Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the perfor-mance of mixed bed ion exchange resin cartridges in the activeform when used for

    3、deionization. The test can be used todetermine the initial capacity of unused cartridges or theremaining capacity of used cartridges. In this case performanceis defined as ion exchange capacity (or throughput) to twodefined endpoints. The method does not measure organics anddoes not attempt to deter

    4、mine the ultimate water qualityattainable by the cartridge.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is there

Terminology3.1 Definitions: For definitions of t

Summary of Test Method4.1 This test method consists of exhausting a cartridge ofmixed bed ion exchange material to a specific end point with aninfluent solution of known composition and volume.5. Significance and Use5.1 This test method can be use

    8、d to evaluate unused mixedbed ion exchange cartridges for conformance to specifications.5.2 This test method provides for the calculation of capacityin terms of the volume of water treated to a conductivity endpoint.5.3 The test method as written assumes that the ion ex-change resins in the cartridg

    9、e are either partially or fullyconverted to the H+or OH-form. Regeneration of the resins isnot part of this method.5.4 This test method provides for the calculation of capacityon a cartridge basis.5.5 This test method may be used to test different size mixedbed resin cartridges. The flow rate of tes

    10、t water and thefrequency of sampling are varied to compensate for theapproximate volume of resin in the test cartridge.6. Apparatus6.1 Test Assembly (Fig. 1), consisting of the following:6.1.1 Cartridge, and pressure vessel, if required. Connec-tions shall be provided at the top and the bottom for t

    11、headmission and removal of the ion exchange test water asdescribed in 7.3.6.1.2 Test solution tank. Adequate means of regulating andmeasuring flow through the cartridge shall be provided. If thetest flow rate (8.1) can not be obtained by gravity feed, then apump should be used.6.1.3 Measuring circui

    12、t and in-line conductivity cells shallbe as described in Test Methods D 1125.Acontinuous recorderis recommended.7. Reagents and Materials7.1 Purity of ReagentsReagent grade chemicals shall beused in all tests. Unless otherwise indicated, it is intended thatall reagents shall conform to the specifica

    16、ll reference to water in this testmethod shall be understood to mean Reagent Water Type I orII conforming to Specification D 1193.7.3 Ion Exchange Test Water (10 meq/L, or 500 ppm asCaCO3)Prepare a test water containing, in each litre:7.3.1 0.294 g of calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl2-2H2O),7.3.2 0.

    17、336 g of oven-dried (105C) sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3), and7.3.3 0.120 g of oven-dried (105C) anhydrous magnesiumsulfate (MgSO4).7.4 Asingle test requires approximately 50 Lof this solutionfor each litre of mixed bed ion exchange resin that a cartridgecontains.8. Procedure8.1 Measure the outside diam

    18、eter and length of the ionexchange cartridge. Calculate the overall cartridge volume (inlitres) as follows:Vc5p D2L4! 1000!where:D = the cartridge diameter, in cmL = the cartridge length, in cm8.2 Using the cartridge volume calculated in 8.1, calculatethe test flow rate (in mL/min) as follows:Q 5 30

    19、0Vcwhere:Vc= cartridge volume, in litresNOTE 1For multitube cartridges the volume is the sum of the volumesof all the tubes.8.3 Slowly introduce reagent water at the bottom of thecartridge until the cartridge is full to expel air. Allow water tostand in the cartridge for 124 hours to “condition” the

    20、 resinprior to the test.8.4 Slowly introduce test water. Increase the flow rate Q tothe value determined in 9.1, adjusting the rate as required witha valve or other flow restriction in the effluent line.8.5 Measure and record the effluent conductivity each volu-metric increment equal to 2 Vc. Contin

    21、ue until the 1.0 S/cmvalue is reached, then record the volume of test water pro-cessed to a 1.0 S/cm endpoint (V1) in litres.8.6 After reaching 1.0 S/cm, take conductivity readingsevery 0.5 Vcuntil a reading greater than 50.0 S/cm (20 000ohm-cm) is obtained.8.7 Continue the readings every minute unt

    22、il two successiveproduct conductivity readings exceed 50.0 S/cm (20 000ohm-cm). Stop the flow of test water and record the total testvolume corresponding to the first of two successive 50.0 S/cmreadings as the total volume (VT) of test water used, in litres.9. Calculation9.1 The operating capacity i

Report10.1 The report of results of this test method should includenot only the capacity as calculated above but the end pointused. For certification purposes the averaging

Precision and Bias11.1 The precision and bias for this method is expected to bethe same as for Test Method D 3375, upon which it is based.The collaborative study for Test Method D 3375 involved sixlaboratories, six operators, and three replicat

    28、e determinationson one material, IRN-150 mixed bed resin.11.2 The single-operator precision, in a given laboratory, forthis test method is equal to 62.3 % of the column capacityexpressed as milliequivalents per cartridge.11.3 The precision of this test method, within its designatedrange, may be expr

    29、essed as follows:ST 5 0.168 0.0208Xwhere:ST= overall precision in meq/mL, andX = mixed bed cartridge capacity expressed as meq/mLfor a conductivity end point.11.4 Bias cannot be determined as in Test Method D 3375since known standards are not available.12. Quality Control12.1 In the analysis of ion

    30、exchange resins, it is not possibleto prepare a known standard resin for comparison with theactual samples. Therefore it is impossible to test the accuracyof the results, and the method does not include a bias statement.12.2 Analysts are expected to run replicate samples todetermine if the results a

    31、re within the expected precision statedin Section 11.12.3 Analysis of the cartridge effluent is subject to thequality control requirements of the referenced analyticalmethod.13.
