Scope1.1 This test method assesses the elastic recovery of anasphalt material measured by the recoverable strain determinedaft

    3、er severing an elongated briquet specimen of the material ofthe form described in 4.1. The specimens are pulled to aspecified distance at a specified speed and at a specifiedtemperature. Unless otherwise specified, the test shall be madeat a temperature of 25 6 0.5C 77 6 0.9F and with a speedof 5 cm

    4、/min 6 5%.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-confor

    5、mancewith the standard.1.3 WarningMercury has been designated by the UnitedStates Environmental Protection Agency and many state agen-cies as a hazardous material that can cause central nervoussystem, kidney and liver damage. United States13. Significance and Use3.1 This test method is useful in confirming that a materialhas been added to the as

    15、phalt to provide a significant elasto-meric characteristic. It does not necessarily identify the type oramount of material added.4. Apparatus4.1 MoldThe mold3shall be similar in design to thatshown in Fig. 1. The mold shall be made of brass, 10.0 6 0.1mm thick, the ends b and b being known as clips,

    16、 and the partsa and a as sides of the mold, with a brass base plate that islarger than the assembled mold. The dimensions of theassembled mold shall be as shown in Fig. 1 with the permis-sible variations indicated. (See Note 1.)4.2 Water Bath for Conditioning SpecimenMaintain thewater bath at the sp

    17、ecified test temperature, varying not morethan 0.5C 0.9F from this temperature. The volume of watershall be not less than 10 L, and the specimen immersed to adepth of not less than 2.5 cm.4.3 Testing MachineFor elongating the briquet of asphaltmaterial, any apparatus may be used that is so construct

    18、ed thatthe specimen will be continuously immersed in water, whilethe two clips are pulled apart at a uniform speed, as specified,without undue vibration. A variation of 65 % is permissible.The water in the tank of the testing machine shall cover thespecimen both above and below it by at least 2.5 cm

    19、 and shallbe maintained within 60.5C 0.9F of the test temperature.The testing machine shall incorporate a means by which theelongation can be measured in centimetres. (See Note 2.)4.4 ThermometerA thermometer for monitoring the tem-perature of the water bath. The thermometer shall be one of thefollo

    20、wing:4.4.1 A liquid-in-glass thermometer of suitable range withsubdivisions and maximum scale error of 0.1C 0.2F whichconforms to the requirements of Specification E1. The ther-mometer shall be standardized in accordance with one of themethods in Test Method E77.4.4.2 A liquid-in-glass thermometer o

    21、f suitable range withsubdivisions and maximum scale error of 0.1C 0.2F whichconforms to the requirements of Specification E2251. Thethermometer shall be standardized in accordance with one ofthe methods in Test Method E77.4.4.3 Aplatinum resistance thermometer (PRT) with a probewhich conforms to the

    22、 requirements of Specification E1137/E1137M. The PRT shall have a 3- or 4-wire configuration andthe overall sheath length shall be at least 50 mm 2 in. greaterthan the immersion depth. The PRT system (probe and readout)shall be standardized in accordance with Test Methods E644.Corrections shall be a

    23、pplied to ensure measurements within0.1C 0.2F.4.4.4 A metal-sheathed thermistor with a sensor substan-tially similar in construction to the PRT probe described in4.4.3. The thermistor system (sensor and readout) shall bestandardized in accordance with Test Methods E644. Correc-tions shall be applied

    24、 to ensure measurements within 0.1C0.2F.4.5 ScissorsAny type of conventional scissors capable ofcutting the bituminous material at the test temperature.4.6 OvenAn oven capable of maintaining 135 6 5C 2756 10F.4.7 Sieves300-m No. 50 and 850-m No. 20 sieves,75 mm 3 in. in diameter, in accordance with

    25、SpecificationE11.4.8 Release AgentA mixture such as glycerin withDextrin, talc or Kaolin (china clay) or 1 g Versamid Resin per100 g castor oil (not generic mineral oil) used to coat thebottom and sides of the mold to prevent the specimen fromsticking to the mold. Other materials may be used for thi

Sample Preparation5.1 Emulsified Asphalt ResidueIf the sample is a residualproduct recovered from emulsified asphalt by means of themethods described in Test Methods D6934, D6997, D7403,orPractice D7497, stir the heated resid

    30、ue and immediately pourportions of the residue into suitable molds for making therequired tests. If it is suspected there is foreign matter in theresidue, pour the material through a 300 m No. 50 sieve thathas been preheated at 135 6 5C 275 6 10F prior to pouringinto the test molds. (See Note 4.)5.2

    31、 Unaged SampleIf the sample is an asphalt binder,carefully heat the sample in a covered container to preventlocal overheating until it has become sufficiently fluid to pour.Use an oven set at 135 6 5C 275 6 10F for sample heating.If it is suspected that the sample contains foreign matter, strainthe

    32、melted sample through a 300 m No. 50 sieve that hasbeen preheated at 135 6 5C 275 6 10F. (See Note 5.)5.3 Aged SampleIf the sample is a conditioned residueobtained from Test Method D1754 or D2872, combine theresidue into a single container, cover, and heat in an oven set at135 6 5C 275 6 10F. If it

    33、is suspected that the samplecontains foreign matter, strain the melted sample through a300-m No. 50 sieve that has been preheated at 135 6 5C275 6 10F. (See Note 5.)NOTE 4In the case of higher viscosity emulsified asphalt residues orresidues from lower temperature distillations that will not pass a

    34、300-m(No. 50) sieve, an 850-m (No. 20) sieve may be used.NOTE 5In those cases where the samples are not sufficiently fluid topour at 135C 275F, higher temperatures may be used. In the case ofhigher viscosity materials that will not pass a 300 m No. 50 sieve, an850 m No. 20 sieve may be used.6. Proce

    35、dure6.1 Assemble the mold on the brass plate. Thoroughly coatthe surface of the plate and the interior surfaces of the sides ofthe mold, a and a, with a thin layer of release agent to preventthe test material from sticking. The plate upon which the moldshall be placed shall be perfectly flat and lev

    36、el so that thebottom surface of the mold will be in contact throughout. Aftersample preparation as described in Section 5, thoroughly stirthe sample and pour into the mold. In filling the mold, take carenot to disarrange the pieces of the mold, thus distorting theshape. In filling, take care to pour

    37、 and place material in astream back and forth from end to end until the mold is morethan level full. Allow the filled mold to cool to room tempera-ture for 35 6 5 min. Then place in the water bath at the testtemperature for 30 6 5 min. Remove the test specimens fromthe water bath and immediately tri

    38、m the excess material with ahot trimming tool to make the molds just level full. (See Note6.)6.2 Keeping Specimens at Standard TemperaturePlace thetrimmed specimen and mold in the water bath at the specifiedtest temperature for 90 6 5 min prior to testing. Remove thespecimen from the plate by a shea

    39、ring action between speci-men and plate, avoiding any bending of the test specimen.Remove the side pieces a and a being careful not to distort orfracture the specimen. Attach the specimen to the testingmachine and immediately test the specimen.6.3 Testing, Procedure AAttach the rings at each end oft

    40、he clips to the pins or hooks in the testing machine and pull thetwo clips apart at a uniform speed to an elongation of 10 60.25 cm unless otherwise specified. Stop the elongation andimmediately cut the test specimen into two halves at themidpoint using the scissors. Allow the specimen to remain int

    41、he testing machine in an undisturbed condition at the specifiedtemperature for a period of 60 min. After the 60-min timeperiod, carefully move the traveling carriage back to a positionwhere the ends of the specimens just touch. If the specimenends have sagged, carefully lift them to their original l

    42、evelprior to adjusting the ends to touch. Record the total length ofthe specimen with the severed ends just touching each other.6.4 Testing, Procedure BAttach the rings at each end ofthe clips to the pins or hooks in the testing machine and pull thetwo clips apart at a uniform speed to an elongation

    43、 of 20 60.25 cm. Stop the elongation and maintain the specimen in thisposition for 5 min. Then cut the test specimen into two halvesat the midpoint using the scissors. Allow the specimen toremain in the testing machine in an undisturbed condition at thespecified temperature for a period of 60 min. A

    44、fter the 60-mintime period, carefully move the traveling carriage back to aposition where the ends of the specimens just touch. If thespecimen ends have sagged, carefully lift them to their originallevel prior to adjusting the ends to touch. Record the totallength of the specimen with the severed en

    45、ds just touching eachother.6.5 If the asphalt material comes in contact with the surfaceof the water or the bottom of the bath, the test shall not beconsidered normal. Adjust the specific gravity of the bath bythe addition of either methyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, orsodium chloride so that the asph

    46、alt material neither comes tothe surface of the water, nor touches the bottom of the bath atany time during the test, and rerun the test. If the samplefractures before reaching the specified elongation, the test shallnot be considered normal.NOTE 6Mixing of clips and sides from different manufacture

    47、rs mayresult in sample dimensions other than specified. Measure the width at thecross section of the assembled mold and compare to Fig. 1.7.     49、astic recovery as being unobtainable under the conditions ofthe test.7.3 It is suggested that a form sheet as shown in Fig. 2 beused to record the specific test conditions and results.7.3.1 Record the sample thermal history handlinginformation, such as distillation temperature (if applicable), thepouring temperature, and whether or not the sample has beenreheated, as shown in Fig. 2.8.
