2、 of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1. Scope*1.1 This test method covers the det

The Model No. 934-1 and Model No.935 Barcol Impressors are designated for use with plastics.Within the range of hardness measured by these Impressors theModel No. 934-1 is used for measuring harder materials andthe Model No. 935 is used f

Significance and Use5.1 The Barcol Impressor is portable and therefore suitablefor testing the hardness of fabricated parts and individual testspecimens for production control purposes.5.2 Before proceeding with this test method, reference shallbe made to the specifi

Preparation and Operation of Apparatus8.1 The preparation and operation of Models 934-1 and 935are identical. Place th

If softer supportingsurfaces are used, a false low instrument reading may occur.8.2 Set the point sleeve on the surface to be tested. Set thelegs on th

Apply a uniform downward force quickly, byhand, increasing the force on the case until the dial indicationreaches

19、a maximum (Note 3). Take care to avoid sliding orscraping while the indentor is in contact with the surface beingtested. Record the maximum reading.NOTE 2It is recommended that measurements be made with theModel 934-1 Impressor when values above 90 are obtained with theModel 935 Impressor and that m

Values below 10 using the Model 935 Impressor areinexact and should not be reported.NOTE 3Drift in readings from the maximum occurs in some materialsand can be nonlinear with time

21、.9. Calibration9.1 With the plunger upper guide backed out until it justengages the spring, place the Impressor on a glass surface andpress down until the point is forced all the way back into thelower plunger guide. The indicator should now read 100. If itdoes not, loosen the lock-nut and turn the

22、lower plunger guidein or out to obtain a 100 reading. Next, read the “hard”aluminum alloy disk supplied by the manufacturer of theImpressor and, if necessary, adjust so that the reading is withinthe range marked on the disk. Then do the same with the “soft”disk. If these readings cannot be obtained,

28、gs12.1 Application of the Barcol Impressor to reinforcedplastic (nonhomogeneous) materials will produce greater varia-tion in hardness readings than on nonreinforced (homoge-neous) materials. This greater variation is mainly caused by thedifference in hardness between resin and filler materials inco

29、ntact with the small diameter indentor. There is less variationin hardness readings on harder materials in the range of 50Barcol and higher and considerably more variation in thereadings of softer materials. On homogeneous materials, fivereadings are needed to maintain a variance-of-average of 0.28a

30、t a 60 Barcol reading; for the same variance-of-average at 30Barcol, eight readings are needed. On reinforced plastics, inorder to maintain a variance-of-average of 0.78 at 60 Barcol, ten readings are needed; and 29 readings are needed for thesame variance at the 30 Barcol level (Table 1).NOTE 5These

31、 findings were obtained with a round robin conducted ina workshop with all participants present. Eight plastic materials ofdifferent hardness were evaluated with six different Barcol (934-1)Impressors.13.
