、Designation: D 6203 06An American National StandardStandard Test Method forThermal Stability of Way Lubricants1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 6203; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of

、last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the evaluation of the thermalstability of hydrocarbonbased way lubricants, although oxi-datio

、n may occur during the test.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Summary of Test Method3.1 A beaker containing test oil and copper and steel rods isplaced in a gravity convection electric oven for 24 h at a testtemperature of 100C. At the completion of the test, the copperand steel rods are visually rated for discolor

、ation and thebeaker is visually evaluated for deposits.4. Significance and Use4.1 Thermal stability characterizes physical and chemicalproperty changes which may adversely affect an oils lubricat-ing performance. This test method evaluates the thermalstability of a way lubricant in the presence of c

、opper and steelrods at 100C. Deposits and rod colors are the evaluationcriteria. No correlation of the test to field service has beenmade.4.2 This test method is intended for use in qualifying a waylubricant, rather than for quality control or condition monitor-ing purposes.5. Clean the rods with the 320 gritsilicon carbide abrasive cloth while rotating the rods in a drillchuck at 1700 to 1800 rev/min. Clean the surface until it has abright copper or steel appearance. Discard rods when diame

Finish the rods to a lightly polished surface finish.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D02 onPetroleum Products and Lubricants and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommitteeD02.
