Summary of Practice3.1 Several procedures for prepa

Significance and Use4.1 The procedures described in this practice are designed toprovide steel panels with a uniform and reproducible surfacefor testing of paint, varnish, lacquer, conversion coatings, andrelated products.5
8、. Test Panels5.1 Prepare the test panels from rust and stain-free cold-rolled steel as described in 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, and Table 1. Thepanels shall be made to a size and thickness as agreed uponbetween the purchaser and seller. Edges shall be smooth andcorners rounded. The steel may have been coated at
9、the millwith a suitable rust preventive compound for protection duringshipment and storage. However, long-term steel storage withoil on the surface may cause an oil/steel reaction known as oilstain. Since such stains inhibit chemical bonding, the steelselected for panels shall be free of oil stain a
10、nd other visibleprocessing variation caused by pickling or annealing.5.2 Type 1 steel has a matte finish produced by steel millrolls that have been grit blasted. This finish is typical ofcold-rolled steel used for painted surfaces on automobiles, appliances, etc. Such surfaces can be partially charac
11、terized bymeasuring the average peak-to-valley distance and the numberof peaks per unit area. However, conversion coating and paintperformance on such surfaces may vary because of differentoxidation, annealing procedures, and surface conditions.5.3 Type 2 steel panels are flat polished (or “ground”)
12、 afterthe steel has been received from the mill. Flat polishing is amethod of mechanically grinding the surface with abrasivebelts to remove surface contaminants and provide a moreuniform and reproducible surface for testing. Flat-polishedpanels are not representative of the surface on which mostcoa

This smoothfinish is useful for measuring many paint properties such ascolor, gloss, flexibility, or adhesion, where it is desirable tominim

Methods of Preparation6.1 After preparation, the surface of the panel should bewater-break free, which is determined by immersing a repre-sentative panel momentarily in distilled water. The watershould form a continuous unbroken film over the enti

Follow the manufac-turer

Preparation of test panels may consist of one or moresteps of cleaning, rinsing, or conditioning prior to the applica-tion of the conversion coating. Additional rinsing with waterwill usually be required after the conversion coating is app

When the panels attain vapor temperature, condensa-tion of vapor
22、 onto the panels no longer occurs. Prewiping witha clean, lintless cloth saturated with mineral spirits may benecessary, since vapor degreasing generally does not removesolid particulate matter such as dirt, etc. (see Note 1).NOTE 1Other organic solvents or combinations of solvents that willproduce
23、a water-break free surface may be used if agreed upon betweenthe purchaser and the supplier.6.4 Procedure C: Solvent BrushingPower-brush scrub thepanel with mineral spirits (Specification D 235). When allsoluble and loosely adhering soil has been washed off, flushwith clean mineral spirits. Dry at a
24、 temperature of 52 to 93C(125 to 200F) before use or storage (see Note 1).6.5 Procedure D: Solvent WipingUsing clean, lintlesscloth wet with mineral spirits, vigorously rub the panel surfaceuntil all soluble and loosely adhering soil has been removed.Flush with clean solvent. Dry at a temperature of
25、 52 to 93C(125 to 200F) before use or storage (see Note 1).6.6 Procedure E: Alkaline CleaningAqueous alkalinecleaners are available from a number of sources as proprietarycompounds or processes. Clean the panels with an alkalinesolution or cleaner applied by spray or immersion. Brush orwipe in accor

To prevent rust, forcedry immediately after rinsing.7. Protection After Preparation7.1 To prevent rust, wrap panels that are not to be usedimmediately
27、after preparation, in a paper impregnated withdicyclohexylammonium nitrite, or an equivalent volatile cor-rosion inhibitor (VCI), and place in a plastic bag or envelope.7.1.1 Bare steel panels used after prolonged storage in VCIpaper may have a residue of VCI that may affect some kinds oftests. The
28、VCI residue can generally be removed by wiping thepanel several times with a clean, lint-free cloth wetted withwarm distilled water.4Its important to dry the panel thor-oughly immediately after wiping to prevent flash rust. Forcritical tests, the operator can verify the presence and effect ofVCI res
