Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope*1.1 This classification system covers materials made fromonly virgin ABS p

    3、olymers and blends of ABS polymerssuitable for use in the extrusion of pipe and molding of fittings.1.2 The requirements of this classification system are appli-cable only to the ABS polymers and blends of ABS polymersas classified and do not address the requirements of the finishedpipe or fittings.

    4、 The applicable ASTM standard specificationfor pipe or fittings shall be consulted for their requirements.1.3 This classification system excludes ABS polymers andblends of ABS polymers made from reprocessed, regrind,reclaimed, or recycled materials. ABS rework, generated in-house by the original pla

    5、stic manufacturer, may be used by thatoriginal manufacturer, provided the ABS product shippedmeets the physical and mechanical properties required by itscallout in Table 1.1.4 This classification system and subsequent line callout(specification) provides a means for describing ABS materialsused in t

    6、he manufacture of pipe and fittings. It is not intendedfor the selection of materials. Material selection shall be madeby those having expertise in the plastics field after carefulconsideration of the design and the performance required of thepart, the environment to which it will be exposed, the fa

    7、brica-tion process to be employed, the inherent properties of thematerial other than those covered by this classification system,and the economics.1.5 This classification system and subsequent line callout(specification) provides for the classification of ABS polymersand blends of ABS polymers into

    8、groups based on fiveproperties: Izod impact strength at room temperature, Izodimpact strength at low temperature, deflection temperatureunder load, tensile stress at yield point, and modulus ofelasticity in tension. The properties included are those requiredto identify the ABS material by the cell c

    9、lassifications.NOTE 1Other requirements necessary to identify particular character-istics of ABS polymers and blends of ABS polymers will be added as testmethods become available or the need is identified.NOTE 2Due to pipe and fitting standards requirements a separatestandard is planned for recycled

Theabbreviation for acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene plastic is ABS.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 blenda homogenous mixture of polymers preparedby me

    19、lt compounding or physical combination.3.2.2 lota unit of manufacture; can consist of a blend oftwo or more production runs or batches of material.3.2.3 natural materiala polymer as it exists when initiallymade by the original producer without addition of colorants.3.2.4 reprocessed plastica thermop

    20、lastic prepared fromusually melt-processed scrap or reject parts by a plasticsprocessor or from purchased nonstandard or nonuniform virginmaterial.3.2.5 original plastic manufacturera company that pro-duces ABS resin by polymerization of monomers or com-pounding of virgin styrene-acrylonitrile plast

    21、ic (SAN) andvirgin polybutadiene rubber, which meets the requirements ofthis classification system.4. Classification4.1 ABS polymers and blends of ABS polymers shall beclassified in accordance with Table 1. Each ABS polymer andblend of ABS polymers is given a five-digit cell classificationrepresenti

    22、ng the physical properties in the order in which theyare listed in Table 1.NOTE 4The manner in which selected materials are identified by thisclassification system is illustrated by an ABS Class 44222 material havingthe following requirements:4.2 Although the values listed are necessary to include t

    23、herange of properties available in existing materials, users shallnot infer that every possible combination of the propertiesexists or can be obtained.4.3 Mechanical properties of pigmented or colored materi-als can differ from the mechanical properties of naturalmaterial, depending on the choice of

    24、 colorants and the concen-tration. The main property affected is ductility, as illustrated bya reduction in Izod impact strength and tensile elongationvalues. ABS polymers and blends of ABS polymers containingcolorants or color concentrates, or both, shall meet the mini-mum ABS material cell classif

    25、ication from Table 1 for the pipeand fitting products specified.5. Materials and Manufacture5.1 The ABS material shall be produced by polymerizationof the monomers, acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, or theirclosely related chemical derivatives, or from a blend of ABSpolymers from those monomers

The blend of ABS polymerscan be intimately mixed by melt compounding, or it can be ahomogenous physical mixture of discrete ABS polymers.5.2 The ABS polymer and each ABS polymer component ofa blend shall be uniform in physical properties, as defined by acell classification, and shall be of composi

The color of the ABS plastic material with addedcolorants shall be as required in the product specification.6. Chemical Com

    31、position6.1 The ABS material shall contain a minimum of 15 %acrylonitrile, 6 % butadiene, and 15 % styrene, or 15 % of acombination of styrene and substituted styrene. Additive(s)necessary for compounding, impact modification, and coloringare allowed. The final composition of the ABS material shallm

    32、eet the minimum ABS cell class from Table 1 for the productspecified.7. Suffix Requirements7.1 When requirements are needed that supersede or supple-ment the property table or cell table requirements, they shall bespecified through the use of suffixes. In general, the first suffixletter indicates th

    33、e special requirement needed and the secondletter indicates the condition or test method, or both, with athree-digit number indicating the specific requirement. Suffixesthat are permitted are listed in the Suffix Symbols andRequirements table of Classification System D4000.8. Basic Requirements8.1 B

    34、asic requirements from Table 1 as they apply arealways in effect unless these requirements are superseded byspecific suffix requirements, which always take precedence.9. Sampling9.1 Sampling shall be statistically adequate to satisfy therequirements of 14.3.10. Number of Tests and Retests10.1 One se

    35、t of specimens as prescribed in the test methodsshall be considered sufficient for each lot. The average resultfor the specimens tested shall meet the requirements of Table 1when tested in accordance with the test methods listed inSection 13.10.2 RetestIf the results of any test(s) do not meet there

    36、quirements of this classification system, the test(s) shall beconducted again in accordance with an agreement between thepurchaser and the seller. There shall be no agreement to lowerthe minimum requirement of the specification, or modify a testmethod, or change the specification limits. In retestin

    37、g, theproduct requirements of this classification system shall befollowed. If, upon retest, failure occurs, the quantity of productrepresented by the test(s) shall be rejected.11. Specimen Preparation11.1 The test specimens shall be injection molded in accor-dance with Practice D3641 with melt tempe

    38、rature 215 6 15Cand mold temperature 40 6 15C. Average injection velocityshall be 200 6 100 mm/s as defined by the following formula:AIV 5pd2Va/4ns (1)where:AIV = average injection velocity, mm/s,d = screw diameter, mm,Va= screw advance speed, mm/s,n = number of mold cavities, ands = cross-sectional

    39、 area of the test specimen, mm2.Other molding conditions shall be as specified by themanufacturer. Test specimens shall be molded in one piece andshall not be a composite of thinner sections.12. Conditioning12.1 Anneal the molded test specimen for use with TestMethod D648 for a minimum of 16 h, but

    40、not more than 24 hat 85C for materials in Cells 1 through 3, and at 95C formaterials in Cells 4 and 5. Condition all other molded testspecimens in accordance with Procedure A of Practice D618,prior to testing.12.2 Test ConditionsConduct tests in the standard labora-tory atmosphere of 23 6 2C and 50

    41、6 10 % relative humidity,unless otherwise specified in Table 1.13. Test Methods13.1 All specimens shall be measured using techniques inTest Method D5947, where applicable.13.2 Impact TestingDetermine the impact strength of thematerial in accordance with the Cantilever Beam (Izod-Type)Test of Test Me

    42、thods D256, employing a 3.18 6 0.38-mm(0.125 6 0.015-in.) thick specimen.13.3 Deflection Temperature Under Load Determine thedeflection temperature under load, in accordance with TestMethod D648, employing a 3.18 by 12.7 by 127-mm (18 by12by 5-in.) specimen and a load of 1.82 MPa (264 psi).13.4 Tens

    43、ile Stress at Yield Point Determine the tensilestress at yield in accordance with Test Method D638, employ-ing a 3.2-mm (18-in.) thick Type I specimen. Test the specimenat a speed of 5.1 to 6.4 mm (0.20 to 0.25 in.)/min.NOTE 5Most ABS plastics exhibit a true yield point. Tensile stress atyield gener

    44、ally is greater than tensile stress (nominal) at break.13.5 Modulus of Elasticity in Tension Determine themodulus of elasticity in tension in accordance with TestMethod D638, employing the same specimen size and testspeed as for tensile stress indicated in 13.4.13.6 Specific GravityDetermine the spe

    45、cific gravity inaccordance with Test Method D792.14. Certification and Inspection14.1 Certification and inspection of the material suppliedunder this classification system shall be for conformance to therequirements specified herein.14.2 Lot-acceptance inspection shall be the basis on whichacceptanc

    46、e or rejection of the lot is made. The lot-acceptanceinspection shall consist of those tests listed in Table 1.14.3 Certification shall be that the material was manufac-tured, sampled, tested, and inspected in accordance with thisclassification system, and that the average values for the lotmeet the

    47、 requirements of the specification (line callout).14.4 A report of test results shall be furnished when re-quested. The report shall consist of results of the lot-acceptanceinspection for the shipment.15. Packaging and Package Marking15.1 For packing, packaging, and marking, the provisions ofPractic
