、he bar chart shows the top ten countries that generated and used electricity in 2014 measured in billions of KiloWatt hours (bkWh). The countries are China, the US, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and the Republic of Korea. We can clearly see that China and the USA were, by far

、, the largest producers and consumers of power with a production amount of 5,398 bkWh and 4,099 bkWh, respectively. Regarding consumption, they were 5,322 bkWh and 3,866. The other eight countries, had a production ranging from 1,057 bkWh(Russia) to the smallest being 485.1 bkWh(Korea). Usage figure

、s were between 1,038 bkWh and 449.5 bkWh. If we add all of these up together they were still less than the top two combined. In summary, it is obvious that power consumption was not related to population. The US had two thirds less people than China and yet still needed a similar amount of power. (

The main reaso

、n behind this, I believe, there are simply too many people in the world. The population is forever expanding and taking up valuable space along with it. This means that the land available for agricultural use is getting smaller and is incapable of sustaining the food production needed. Take China as

、 an example. It has, by far, the largest population on the planet, with the same amount of space as the USA. A difference of over 1 billion people. Another contributory factor is that it is only generally the western advanced industrialised countries that are reaping the benefits of the advances and

、 arent really sharing these to the wider community. The USA is a prime example of this, by not allowing its genetically modified seeds out of the country unless an extremely high price is paid, which is often unaffordable by poorer countries. The easiest way, in my opinion, is for the technology to

、be shared at a reasonable cost around the world and not to be horded by one or two rich nations. It is imperative that there is balance among the food production so that all corners of the world can get equal access to technologies that will help them. This is the job of governments. Organisations s

、uch as the WTO should pressure governments to move towards this outcome, like they have been with pollution and global warming. It is imperative for the survival of the human race as well as the planet. (276 words) 2 It is tragic to see that, despite our ability to produce enough food to feed the en

、tire world many times over, millions of people remain in a state of hunger or famine. In this essay, I will examine some of the contributing factors to world hunger, and postulate potential solutions. In looking at the countries with the most severe hunger issues, such as Sudan, and the Republic of

、Congo, one can see that the primary factor that contributes to starvation or undernourishment is related to poor management of government funds and agricultural programs, or outright corruption that deprives the people of their needs. This can be seen in many probes into various aid packages that ha

、ve been sent to impoverished African nations, where it was discovered that money that was given to the government went into the pockets of high-ranking officials, and even food deliveries were either stockpiled or resold for a profit. In other situations, the lack of food is the result of corporate

、greed, as with Monsantos seed patents. Being the largest agricultural company in the world, Monsanto owns a majority of the genetic code for most food crops and its seeds are engineered to be sterile after one crop yield with their powerful litigation efforts. This means that it has a stranglehold o

、ver the food supplies of many developing countries. This has had devastating effects in India, where farmers convinced to use Monsanto corn seeds found themselves more impoverished, and thus less able to afford food, when they found that the seeds they purchased required far more resources to grow,

、and the subsequent yields caused a collapse of their crop prices. There are several approaches to combating world hunger. One likely approach is for developed nations to enforce stricter regulations when dealing with countries receiving aid, such as demanding oversight of the distribution of food an

、d money to local people. Another approach would be for consumers in developed nations to be more aware of the food they purchase. For example, purchasing locally grown foods will discourage the deportation of food from poorer nations, allowing these countries to keep more for themselves rather than export it for the financial benefit of a small number of companies.
