Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 FIPG by-products, nchemicals that are releasedduring the curing process.3.1.2 formed-in-place gaskets (FIPG), none- or two-compon

    6、ent adhesive or sealant applied wet, uncured, to a jointsurface where the mating parts are assembled before the curingprocess is complete.3.1.2.1 DiscussionWhen fully cured, it forms a barrier tomedia migration across the joint.3.1.3 multicomponent FIPG, nFIPG that is packaged intwo or more parts, w

    7、hich are combined before application, andupon combination, a coreactant from one part of the adhesivechemically reacts, at ambient conditions, with a coreactantfrom another part of the FIPG.3.1.4 radiation-cured FIPG, nFIPG that contains unre-acted monomers or oligomers that are polymerized by expo-

    8、sure to radiation such as ultraviolet (UV) or microwave.3.1.4.1 DiscussionCure conditions and equipment mustbe specified by FIPG manufacturer and shall be used in placeof the humidity cure activation. Conditions and equipmentshall be detailed in the final report.3.1.5 volatile content, nLow molecula

Summary of Practice4.1 This practice is used to determine the volatile content ofsilicone adhesives and sealants upon curing for transportationapplications.5. Significance and Use5.1 The qua

    10、ntity of volatile components in FIPG siliconeadhesive and sealant by-products can be established by this testmethod. This test method does not identify the components.6. Apparatus6.1 Humidity Chamber with Temperature ControllerAforced ventilation oven conforming to the requirements forType IIA in Sp

    11、ecification E 145 with humidity control capa-bility. The oven should be capable of maintaining a tempera-ture of 40 6 1C.6.1.1 The oven shall be equipped with a National Institute ofStandards and Technology (NIST) traceable calibrated ther-mometer or thermocouple.6.1.2 The oven temperature shall be

    12、controlled by anaccurate, reliable thermoregulator, maintaining the set pointwithin 61.0C or better.6.1.3 The inside of the oven shall be free of contaminationor surface deposits. Stainless steel oven liner should be used toreduce corrosion caused by continued exposure to decomposi-tion gases.6.2 Sa

    13、mple ContainerA weighing vessel of low shapedesign in glass, aluminum, or stainless steel of sufficient size tohold a 10-g sample. An aluminum weighing dish, 57 mm indiameter and 18 mm in depth, is suitable.1This practice is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee F03 on Gaskets andis the direct res

Preparation of Apparatus7.1 Maintain the hum

    16、idity chamber at the temperature andhumidity of the test for at least 1 h before insertion of thespecimens.7.2 Before test operation, verify the uniformity of tempera-ture within the oven according to Specification E 145. Theairflow in the oven should be 0.3 m3/min (10 ft3/min).7.3 Before test opera

    17、tion, verify the relative humidity of theenvironmental chamber using a measurement device in accor-dance with Test Method D 4230.8. Procedure8.1 Dry the weighing vessel in the oven at 110 6 1C for30 min and cool to room temperature in a desiccator. Tare theweighing vessel to the nearest 0.001 g.8.2

    18、Spread approximately 10 g of FIPG sample evenly overthe bottom of the weighing vessel and weigh to the nearest0.001 g. Record the initial sample weight, M.8.3 Place the sample-filled weighing dish in the humiditychamber controlled at 40 6 1C and 90 6 3 % relativehumidity.8.4 After 24 h, remove the w

    19、eighing vessels, cool to roomtemperature in a desiccator, and weigh to the nearest 0.001 g.Return the weighing dish to the humidity chamber for anadditional 4 h, cool to room temperature in the desiccator, andreweigh. Constant sample weight is reached when the succes-sive weighing differs by 0.001 g

    20、 or less; if the weight variationis greater than 0.001 g, continue the 4-h heating-weighingcycle until constant weight is obtained. Record this weight asM.8.5 Test a minimum of three samples and average theresults.9. Calculation9.1 For each determination, calculate the weight percent ofvolatile matt

    21、er by-products from FIPG as follows:% Volatile 5 M M!/M# 3 100 (1)where:M = initial sample weight as recorded in 8.2, andM = final sample weight as recorded in 8.4.10.
