seal diameters and thrust faces and at least the first25mm length of the nose shall be heat treated to give a hardness within the range of45to50HRC (440 to505HV30). 2.5 Drift slots Drift slots may be provided either for the purpose of rem

、oving tools with the adjustable adaptor still in the spindle nose or for removing the adjustable adaptor itself. Where drift slots are provided they shall be as shown in the tables, and at90 from the keyway. Slots to these dimensions are suitable for adaptor removal. 2.6 Surface texture The spindle

、nose bore, bearing and oil seal surfaces shall not be rougher than0.44m R a . Other surfaces shall not be rougher than0.84m R a . 2.7 Chamfers Chamfers shall be produced on the inside and outside diameters of the spindle nose as indicated, as well as on the edges of the drift slots, where applicable

、. 2.8 Locking screw A grub screw conforming to BS4168 tolerance class6gexternal for locking the adaptor into the spindle nose shall be provided at180 from the keyway as indicated. A second grub screw13mm in from the first is optional. For details of corresponding thread in spindle nose seeTable 1. G

、rub screws shall be reduced in length if necessary so that they do not protrude when an adaptor is gripped. 2.9 Length of nose Basic lengths of nose are specified inTable 1. Where longer noses are required preferred increments of10mm shall be used. If external oil seals are not required the basic mi

、nimum nose lengths may be reduced by10mm. 2.10 Keyway A keyway to accept the Woodruff key of the appropriate adjustable adaptor shall be provided as shown in the tables. 2.11 Accuracy 2.11.1 A suggested method of mounting the spindles for accuracy tests is with the bearing diameter resting in V-bloc

、ks as shown inFigure 2 andFigure 3. 2.11.2 Bore concentricity and axial alignment may be determined by inserting into the spindle bore a suitable close fitting test bar and taking readings at positions shown inFigure 2 at distances Z and Z 1 . Deviation shall not exceed the values given inTable 2. 2

、.11.3 Oil seal diameter concentricity may be determined by direct readings on the diameter as shown inFigure 3. The deviation shall not exceed the values given inTable 2. 2) 1 N/mm 2= 1 MN/m 2 .BS1935:1972 2 BSI 02-2000 2.11.4 Nose outside diameter concentricity (only where required for quick change

、 adaptors) may be determined by a direct reading on the diameter as shown inFigure 3. The deviation shall not exceed the values given inTable 2. 2.11.5 The squareness of the thrust faces A and B (seeFigure 3) may be determined by direct readings taken at positions equal to E 2mm and B 2mm, respectiv

、Nominal sizes The nominal size of an adaptor shall be the nominal outside diameter, which shall be identical with the nominal bore of the spindle nose with which it is to be used. The range of nominal sizes specified in this standard is: 16, 20, 25, 28, 36 and 48 mm. The 25 mm size is non-preferred.

、 3.2 Interchangeability Adaptors shall be capable of fitting to spindle noses manufactured in accordance with2. 3.3 Dimensions Dimensions shall comply with the details given inTable 3 andTable 4. 3.4 Material The adaptor body and nut shall be manufactured from material which when suitably heat treat

、ed shall have a tensile strength of1250N/mm 2to1350N/mm 2and a hardness within the range of40to50HRC (380to505HV30). 3.5 Threads The threads shall be in accordance with BS 3) , “Trapezoidal threads” having a 30 inclusive flank angle. The 16mm size adaptor shall have a1.5mm pitch but all other sizes

、shall have a2mm pitch. 3.6 Bore taper The bore of the adaptor body shall be tapered in accordance with BS1660. 3.7 Drift slot 3.7.1 A drift slot corresponding to the appropriate Morse taper shall be provided at90 from the Woodruff key, to dimensions shown in BS1660. 3.7.2 The centrality of the drift

、 slot shall be as given in BS1660. 3.8 Chamfers Chamfers shall be produced at each end of the adaptor body, at the mouth of the taper bore and at the edges of the drift slot. In addition a suitable form of leadin should be machined on the closed end of the adaptor body, to facilitate insertion into

、the spindle nose. 3.9 Locking flat A flat for the purpose of locking the adaptor into the spindle nose by means of a hexagonal socket set screw conforming to BS4168 shall be produced on the adaptor body at180 from the Woodruff key. 3.10 Adjusting nut 3.10.1 The outermost diameter of adjusting nut sh

、all be knurled in accordance with the provisions for medium grade knurling given in BS1759. 3.10.2 The adjusting nut shall be capable of being locked in position with a socket set screw which shall not act directly onto the trapezoidal thread of the adaptor. The set screw shall conform to BS4168. 3.

、10.3 Tommy bar or C-spanner holes may be provided to facilitate adjustment. 3.11 Locking screw For reasons of safety, it is important that the locking screw when tightened shall not protrude beyond the outside diameter of the knurled portion of the nut. Therefore locking screws shall be reduced in length if necessary so that they do not protrude when the nut is locked. 3.12 Marking The body shall be marked with the nominal size of the adaptor and the number of its Morse tape
