Summary of Test Method4.1 In this test method samples of cushioning materials aresubjected to leaching by immersing specimens in flowing

、softened water for a period of 6 h and then dried. Twofire-test-response characteristics of the cushioning materials, namely the surface flammability, in accordance with TestMethod D3675, and the specific optical density of smoke, inaccordance with Test Method E662, are measured on speci-mens of the

、materials which have undergone the water treat-ment. The results are then compared with results obtained fromuntreated specimens of the same materials, to determine thepercentage change in each fire-test-response characteristic.5. Significance and Use5.1 The fire performance of a material or product

、 is affectedby a combination of its fire-test-response characteristics. Twoof the most commonly determined fire-test-response character-istics of cushioning materials are the surface flammability, inaccordance with Test Method D3675, and the specific opticaldensity of smoke, in accordance with Test

、Method E662.5.2 Cushioning materials used in upholstery applications arepotentially exposed to leaching of the active ingredients due to(1) water solubility of the treating agents or (2) exposure tohigh humidity.5.3 In view of the importance that the fire performance ofthe cushioning materials used

、in upholstery applications re-main constant throughout their intended service life, this testmethod provides a means to test for the potential change in twofire-test-response characteristics due to leaching.6. Apparatus6.1 Water TankUse a water container or tank of a shapeand size sufficient for the

、 specimens to be fully submersibletherein, to ensure full water contact with all surfaces. Deter-mine the volume of the water container in litres by filling itwith water and measuring the volume of the water. Confirmthat the container is large enough that the ratio of thespecimen(s) to water shall b

、e no less than 1 to 20 by volume,by comparison with the volume of the specimens to be used, asdetermined in 8.4.NOTE 1The maximum volume of each specimen to be tested in TestMethod D3675 is 1.73 L. The maximum volume of each specimen to betested in Test Method E662 is 0.30 L.6.2 Softened Water:6.2.1

、 Use an established water softening procedure thatensures the presence of negligible amounts of alkaline oralkaline earth ions (principally sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium).NOTE 2It is advisable to have the facility running water tested beforeacquiring a new water softening system. The use

、of a water indicatorsystem in which a light turns on when the water contains excessive ionsis recommended. A system consisting of one carbon tank and two mixedbed tanks in series, with a quality light in between the mixed beds, tomaintain a water quality of 2 MV/cm or greater, is suitable for thisap

、plication. The concept of the “quality light” is that, when the light goesout, the first mixed bed is removed and replaced by the second mixed bed,and a new second mixed bed is installed in its place. The carbon tank isa requirement, but it prolongs the life of the mixed beds.NOTE 3The presence of a

、lkaline or alkaline earth metal ions has beenshown to possibly affect the flammability performance.6.2.2 Provide a means of supplying a continuous flow ofsoftened water to the bottom of the container at a rate of at leastbetween two and three water changes per hour. Set thetemperature of the flowing

、 softened water to 20 6 5C (68 69F).6.3 Provide a means at the top of the water container fordisposing of the overflow.6.4 Ensure that the apparatus has a means of suspending thespecimens in such a manner that they are not in contact witheach other during the leaching process. Ensure too that contac

、tof the specimens with the container is minimized.6.5 There are two alternative methods for specimen place-ment during leaching:6.5.1 Place specimens in tank within a wire mesh cage, or6.5.2 Suspend specimens from a rod within the tank bymeans of small clips and weigh them at the bottom.7. Safety Pr

、ecautions7.1 The test methods associated with assessing the fire-test-response characteristics of the cushioning materials are fire testmethods, which are inherently hazardous.7.2 In each of the fire test methods, the test proceduresinvolve high temperatures and combustion processes. Hazardstherefor

、e exist for burns, ignition of extraneous objects orclothing, and inhalation of combustion products. The operatormust take appropriate precautions during the insertion andremoval of the test specimens, for example by using protectivegloves. The operator must ensure not to touch either theignition so
