    6、nology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 coatings remover, na product that is formulated forthe removal of paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, or polyurethanetop coats, or related coatings, or both.4. Summary of Practice4.1 Test panels are coated and force dried. The coatingsremo

    7、ver is applied with a brush and the loosened coating islifted with a plastic scraper after a specified time. Coatingsremoval efficiency is determined and recorded using a ratingscheme of 5 to 0.5. Significance and Use5.1 Old coatings, such as paint or related coatings, may haveto be removed from a s

    8、urface before successful recoating canoccur. This practice can be used to test the coatings removalefficiency of products designed for such use.6. Apparatus6.1 Forced Draft Oven, Type IB, in accordance with Speci-fication E 145.6.2 Paint Brush, containing nylon/polyester bristles.6.3 Plastic Paint S

    9、craper.6.4 Very Fine Garnet Abrasive-Type Sandpaper, 240 to 220grade.6.5 Stopwatch.7. Testing Materials7.1 FinishesIt is recommended to test coatings removerson a variety of finishes such as latex enamel, alkyd enamel,polyurethane, varnish, shellac and nitrocellulose lacquer, or asagreed upon betwee

    10、n the purchaser and the seller.7.2 Wood test panels of solid wood or wood laminate suchas birch plywood, fir, pine, oak or walnut. Smooth sawn panelsof dimensions not less than 300 by 300 mm (12 by 12 in.) and8-mm (516-in.) thick.7.3 Steel test panels with dimensions of 150 by 300 mm (6by 12 in.) an

    11、d 0.8-mm (0.032-in.) thick.8. Panel Preparation8.1 Wood Panel PreparationStore the wood panels for aleast 6 days under standard conditions as specified in Specifi-cation D 3924.8.2 Sand the panels lightly with sandpaper as defined in 6.4and wipe them clean of debris.1This practice is under the juris

Allow the coating to dry overnight under standardconditi

    15、ons as specified in Specification D 3924.8.4 Apply a second coat of the same type of coating of adifferent color (if pigmented) using the same method. Forcedry at 50C (120F) overnight. Allow the panel to cool toambient temperature.8.5 Apply and dry a third coat of the same type of coatingas in 8.4.N

    16、OTE 1Apply clear finishes in two coats following the manufactur-ers recommended application instructions under the same drying condi-tions described in 8.3 and 8.4.8.6 Metal PreparationClean the metal panels as describedin Procedure D, Practice D 609 until panels are free fromdebris, oily film, and

    17、corrosion.8.7 Apply three coats of the test finish as directed in 8.3, 8.4,and 8.5.9. Procedure9.1 Apply coatings remover in accordance with the manu-facturers instructions, using a solvent-resistant brush unlessotherwise directed by the manufacturer. Stroke the surface inone direction only. Start t

    18、he stopwatch after the panel has beenfully coated. Leave the panel in the horizontal position duringthe test.9.2 Wait 15 min for solvent-borne removers and 60 min forwater-borne removers, or at times specified by the manufac-turer for the type of coating being removed.9.3 Scrape the surface with a p

    19、lastic paint scraper to removethe coating without damaging the substrate.9.4 Rate the test panel for coatings removal efficiency on ascale from 5 to 0 in accordance with the following:Rating Amount of Coatings Removal, %5 10047535022110 No removal9.5 Rate the effect of the coatings removal on the co
