    5、x containing amedium viscosity grade of tar and a less densely gradedaggregate designed to be laid either shortly after mixing orwhen the mixture is at or near ambient temperature.3.1.2.2 hot lay tar concretea plant mix containing a highviscosity grade of tar and a densely graded mineral aggregate,d

    6、esigned to be laid at or near the elevated temperature ofmixing.3.1.2.3 sand mixa plant mix containing sand aggregateand a high-viscosity grade of tar designed to be laid immedi-ately.3.1.2.4 soil mixa plant mix containing soil aggregate anda low-to-medium viscosity grade of bituminous material,usua

    7、lly designed to be stockpiled, then laid following a periodof seasoning.3.1.3 patch mixa mixture of bituminous material andmineral aggregate for patching holes, depressions, and dis-tressed areas in existing pavements. These mixes are suitablefor use in relatively small areas, applied at ambient tem

    8、pera-ture, using hand-laying and hand-compaction techniques.These mixes may be designed for immediate use or forstock-piling prior to use.3.1.4 sand aggregatenon-plastic mineral aggregate, es-sentially all passing the 4.75-mm sieve, and containing nomore than a minor percentage passing the 75-m siev

Significance and Use4.1 This practice provides information on the recommendeduses and application temperatures for the various grades ofroad tar used in the construction and maintenance of pave-ments.5. Recommended Uses5.1 The recommendations shown in Table 1 are for use onlyas a guide when usi

    10、ng tar for pavement construction andmaintenance. Several grades of tar may be listed in the table forthe same general construction procedure. Selection of a par-ticular grade will depend upon local practice, equipmentavailability, traffic, and environmental conditions applicable tothe specific proje

    11、ct being considered.6. Recommended Application Temperatures6.1 The temperature ranges listed in Table 1 for the severalroad tar grades show the minimum and maximum temperaturesthat will provide proper viscosity for application. In general,the lower application temperatures may be used when highertem

    12、peratures of aggregate and pavement surfaces prevail.Higher application temperatures are employed when the tar isto be mixed, or where dust or moisture films are encountered.It is good practice to apply tar at the lowest temperature thatwill provide the required spray pattern, viscosity, adhesion, a
