、Designation: E 2129 05Standard Practice forData Collection for Sustainability Assessment of BuildingProducts1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E 2129; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of la

、st revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This practice covers a set of instructions for collectingdata to be used in assessing the sustainability of buildingpro

、ducts for use in both commercial and residential buildings.1.1.1 There are many features of a building that contributeto sustainability; one of them is the selection of products foruse in a building. Other key features influencing sustainabilityinclude, but are not limited to: overall efficiency of

、the designof the building, the impact the building has on the habits of theoccupants, and the impact the building has on the microclimateand macroclimate. This standard addresses sustainability issuesrelated to building products. This standard does not addresssustainability issues related to overall

、 building design, siteselection, building operations, or other features influencingsustainability.1.1.2 While it is recommended that users rely on profes-sional judgment informed by both environmental expertise andspecific knowledge of the intended use of the product, thisstandard provides no instru

Interpretation of the data obtained is the responsibil-ity of the user of this standard.1.1.3 This document cannot replace education or experienceand should be used in conjunction with professional judgment. Not all aspects of this practice may be appli

、cable in allcircumstances. This practice is not intended to represent orreplace the standard of care by which the adequacy of a givenprofessional service must be judged, nor should this documentbe applied without consideration of a projects many uniqueaspects. The word “standard” in the title means

、only that thedocument has been approved through the ASTM consensusprocess.1.2 This standard is organized according to the ConstructionSpecifications Institutes (CSI) MasterFormat2sections to pro-mote consistency in the evaluation of building products.1.3 This standard includes general, comprehensive

、 datarequirements. Depending upon the building product, certaindata requirements may not apply given the unique character-istics of the product and the potential environmental impactsrelated to the intended use of the product. Depending upon thebuilding product, certain data requirements may need to

、 beadded as appropriate to the unique characteristics of theproduct and the potential environmental impacts related to theintended use of the product.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this

The us

Significance and Use5.1 This standard provides a practice for data collection forthe purpose of assessing the sustainability of building products.Such data can inform decisions relative to construction, reno-vation, repair,

、 and maintenance of buildings with the goal ofpromoting sustainability and sustainable development.5.1.1 The users of this standard include building industryprofessionals who possess a broad, general understanding ofsustainability issues relative to the performance of buildings.Such users may includ

、e planners, developers, architects, engi-neers, interior designers, contractors, owners, financial organi-zations related to the buildings industry, building materials andproduct manufacturers, government agencies including build-ing officials, and other building professionals.5.1.2 Users should not

、e that, subsequent to the preliminaryassessment facilitated by the comparative information col-lected in accordance with this standard, additional detailed andmore technical information may be required in order toadequately assess specific needs for specific applications.5.2 There are many environme

、ntal features and issues, eachwith local, regional, and global implications, involved insustainability. It is becoming increasingly necessary to be ableto quantify complex sustainability data relative to buildingindustry information tools. This standard provides a format forrelating the commonly acc

、epted sustainability principles tobuilding industry data collection methods. Users may wish toconsider other building product attributes for which sustain-ability principles are deemed to be important or measurementmethodologies may exist, or both. For example, the embodiedenergy of the product and

、greenhouse emitted over a productslifecycle, which can have a significant effect on the overallsustainability of a building product, may be deemed important.5.3 The format for data collection is intended to facilitate acost-effective and efficient assessment of sustainability issuesrelative to build

、ing materials.5.4 The scientific understanding of the functioning andinterrelation of ecosystems continues to evolve; nevertheless, there are many accepted principles relative to the design, construction, and operation of buildings for improved sustain-ability. Commonly accepted environmental principl

、e impact ofthe building product on IEQ (Criteria Category 4), and thecorporate environmental policy of the company manufacturingor fabricating the building product, or both (Criteria Category5).5.5 To the greatest extent feasible, questions are designed toprompt simple yes-or-no responses.16The term
