Terminology3.1 Definition:3.1.1 relative density, nthe ratio of the density of amaterial at a stated temperature to the density

    6、 of water at thesame stated temperature.4. Significance and Use4.1 The relative density of an engine coolant may be used todetermine the approximate percent glycol, freezing point, andboiling point, provided the glycol type is known.4.2 The relative density of an engine coolant concentratecan be use

    7、d as a production control test.5. Apparatus5.1 HydrometersHydrometers shall be of glass, graduatedin specific gravity range as listed in Table 1, and shall conformto Specification E 100.5.2 Hydrometer CylinderThe hydrometer cylinder inwhich the sample for the relative density test is confined shallb

    8、e made of clear glass and shall be cylindrical in shape. Forconvenience in pouring, it may have a lip on the rim. Theinside diameter of the cylinder shall be at least 25.4 mm (1.0in.) greater than the outside diameter of the hydrometer. Theheight of the cylinder shall be such that the length of thec

    9、olumn of sample it contains is greater by at least 25.4 mm (1.0in.) than the portion of the hydrometer which is immersedbeneath the surface of the sample after a state of equilibriumhas been reached.5.3 ThermometerAn ASTM Gravity Thermometer 12C,having a range from 20 to 120C (or 12F having a range

    10、from5 to 215F) and conforming to Specification E1, or someother suitable non-mercury containing temperature measuringdevice, such as a thermocouple, capable of operating in thesame temperature range and having equal or better accuracy.5.4 Water BathA water bath capable of maintaining asample tempera

    11、ture of 15.5 6 0.3C (60 6 0.5F) during thetest.6. Sampling6.1 Sample the coolant in accordance with Test MethodD 1176, except as specified in this test method.7. Procedure7.1 If the coolant has a small amount of separated upperlayer, remove it before determining the relative density of thelower laye

    12、r. To separate, pour the sample into a 500-mLseparatory funnel, allow to stand for3hatroom temperaturebut not below 20C (68F), and then draw off the lower layer.7.2 If the original coolant is homogeneous, no separationwill be required.7.3 Cool the homogeneous sample or the separated lowerlayer sampl

    13、e to about 14C (57F). Pour the sample into theclean, dry hydrometer cylinder without splashing, so as toreduce to a minimum the formation of air bubbles (see Note 1).1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D15 on EngineCoolants and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D

    17、d carefully lower the hydrometer into the sample toa level two smallest scale divisions below that at which it willfloat and then release the hydrometer. When the hydrometerhas come to rest and floats freely away from the walls of thecylinder and the temperature has reached 15.5 6 0.3C (60 60.5F), r

    18、ead the hydrometer.NOTE 1When handling the sample (that is, mixing, transferring, orstirring) be careful to avoid formation of air bubbles. Remove any airbubbles by touching them with a clean, dry glass rod.7.4 The hydrometer is read in the following ways: If thesample is sufficiently transparent, p

    19、lace the eye slightly belowthe level of the liquid and slowly raise it until the surface of thesample changes from a distorted ellipse to a straight linecutting the hydrometer scale. If the sample is opaque, read thepoint on the hydrometer scale to which the sample rises abovethe main surface of the

    20、 liquid with the eye placed slightlyabove the plane of the surface of the sample. Correct thisreading by an amount equal to the height to which the samplerises on the hydrometer stem above the main liquid surface.This height will vary for different coolants and differenthydrometers, and the correcti

    21、on will depend upon the width ofthe hydrometer scale graduations. Determine the correctionfactor for the hydrometer used by observing the height abovethe main surface of the liquid to which the coolant rises on thehydrometer scale when the hydrometer is immersed in atransparent liquid, such as an et

    22、hylene or propylene glycolsolution, having a surface tension similar to that of the sampleunder test.8. Precision and Bias8.1 Precision:8.1.1 RepeatabilityFor different operators their resultsshould vary not more than 0.0012 from the average value whenthe relative density of the engine coolant conce

    23、ntrate sample isbetween 1.0000 and 1.1300.8.1.2 ReproducibilityFor different apparatus the resultsshould vary not more than 0.0012 from the average value whenthe density or relative density of the engine coolants concen-trate is between 1.0000 and 1.1300.8.2 BiasBias of the procedure in this test me

    24、thod formeasuring density or relative density has not been determinedbecause an accepted reference material has not been deter-mined.9.
