United States15.2 Grading:5.2.1 The coarse aggregate grading shall conform to therequirements of Classification D448 for the size numberdesignated, or to another grading as stated in the order (seeNote 2).NOTE 2The

、 coarse aggregate grading to be furnished is dependentupon the desired composition of the paving mixture, and whether thegrading to be used in the mixture is achieved with or without blending.Other coarse aggregate gradings may be used provided that the combinedaggregate and filler, when used, will

、produce a paving mixture thatprovides the desired characteristics.5.2.2 The size to be used is dependent upon the desiredcomposition of the paving mixture, and the required size orsizes either before or after blending as specified.5.3 Density:5.3.1 SlagAir-cooled blast-furnace-slag coarse aggregate,

、when tested in size No. 57 or No. 8, shall have a minimumdensity of 1120 kg/m370 lb/ft3 as determined in accordancewith Test Method C29/C29M, rodding procedure.5.3.2 Expanded Shale, Expanded Clay, Expanded SlateThe coarse aggregate, when tested in size No. 57 or No. 8, shallhave a minimum density of

、 500 kg/m331 lb/ft3 as determinedin accordance with Test Method C29/C29M, shoveling proce-dure.5.4 Crushed Pieces in AggregateOrders for materialsunder this specification shall state the appropriate requirementsfor crushed pieces, Test Method D5821.5.4.1 Conventional MixturesNot less than 40 %, by m

、, by mass, two or more fractured faces.NOTE 3Attention is called to the distinction between conventional(dense mixtures or open mixtures) and open-graded friction coursemixtures in Specification D3515.NOTE 4Some sources of aggregate contain angular particles that willperform similarly to a mechanica

、lly crushed particle. Where laboratorytests or service records indicate this to be true, such angular particles maybe considered as crushed.5.5 Polishing CharacteristicsThe coarse aggregates, orthe coarsest fraction of the aggregate for use in surface coursemixtures, shall be of a type known to poss

、ess adequateresistance to the polishing action of the anticipated traffic. (seeNote 5)NOTE 5No standardASTM method has been recognized to be capableof defining adequate resistance to the polishing action of specific trafficconditions. Test Method D3319 has been found useful in evaluating therelative

、 polish resistance between samples of different aggregates ormixtures containing different aggregates.5.6 SoundnessThe coarse aggregate, when subjected tofive cycles of the soundness test, shall have a weighted loss notgreater than 12 % when sodium sulfate is used or 18 % whenmagnesium sulfate is us

、ed. (see Note 6). If the salt is notdesignated by the purchaser, the aggregate will be acceptable ifit meets the indicated limit for the salt used.5.7 DegradationThe aggregate (with the exception ofcrushed blast-furnace slag) when subjected to testing in accor-dance with Test Method C131 shall have

、a loss not greater than40 % for surface courses or 50 % for base courses (see Note 6).NOTE 6Coarse aggregate (other than crushed hydraulic-cement con-crete) failing to meet the requirements of 5.6 or 5.7, may be considered foruse provided that (a) similar aggregates from the same source or geologicf

、ormation have been shown by experience to result in satisfactorypavements and (b) the results of other tests suggest that the desiredperformance can be obtained. Aggregate from a new source (includingcrushed hydraulic-cement concrete) that fails the requirements of 5.6 or5.7 and for which no experie

、nce exists, may be considered provided theresults of the other tests suggest that the desired performance can beobtained. Crushed hydraulic-cement concrete may chemically react withNa2SO4or MgSO4, giving higher results which may not reflect theaggregates freeze-thaw properties. Additional tests may
