、prepared under the direction of the Packaging and Freight Containers Standards Committee following the transfer of responsibility for BS1683 from the Dairying Industry Standards Committee. BS1683:1967 is withdrawn. This revision recognizes improvements which have taken place in manufacturing techniq

、ues by setting tighter limits on the permitted number of perforations, and incorporates requirements for heat sealing properties and nominal width tolerance. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for thei

In particular, attention is drawn to the Materials and Articles in Contact with Foodstuffs Regulations,1978 (S.I.1927). Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an insi

This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS1683:1987 BSI 09-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standa

、rd specifies material and performance requirements for aluminium foil of0.012mm or0.015mm nominal thickness, having a flexible protective coating, capable of being heat-sealed, on both sides, supplied in rolls for the wrapping of processed cheese, pasteurized cheese and pasteurized cheese spreads. N

、OTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Materials and manufacture 2.1 Material The chemical composition of the uncoated foil shall be that applicable to material1200 of BS1470. NOTEThe chemical composition of the flexible protective coati

、ng is not specified since this will be dependent on the material to be wrapped and the temperature conditions during storage and use. 2.2 Dimensions and tolerances 2.2.1 Thickness. The nominal thickness of the uncoated foil shall be either0.012mm or0.015mm. The permissible tolerance on the nominal t

、hickness shall be 10% when the average thickness is determined as described inAppendix A. 2.2.2 Width. The permissible tolerance on the nominal width of the coated foil shall be as given inTable 1. Table 1 Tolerances on nominal width 2.3 Limits of perforation When tested by the method described in A

、ppendix B, the number of perforations shall not exceed the following. 150 per square metre for foil of0.012mm nominal thickness 50 per square metre for foil of0.015mm nominal thickness The term “perforation” refers to minute holes which are visible as points of light only when the foil is viewed as

、described inAppendix B. There shall be no holes other than those referred to above. 3 Performance 3.1 Resistance to corrosion 3.1.1 When tested as described inC.2, there shall be no visible corrosion except at the edges of the test specimen. 3.1.2 When tested as described inC.3, there shall be no le

、se-free sample of about100cm 2and measure its area accurately. Cut the sample into pieces of convenient size to remove the coating. Place them in the extraction thimble of a Soxhlet extractor fitted with a condenser and connect the Soxhlet extractor to a round-bottom flask containing a suitable solv

、ent (see note, below), and boil for10min. Allow the apparatus to cool, remove the sample pieces, press them between blotting paper, warm to expel the last traces of solvent, cool and weigh to constant mass, to the nearest0.5mg. NOTEAcetone or butanone are usually satisfactory solvents but other solv

、ents may be employed. A.2 Calculate the thickness of the foil. For this purpose2.71g/cm 3shall be used as the density of aluminium. Appendix B Method for the determination of the number of perforations B.1 Apparatus A suitable form of apparatus is shown inFigure 1. Mount a40watt pearl or opal electr

、ic bulb in a wooden box175mm long,125mm wide and100mm deep. Across the top of the box place a piece of ground or opal glass, and6mm above it a piece of clear glass, the box and the space between the two sheets of glass being ventilated. Fold a sheet of dark coloured opaque paper,500mm 300mm in size,

、 to form a double sheet250mm 300mm. Cut a rectangular hole in the centre of the double sheet, the side at right angles to the folded edge of the paper being12mm less in length than the width of the foil strip to be examined, and the other side being50mm. Fold the paper over the top and two sides of

、the box and secure it by means of elastic bands as shown in Figure 1, a piece of paper being cut away if necessary to clear the electric cable lead-in. Use the apparatus in a dark room with the lamp turned on. B.2 Procedure Discard the first metre of the roll and examine not less than1m. Attach the

、coated foil to be examined to a piece of stiff paper threaded between the two layers of opaque paper, and draw it through intermittently,40mm at a time, so as to close the illuminated window. The perforations may easily be seen and counted. The number of perforations per square metre shall be calcul

、ated from the number observed, the length of strip examined, and the width of the illuminated window. Appendix C Tests for resistance to corrosion C.1 Reagents Reagents shall be a general laboratory grade purity. Acid test solution.1g of copper sulphate pentahydrate and5mL of concentrated hydrochlor

、ic acid, of density1.18g/cm 3 , made up to100mL with distilled water. C.2 Corrosion test C.2.1 Procedure Discard the first metre of the roll then cut a flat sheet of the coated foil not less than100cm 2in area. Float the sheet, with the surface to be in contact with the cheese downwards on the surfa

、ce of the acid test solution. At the end of30min examine the sheet with the naked eye for visible corrosion. C.2.2 Test report Report the presence or absence of corrosion and if present its position. C.3 Dish test C.3.1 Apparatus The apparatus shall comprise the following. a) A piece of polyurethane

、 foam, at least125mm long,125mm wide and76mm thick. b) A polished rectangular former75mm long and30mm wide and at least25mm deep, with the edges and corners radiused with a radius of5mm, provided with a centrally fixed handle (seeFigure 2). C.3.2 Procedure Discard the first metre of the roll, and th

、en cut a piece of coated foil100mm square. If the reel is less than100mm wide, cut a piece100mm long by the full reel width. Place the piece of coated foil, with the side to be tested uppermost, on top of the piece of polyurethane foam and place the rectangular former centrally on top of the foil. U

、sing the handle, push the rectangular former down into the foam using a force not so great as to completely compress it. The foil forms a dish round the rectangular former which is then removed. Partly fill the formed dish with the acid test solution. After30min examine the dish for evidence of leak

、age of the test solution through the foil. C.3.3 Test report Report the presence or absence of leakage.
