Scope1.1 This guide covers the physical and chemical require-ments of virgin or recovered foundry sand for use as a fineaggregate in asphalt mixtures.1.2 Th

    3、is guide is for use by contractors, foundry sandsuppliers, or other purchasers as part of the purchase documentdescribing the material to be furnished. Those responsible forselecting the proportions for the asphalt mixture should havethe responsibility of determining the proportions of foundrysand a

    4、s a fine aggregate.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.4 The text of this standard references notes and footnoteswhich provide explanatory information. Ordering Information4.1 The order for the material under this guide shouldinclude the following i

    17、nformation:4.1.1 Quantity, in metric tonnes.4.1.2 If the soundness of the material in 6.5.1 is required,indicate whether the test was conducted with sodium ormagnesium sulfate.4.1.3 Any exceptions or additions to this guide.4.2 CertificationWhen specified in the purchase order orcontract, the purcha

    18、ser should be furnished certification thatsamples representing each lot have been tested as directed inthis guide and the specified requirements have been met. Whenspecified in the purchase order or contract, a report of the testresults should be furnished.5. General Characteristics5.1 The foundry s

    19、and should consist of hard, tough, durablepieces of fine aggregates. The aggregates should be processed,as necessary to meet the requirements of this guide, bycrushing or screening (or both) and by magnetic separation forthe removal of metallic particles.5.2 The foundry sand should be free of potent

    20、ial wastestreams in foundry facilities: slag, dust, sludge, and other wastestreams.5.3 At the time of delivery, by visual inspection, the foundrysand should not contain deleterious amounts of sand agglom-erations or foreign materials such as clay, loams, wood, trampmetal, hard cores, and other mill

    21、wastes. (See Note 1.)NOTE 1Deleterious contents typically do not exceed 4 to 6 %.Plasticity index usually does not exceed 4 %.6. Material Quality6.1 The grading of the foundry sand should conform to therequirements for grading prescribed in Table 1 or as prescribedby the end user.6.2 The grain shape

    22、 of foundry sand particles should besub-angular to round, as per Practice D2488.6.3 The relative density of foundry sand should be between2.4 and 2.8.6.4 The maximum moisture content of the foundry sandshould be 5 % or less.6.5 Optional Physical Requirements:6.5.1 Soundness (Test Method C88)Foundry

    23、sand sub-jected to five cycles of the soundness test should have aweighted average loss not greater than 15 % when sodiumsulfate is used or 20 % when magnesium sulfate is used.6.5.2 Foundry sand failing to meet the requirements of 6.5.1could be regarded as meeting the requirements of soundness,provi

    24、ded that the supplier of the foundry sand demonstrates tothe purchaser or specifier that bituminous mixtures containingthe proposed foundry sand have previously provided satisfac-tory service when exposed to weathering similar to that to beencountered.7. Environmental Requirements7.1 Foundry sand fr

    25、om bronze/brass foundry is not coveredin this standard.7.2 The foundry sand should meet all applicable local, state,and federal environmental requirements in effect at the time ofuse.7.2.1 ToxicityThe characteristics of leachate from thefoundry sand should be tested using the synthetic precipitation

    26、leaching procedure (SPLP) described in EPA SW-846 TestMethod 1312 (see Note 2), or appropriate test method asapproved by the purchaser. Results should indicate that allareas tested (inorganic chemicals and organic chemicals) arebelow regulatory limits.NOTE 2The synthetic precipitation leaching proce

    27、dure (SPLP) is awater leaching procedure for determining solubility/availability of variousmetals in a sample.7.2.2 ReactivityThe amount of reactive cyanide and reac-tive sulfide in the foundry sand should be tested using theinterim guidance for reactive cyanide (EPA SW-846 Section7.3.3) and interim

    28、 guidance for reactive sulfide (EPA SW-846Section 7.3.4), respectively. Results should be below regula-tory limits.8. Sampling and Testing Methods8.1 Sample and test the foundry sand in accordance withone or more of the following methods, except as otherwiseprovided in this guide. It is not intended

Package Marking and Shipping Information10.1 When the foundry sand is delivered in pa

    33、ckage, thename and the brand of the manufacturer, the type of foundrythat supplied the material, and the weight of the foundry sandcontained therein should be plainly marked on each package.Similar information should also be provided in the shippinginvoices accompanying the shipment of packaged or b

    34、ulkfoundry sand. All packages should be in good condition at thetime of inspection.11.
