Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the weightof wax that is present in a specimen of wax-treated corrugatedpaperbo

The test method is applicable to specimens thathave been waxed by either impregnation (saturation) opera-tions or coating operations, or combinations of such operations.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1

    4、.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use. For precautiona

Terminology2.1 Definitions:2.1.1 weight of applied wax coatingthe weight of waxthat has been applied to the corrugated board as a coating,expressed as weight per unit area, usually grams of coating persquare metre or pounds of coating per thousand square feet ofboard

    6、covered.NOTE 1When it is known that a wax-coated specimen has noimpregnating wax present, this extraction procedure is normally calcu-lated to express the data as “weight of applied wax coating.”2.1.2 weight percent wax contentthe weight percent ofwax present in and on corrugated board relative to t

    7、he weightof unwaxed board substrate measured at 23C (73F) and 50 %relative humidity.3. Summary of Test Method3.1 The total quantity of wax associated with the corrugatedboard specimen is determined by extracting the wax from theboard and evaporating the extract to dryness.4. Significance and Use4.1

    8、Many of the functional properties of wax-treated corru-gated paperboard and cartons are dependent on the amount ofwax present.4.2 In the case of wax-saturated, or wax-impregnated,paperboard the principal concern is with the weight of waxused relative to the weight of paperboard present, that is, the

    9、weight percent content or pickup. In some applications thesaturating wax may be deposited in the three elements of thecorrugated board in such a way as to individually control theamount in each element, that is, the medium and the twofacings.4.3 In the case of wax-coated corrugated paperboard thepri

    10、ncipal concern is the weight of wax on the board surface perunit area. The functional values of the wax coating as a barrieror a decorative coating are dependent, in part, on the amount ofwax in the continuous surface layer, relative to the areacovered. The weight of coating relative to the weight o

    11、fsubstrate is not usually a concern with regard to productquality.5. Apparatus5.1 Sample Trimming EquipmentA suitable trimmingboard or template arrangement equipped with a razor edgeknife for even cutting of specimens so that they have parallelsides and are of the right size. (A guillotine-type pape

    12、r cutter isnot recommended.)5.2 Measuring Rule, steel-edged, rule for measuring the sizeof specimen to within 0.5 mm.5.3 Beakers, 1000-cm3, Griffin-type.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D02 onPetroleum Products and Lubricants and is the direct responsibility of Subcommit

The solvent used should be residue-free, and shouldbe checked for a residue upon evaporation before using.5.5 Steel Screen,3325-mesh, approximately 150 mm indiameter, to fit into a funnel.5.6 Glass Funnel, approximately 100 mm in diameter.5.7 Watch Glasses.5.8 Steam B

Test Specimen6.1 Condition all boards at 23C (73F) and 50 % relativehumidity for a minimum of 48 h before beginning the testprocedure.6.2 From each sample unit, that is, each finished cartonb

    17、lank or paperboard sheet, cut representative specimens free ofobvious defects. Each specimen should measure 100 by 100mm, cut to the nearest 0.5 mm. Two specimens are requiredfrom each sample unit to be tested.NOTE 2The operator may be required to increase the replication andtreatment of specimens t

    18、o obtain a better estimate of “average” waxcontent, (1) if the waxing is at an extremely low content, or (2) if the waxcontent shows obvious wide variations in distribution over the board area.NOTE 3Optionally, specimens of other dimensions may be used ifrequired by sampling limitations. In such cas

    19、es, calculations need to beappropriately adjusted.7. Procedure7.1 Weigh the two board specimens together to the nearest1 mg and record the combined weight of sample in grams. Cuteach specimen into small pieces, each measuring about 25 mmsquare, being careful to retain all of the trimmings, and being

    20、careful that no surface wax is lost during handling of thespecimens. Place all pieces in a 1000-cm3beaker.7.2 To the cut pieces, add 250 cm3of solvent 1,1,1-trichloroethane (WarningMay cause irritation. Avoid con-tact with the eyes, skin, and clothing. Use only with adequateventilation. Avoid prolon

    21、ged breathing of vapor or spray mist.Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. Do not takeinternally.) and cover the beaker with a watch glass. Heat to75C (167F) then maintain at 75C for1honasteam bath orhot plate in a hood. Pour off the solvent, passing it through thestainless steel screen in

    22、the funnel to remove fibers, and collectthe solvent in a clean, tared 1000-cm3beaker. Rinse theextraction beaker and the extracted paper chips with 50 cm3ofhot solvent, filter this rinsing, and add it to the solvent in thetared beaker.7.3 Repeat the solvent extraction using 250 cm3of freshsolvent, b

    23、oiling for 1 h and rinsing with 30 cm3of hot solvent.Combine all extracts and rinsings in the same tared beaker.7.4 Evaporate the combined solvent extracts on a steam bathor, optionally, overnight in the air current of a hood. Evapora-tion may be hastened by use of a stream of nitrogen. For thefinal

    24、 stages of evaporation, place the beaker on a hot plate atabout 300F to completely dissipate solvent vapors or mois-ture. Confirm that evaporation is complete when no solventodor can be detected. Cool and reweigh the tared beaker.Record the weight of wax extracted, to the nearest 1 mg.NOTE 4If it is

    25、 not possible to tare the 1000-cm3beaker because ofspace limitations on the analytical balance, evaporate most of the solventin the 1000-cm3beaker and then quantitatively transfer the residue withrinsings to a smaller tared beaker, and continue the evaporation to drynessas described in 7.4.NOTE 5Use

    26、 of a Soxhlet extraction technique may result in improvedprecision.8.
