Since the rod or heavy-walled tubing does not absorbwater, the maintenance of constant humi

、dity during testing isnot important.12. Test Methods12.1 Visual InspectionVisually inspect each of thesamples of PTFE rod or heavy-walled tubing selected inaccordance with Section 9 to verify its compliance with therequirements of this specification. Occasional superficial flawsin PTFE rod or heavy-

、walled tubing should be interpreted asnot affecting the physical and electrical properties; however, ifthere is an appearance of a transverse discontinuity or “pokerchip,” testing for tensile strength and elongation is imperative.12.2 Specific GravityDetermine the specific gravity of therod or heavy

、-walled tubing in accordance with Method A ofTest Methods D 792. Two drops of wetting agent should beadded to the water in order to reduce the surface tension andensure complete wetting of the specimens. Test two specimensrepresentative of the cross section of the rod or heavy-walledtubing and avera

、ge the results.12.2.1 The gradient tube method of Test Method D 1505may be used as an alternate on three specimens.12.3 Tensile Strength and Elongation:12.3.1 Determine the tensile strength and elongation of rodsless than 38.1 mm (112 in.) in diameter in accordance withTest Method D 638 modified as

、described below. Determinethe tensile strength and elongation of rods 38.1 mm or more indiameter in accordance with Specification D 4894 modified asdescribed below. Prepare the microtensile specimens from1.59-mm (116-in.) thick wafers cut from a representativeportion of the rod in a plane 90 to the

、axis. Coincide the centerof the microtensile specimen with the axis of the rod. Test fivespecimens and average the results.12.3.1.1 For rods with diameters less than 38.1 mm (112in.), prepare the test specimens in accordance with Fig. 1.12.3.1.2 For rods with diameters 38.1 mm (112 in.) or over, prep
