    17、protect the fiber fromphysical damage and provide mechanical protection.3.2.2 composite buffer, npolymeric material(s) surround-ing the optical fiber so that the inner layer is in intimate contactwith the fiber cladding or coating with a tightly extruded buffermaterial overall.3.2.3 loose tube(s), n

    18、a buffer material that surrounds theoptical fiber(s) so that it forms a tube or channel whose insidedimension is greater than the fibers outside diameter (orcombined diameters).3.2.3.1 DiscussionWhen required, the space between thefiber(s) and the inside of the tube may be filled with a suitablefill
