、evision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers installation procedures forlock-strip gaskets that comply with Specification C 542 and forinfill

、glazing materials in lockstrip gasket glazing applicationsused in building walls which are not more than 15 from avertical plane. The prime performance considerations areweathertightness against air and water infiltration, and struc-tural integrity under wind loads.1.2 The values stated in inch-poun

、d and workmanship standard for the installa-tion of lock-strip gasket glazing systems. See also relatedstandards (Specifications C 542 and C 963, Guide C 964, andTerminology C 717).4. Installation4.1 Inspection of ComponentsBefore installing gaskets, the installer shall check the mounting frames to s

、ee that theyare within specified dimensional tolerances and not out-of-square or plane, and check all gaskets for type, dimensions, anddefects such as misalignment at molded corners and damagedlips. Installation shall not proceed until corrections have beenmade.4.2 Environmental ConditionsMaximum ef

、ficiency andsealing capability of gaskets is achieved in a clean, dry, warmenvironment, with the gasket kept resilient during the entireinstallation process. During cold weather the use of temporaryenclosures around the units to be glazed or paneled willfacilitate temperature control and also aid in

、 keeping opengasket channels clean and dry.4.3 Preparation and Conditioning of GasketsLock-stripgaskets require conditioning prior to installation in order torestore maximum resiliency and remove deformations afterprolonged storage in a coiled or stressed position. Gaskets shallbe unpacked from thei

、r containers and conditioned for 24 h ina temperature not lower than 21.1C (70F) by being placedflat or hung on racks to permit recovery of their originalshapes. Racks shall be free of rough surfaces, projections, sharp edges, and other conditions that could damage thegaskets. When the ambient temper

、ature is 10C (50F) orbelow and a heated space is not available, gaskets shall beheated by other means to remove deformations and provide ahigh degree of flexibility and resiliency. This may be done bywarming them in hot water or heated containers. Gaskets shallnot be heated by being draped over heat

、ed units or placed indirect contact with a flame or fired heating device. Theinstallation of glass, panel, and lock-strip shall be completedwhile the gasket is still warm and pliable and with the gasketchannels clean and dry.4.4 Use of ToolsTo minimize the possibility of damage, sharp or pointed tool

、s or implements such as screwdrivers orputty knives shall not be used on lock-strip gaskets. Suitablegasket installation tools, such as nonmetallic spatulas andengineered lock-strip insertion devices, are available from thegasket manufacturer.4.5 Use of LubricantsIf necessary a lubricant may beappli

、ed to the contact surfaces of the gasket to ease theinstallation and help prevent damage to the gasket, glass, orpanel. The lubricant shall be nonstaining, nontoxic, noncorro-sive, chemically stable, compatible with all contact compo-nents, easily removable from exposed surfaces by dry wiping1This s

To avoid slippage, engage both horizontal and verticalmembers for about 304.8 mm (1 ft) in both directions from thecorners, and work the gasket until the web is snug against headand jambs and the corners are square. Then work the remainderof the gasket onto the supporting frame by starting

Lower the glass or panelonto the blocks, being careful not to displace them. Settingblocks under panels are optional but are required for laminated, insulating,

、 annealed tinted, and reflective glass. The use ofsetting blocks for other types of glass products shall be inaccordance with the glass manufacturers recommendations. Ifnecessary, edge spacers may be installed at this time tomaintain uniform edge clearance and to preclude lateraldisplacement of the

、glass or panel.4.11 Installation of Lock-StripAs soon as the glass andpanels are in place, install the lock-strip so that the assembly issecure and the gasket channel is sealed. Cut lock-strip for thesill to a length approximately 50.8 to 76.2 mm (2 to 3 in.)longer than the sill opening dimension. L

、ubricate the lock-stripand lock-strip cavity. Thread the lock-strip into the eye of theinsertion tool. Start installation of the lock-strip at the sill, trying to keep it under compression instead of tension andleaving an excess of lock-strip at both ends. Repeat thisprocedure for jambs and head. To

、avoid any later creep ordrawback of the lock-strip from the corners, trim the lock-stripends approximately 3.2 to 6.4 mm (18 to14 in.) longer than thelock-strip cavity using garden pruning shears or diagonalcutters, and crowd the lock-strip into place using a nonmetallictool. Either a mitre or squar

、e butt joint is acceptable. Whenmolded lock-strip corners are used, install them first and formbutt joints with the lock-strip in compression between thecorners.4.12 Completing the InstallationTo straighten the sight-line, tap the gasket against the frame using a clean, smoothblock of wood. Push the

、 lock-strip into the cavity with aspatula wherever complete insertion was not accomplished.Wipe off excess lubricant. Inspect and rectify any curled-underlips. Contact of the gasket with the frame and panel or glassshall be continuous and positive against smooth flat surfaces.5. Keywords5.1 elastome
