Scope1.1 This standard provides a classification system for tabu-lating the properties of unfilled, single-layer plas
3、tic films.NOTE 1The classification system serves many of the needs ofindustries using plastic films. The standard is subject to revision as theneed requires; therefore, the latest revision should always be used.NOTE 2Film is defined in Terminology D883 as an optional term forsheeting having a nomina
4、l thickness no greater than 0.25 mm 0.010 in.1.2 The classification system and subsequent line call-out(specification) is intended to be a means of identifying plasticfilms used for applications including industrial, packaging,construction, and agriculture. It is not intended for the selectionof mat
5、erials to be used in films. This selection should be madeby those having expertise in the plastics field after carefulconsideration of the end-use requirements, the environment towhich the films will be exposed, the fabrication process to beemployed, the inherent properties of the material not cover
6、edin this document, and the economic factors.1.3 This classification system is based on the premise thatplastic films can be arranged into broad generic families basedon materials with similar composition using basic film prop-erties. A system is thus established which, together with valuesdescribin
7、g additional requirements, permits as complete adescription as desired of the selected film.1.4 In all cases where the provisions of this classificationsystem would conflict with the referenced ASTM specificationfor a particular film product, the latter shall take precedence.NOTE 3It is strongly rec
8、ommended that this classification system beused for all new applications and specifications and that the specificationof films using existing standards be expeditiously withdrawn or convertedto this classification system.1.5 This classification system applies to commercial prod-ucts and, as such, th
9、ere is no control over the manufacturingparameters employed in producing the film. It shall be theresponsibility of those developing the specification documentsutilizing this classification system to identify the criticalparameters and values to be used for the cell classifications andsuffix require
10、ments.1.6 UnitsThe values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Thevalues stated in each system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other.Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conf

Significance and Use4.1 The purpose of this classification system is to provide amethod of adequately identifying plastic films using a systemthat applies universally for plastic films. It further provides ameans for specifyi
27、ng these films by the use of a simple linecall-out designation.4.2 This classification system was developed to permit theaddition of additional film products and property values.4.3 It is intended that the classification of plastic sheeting,0.25 mm 0.010 in. thickness, multi-layer structures, blends
28、,and other variants will be addressed in related standards.5. Classification5.1 Films shall be classified by their generic polymercomposition, specific sub-group, type, and other definingcharacteristics as shown in the following examples.NOTE 5It should be emphasized that the scope of the followinge
29、xamples and tables are not limited to the information shown and can besupplemented to include additional materials, descriptors, properties, etc.as needed.5.2 Generic classification shall follow the examples shownin Table 1 or, in accordance with D883, followed by the letter“F” for film.5.3 If appli
30、cable, the film is further classified by sub-groupsand types identified by a single-digit numerical codes as shownby the examples described in Tables 2-4.5.4 The film shall be further classified with two single digitsto describe the process used to manufacture the film and thefilm gauge as shown by

Basic Requirements6.1 A line call-out assembled using this
32、 classification sys-tem becomes a specification. The followingsummarizes the line call-out and the entire system as detailedin this standard.7. Suffix Requirements7.1 When specific requirements are needed
34、to supplementthe general classifications, they shall be specified through theuse of suffixes. In general, the first suffix letter indicates thespecial requirement needed and sufficient digits are used toindicate the specific requirements.NOTE 8When using the suffixes for specific requirements, the u
35、sermust keep in mind that not all tests are routinely conducted by thesupplier. When these requirements are necessary to identify particularcharacteristics important to specific applications they shall be specified.7.1.1 In many cases, it is necessary to specify properties inboth the machine and tra
36、nsverse directions due to the effects oforientation. In order to avoid lengthy and cumbersome call-outs, it is recommended that the specific requirements belimited in number to five (5) and represent only the morecritical properties. Additional test methods that can be used toprovide further charact
37、erization of films are to be found inAppendix X1.NOTE 9The specific critical properties will, most likely, vary with thegeneric classification.7.2 Although the values listed in cell tables include therange of properties available in existing materials, that does notimply that every possible combinat
38、ion of properties exists orcan be obtained.7.3 The specific test procedure and conditions to be usedshall be specified or referenced in the cell table of theclassification document.7.4 Examples of typical suffix requirements, using PE as anexample, are shown in Tables 6-10. General Requirements8.1 The composition of the specified films sha
42、ll be uniformand shall conform to the requirements specified herein.9. Detail Requirements9.1 The film shall conform to the requirements prescribed inthe appropriate table (generic classification and suffix) as theyapply.9.2 For the purpose of determining conformance with thisclassification system,
43、all specified limits used in the specificstandards, are absolute limits as defined in Practice E29.9.3 With the absolute method, an observed value or acalculated value is not rounded, but is to be compared directlywith the specified limiting value. Conformance or nonconfor-mance with the specificati
44、on is based on this comparison.10. Sampling10.1 Sampling shall be statistically adequate to satisfy therequirements of 14.4. A lot of film shall be considered as a unitof manufacture as prepared for shipment, and can consist oftwo or more “production runs” or batches.11. Number of Tests11.1 The numb
45、er of tests conducted shall be consistent withthe requirements of 10.1 and 14.4.12. Specimen Preparation and Conditioning12.1 The test specimens shall be prepared and conditionedas specified in the appropriate ASTM test procedures cited.13. Test Methods13.1 Determine the properties enumerated in thi
46、s classifica-tion system by means of the test procedures cited.14. Inspection and Certification14.1 Inspection and certification of the material suppliedunder this classification system shall be for conformance to therequirements specified herein.14.2 Lot-acceptance inspection shall be the basis on
47、whichacceptance or rejection of the lot is made.
