Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers qualitative determination of theacid resistance of ceram

    3、ic decorations on returnable beer andbeverage containers, to assure the necessary durability of thedecoration.1.2 This test provides an indication of performance whenand if the decoration is to be exposed to the acid solutions usedin reclaiming bottles, and it also covers those instances wherethe be

    4、verages themselves have acidic properties.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of t

    5、he user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C 224 Practice for Sampling Glass Containers3. Summary of Test Method3.1 This test method is a qualitative

    6、 method which deter-mines by visual inspection the degree of attack of a nominal10 % hydrochloric acid solution on the ceramic decoration.4. Significance and Use4.1 This test method evaluates the quality and serviceabilityof ceramic decorations on returnable beer and beverage con-tainers.4.2 This te

    7、st method is also suitable for specification accep-tance. Its significance is that bottles with good acid resistancecoatings have longer service life.5. Reagent5.1 Hydrochloric Acid (27 + 73)Dilute 27 volumes ofconcentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl, sp gr 1.19) with 73volumes of distilled water. This

    8、will produce nominal 11.5weight % HCl. The volume of the solution may be varied asneeded.6. Test Specimen6.1 The decorated ware should be representative of the lot,or run, and should be taken in accordance with the principlesstated in Practice C 224.7. Procedure7.1 Pour the HCl (27 + 73) into a beak

    9、er large enough toaccept all of the test specimen and the reference sample. Keepthis solution at room temperature (25 6 5C).7.2 Place the test specimen into the HCl so that approxi-mately one half of the label is immersed, and cover the beaker.7.3 Remove the specimen from the HCl after 20 min. Rinse

    10、with water and dry.7.4 Record the temperature of the HCl at both the beginningand the end of the test period.7.5 Retain a duplicate piece of ware with each decorationunder test, without exposure to HCl as an aid in judging thedegree of chemical attack on the specimens under test.8. Interpretation of

    11、 Results8.1 Judge the degree of the HCl attack on the decoratedsurface by visually comparing the exposed specimen to thenonexposed specimen, if such is available.8.2 Grade the decoration on the test specimen according toone of the following classes:Grade 1No attack apparent.Grade 2Appearance of irid

    12、escence or visible stain on theexposed surface when viewed at a 45 angle but not apparentat angles less than 30.Grade 3A definite stain which does not blur reflectedimages and is visible at angles less than 30.Grade 4Definite stain with a gross color change orstrongly iridescent surface visible at a

    13、ngles less than 30.Grade 5Surface dull or matte with chalking possible.Grade 6Significant removal of enamel with pinholingevident.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C14 on Glassand Glass Products and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee C14.10 onGlass Decoration in

    17、the end of the test period,9.1.3 Grading of the specimens and the reference sample asin 8.2, and9.1.4 Date of test and name of operator conducting test.10. Precision and Bias10.1 No justifiable statement can be made regarding theprecision and bias of this test method since the degree of attackis det

    18、ermined using a subjective grading system.11.
