、、 Speaking Module (10-15 minutes) 1 【正确答案 】 Your studies Im studying marketing at Hong Kong Polytechnic. Actually, I didnt choose it myself. My parents chose it for me. I was quite annoyed at first, but once I began studying marketing, I discovered that I quite liked it. You see, I had my heart set

、on studying psychology, but Ive discovered that marketing involves a lot of psychology. Yes, I think it is. Many students study it, either as a major or a minor. I think that many young people in Hong Kong are interested in business-related subjects, so it should remain popular for some time to come

、. I doubt it. I would like to do a Masters, but in a different field of study in order to learn a variety of things. Photography A little. Im not an avid photographer, but I enjoy taking pictures of friends and of places that I visit. Nowadays, many people have digital cameras or cameras in their mo

、bile phones, so its increasingly common to see people taking photographs. I guess I take, on average, four or five a week, unless I go somewhere special. In that case, I might take twenty or thirty photos. I have a camera on my mobile, but I dont use it much. A few of my friends take pictures very o

、ften much more often than me. Most of all, I like taking pictures of old buildings. I find the architecture interesting. I also like taking pictures of my friends when we go out for a trip together. Its a nice way to remember what happened. I dont mind as long as I look reasonable. My boyfriend has

、a nasty habit of taking pictures of his friends when they get drunk. I wish he wouldnt do that because it embarrasses his friends. Music Certainly. I like dance music best of all. Most of my friends enjoy the same kind of music and so we often go to clubs to listen and dance together. I also like to

、 listen to Western classical music while Im studying. I find it very relaxing and soothing. Id say its quite important. I think that my life would be a little boring without it. As I said, I enjoy going to discos with my friends. Without music, wed probably sit and chat in cafes. I would also not be

、 able to be so relaxed while studying on my own. In the evenings, usually between seven and ten. Later if Im at a club. Then, I might listen to music until two in the morning. No, I dont. My parents were keen for me to play the piano, but I never really developed an aptitude for it. They were quite

、upset. I really admire people who can play a musical instrument, but Im not to worried about the fact that I cant. 2 【正确答案】 The traditional event that I would like to describe is that of dragon boat racing. There is a big competition each year and teams from all over the world come to Hong Kong to p

、articipate in it. I have been to watch it a few times and have really enjoyed myself each time. The boats are decorated in traditional styles and, of course, the front of each boat is cut into the shape of a roaring dragons head. The oarsmen there are only a few womens teams need to be very strong a

、nd train for a long time before the event. The crowds are always very large and many people wear dragon badges or hats. There are always a few people who wear a headdress like a dragons head. Although the dragon boat racing is the main event, there are also many stalls selling various itemsand snack

、s and drinks for the crowds. 3 【正确答案】 In some ways they are, but I think that in more ways they are not. Hong Kong is a very modem place. People are mainly concerned with business and making money. On the other hand, it is possible to find people who are very traditional in their lifestyles and ways

、 of thinking. These are not only old people some are my age. If you take China as a whole, I think that higher proportion of people are traditional, but most are not. Chinese women traditionally wear a qi pao. Actually cheongsam, only younger women Qipao tend to wear them at traditional events, sinc

、e the cut of the dress is not really for older ladies. Men dont wear traditional Chinese clothes, but they do usually dress smartly in suits. As for food, most Chinese people including those from Hong Kong eat certain kinds of food during traditional events. For example, almost all people eat moon c

、akes at some point during the Moon Festival in autumn. I think that the big difference is that people take the traditional events much more seriously, whereas they tend to treat modem events as a time to have fun. It might sound a little strange, but during traditional events, there is a long list o

、f things that people should do and these things should be done in certain ways. However, when celebrating more modem festivals and celebrations, people take them less seriously and dont follow protocol as much. For example, a Chinese wedding is highly orchestrated. Everyone knows that they have to d

、o certain things at certain times with given people. To be honest, I dont think any are in danger of disappearing in the foreseeable future. The simple fact is that there are 1.3 billion Chinese people and so the chances of any aspect of Chinese culture disappearing are remote. However, I do think t

、hat certain aspects of traditions are fading. For example, Chinese weddings are much the same as before, but an increasing number of brides are choosing to wear white Western-style dresses rather than traditional red Chinese ones. The tradition of wearing a special bridal gown remains, but the gown

、itself is changing. I think that its mainly sentimental. People like to maintain links with the past. It gives them a sense of identity. At the same time, people like to try new things new ways of doing things so what often happens is that a traditional event, celebration or festival becomes modifie

、d in some way as I mentioned with the example of wedding dresses. I also think that by maintaining traditions, people can show their origins even when they are in a new or foreign land. One problem of maintaining traditions is that they tend to be exclusive. People who follow a certain tradition often make a point of demonstrating how different they are to other people, which could be problematic. I think that people should work to make traditions more inclusive.
