Scope1.1 This test method covers a laboratory procedure for t

Summary of Test Method3.1 The test brushes are washed prior to painting to removeany residual finishes from the manu

    7、facturer, broken in, andthen dipped into the test paint for a specified period, allowed todrain and the excess removed by brushing out on paper. Aftera specified drying period, the brushes are cleaned and evalu-ated for the presence of residual paint on the filaments.4. Significance and Use4.1 The f

    8、inal appearance of a paint brush after it has beenused and cleaned is related to the ability of the brush to performconsistently upon repeated use. This test method offers asubjective visual criteria that provides a rank order ofcleanability of the filaments of a brush after use.5. Apparatus5.1 Test

    9、 Brushes, up to 100-mm (4-in.) sizes.5.2 Weight-per-Density Cup or pycnometer.5.3 Balance, capable of weighing to an accuracy of 0.1 g.5.4 Stopwatch.6. Materials6.1 Test Panels, with a sealed surface, having 1000cm2(1.076 ft2) of test area3for 50-mm (2-in.) brushes.6.2 Laminated Fiber Board, (upson

    10、board) 610 by 305 mm(24 by 12 in.) with at least one smooth side for 75-mm (3-in.)and 100-mm (4-in.) size brushes.6.3 Latex-Base Primer.46.4 Specified Test Paint.6.5 Abrasive Grit Soap.56.6 Kraft or Brown Wrapping Paper, unsealed, 200 by 460mm (8 by 18 in.).NOTE 1The choice of the color of the test

Alight colored paint is preferable for dark filament-containing brushes andconversely, a dark colored paint is preferable for brushes containinglight-colored filaments. Latex interior flat paints are p

    12、referred becausethey dry faster than gloss or semigloss paints.7. Sampling and Conditioning7.1 Sampling of test paint to be used in this test methodshall be in accordance with Practice D 3925.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paintand Related Coatings, Materials, a

    13、nd Applications and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee D01.61 on Paint Application Tools.Current edition approved June 1, 2009. Published June 2009. Originallyapproved in 1996.     17、ns as outlined in 7.2. Do not change operators during therunning of a series of tests, since this may invalidate any rankorders.8. Procedure8.1 Determine the weight per gallon of the test paint inaccordance with procedures outlined in Test Method D 1475.8.2 Apply the latex primer to the entire smoot

    18、h side of theupson board panels so as to coat it uniformly at a spreading rateof about 11 m2/L (450 ft2/gal).8.3 Air dry at least 18 h under standard conditions asoutlined in Specification D 3924.8.4 Rinse brush with luke-warm running tap water (90 to110F) for 30 6 2 s while turning brush over two t

    19、imes.Immediately wash brush using warm water and abrasive soapfor 40 6 2 s. Gently rub brush in a circular motion on the barof soap to make a lather.8.5 Immediately rinse brush with luke-warm running tapwater for 30 s to remove excess soap. Spin brush handle for 106 1 s between palms of hands to rem

    20、ove excess water.NOTE 2New brushes often contain surface treatments or finishes thatmay temporarily influence the cleanability. The purpose of this step is toremove such materials.8.6 Break in test brush following procedures as outlined inPractice D 5068. Secure panels to flat horizontal surface usi

    21、ngcommercial masking tape.8.7 After breaking in the brush, immediately apply the testpaint to the panel at a spreading rate of 400 6 25 ft2/gal or ata spreading rate agreed upon between the purchaser andseller.NOTE 3The amount of paint needed to be applied to the test panel toattain 400 6 25 ft2/gal

    22、 can be calculated using the following equation:Grams needed 5454 3 weight/gallon lbs! 3 Area ft2!400 6 25 ft2/gal(1)8.8 When applying the test paint, always start in the middleof the test panel and spread paint out. This leaves the excesspaint in the middle where it is easier to spread uniformly ov

    23、erthe entire panel.8.9 From the middle of the test panel, paint first to one edge,then reverse, painting to the opposite edge. Make sure that thenext stroke in each direction is a little above the first, and thefollowing one a little below (see Practice D 5068).8.10 Finish the area with light pressu

    24、re by brushing in aperpendicular direction to the initial application utilizing the tipof the brush. Make sure that total application time for the testpanel is 30 to 35 s.8.11 After preparing brush out, dip brush into the paint tothe specified depth for its size as shown in Practice D 5068 for10 s.

    25、Remove brush and maintain in a vertical position for 306 2 s and allow excess paint to drain. Make four passes witheach test brush on the kraft paper (6.6). Each pass shall consistof painting over the length of the kraft paper to within 25 mm(1 in.) of the edge.8.12 Repeat 8.11 and make four more ad

    26、ditional passes toremove excess paint from the brush, using a fresh sheet of kraftpaper each time. Suspend the brush in a vertical position for 306 1 min in the standard environment as outlined in Specifica-tion D 3924.8.13 Rinse brush with luke-warm running tap water 32 to43C (90 to 110F) for 30 6

    27、2 s while turning brush over twotimes. Immediately wash brush using warm water and abrasivesoap for 40 6 2 s. Gently rub brush in a circular motion on thebar of soap to make a lather.8.14 Immediately rinse brush with luke-warm running tapwater for 30 s to remove excess soap. Spin brush handle for 10

    28、6 1 s between palms of hands to remove excess water. Allowbrush to hang in a vertical position (see 8.12) and dry overnightat ambient conditions.8.15 Visually examine filaments of brush and rank for thepresence of paint. Spread the filaments apart and inspect themthoroughly.8.16 Repeat the procedure

    29、 two more times on additional likebrushes.8.17 Rank each set of three brushes from 1 (best or cleanest)to n (poorest cleaning ability), where n is the total number ofbrushes in the series.9. Report9.1 Report the following information:9.1.1 Report the rank order of each test brush set,9.1.2 Report ty

    30、pe of paint, applied spreading rate, and anyidentification marks on the brush used in the test, and9.1.3 Any deviations from the recommended procedure.10.
