Its my pleasure to welcome Peter Brook from the New Zealand Kiwi Fruit Marketing Broad, the KMB for short. Good to have you. Peter First of all, for t

    9、hose people who may not have seen kiwi fruit, what are they? Man: Well, they are small green round fruit and theyre delicious. New Zealand now exports them more than any other fruit and vegetable, so kiwi fruit are very important to us economically. Of course, New Zealand is famous for lamp and wool

    10、 production and trade involves these are still good. And these products are actually the biggest area in terms of export income. Woman: I see. Then can you tell me why the KMB was started? Man: Well, some years ago, kiwi fruit farmer found they were producing more fruit but the market was growing at

    11、 the same rate. So the KMB was formed, partly to set up distribution to retailers and so on within New Zealand, but also to find more customers for kiwi fruit around the world, in other words, to make the export market bigger. Woman: I see. Now what do you do to find more customers around the world

    12、for a particular product, especially one which people have probably never seen before? Man: Well, there are a number of ways of doing this. Some marketing broads might do an international advertising campaign, so that when anybody in one of the target countries watches TV, they are certain to see th

    13、e product. Thats fine, but of course it costs a lot and its not really suitable for our product. So we will approach it in a different way. We want to be certain that anyone who buys our product anywhere in the world has a guarantee that what theyre buying is of the highest quality. This is the best

    14、 long-term policy. You can do all kinds of things, like selling at cost price at the beginning so that your product is cheaper than other competitors, but we didnt think that will present the right image and in the end, you only have to rise your price anyway. Woman: So everything all comes down to

    15、how good your product is. Man: Thats right. Woman: And where do most export of kiwi fruit go? Man: Our market is expanding all the time. Our oldest market is in Europe and Japan, but demand is growing in Middle East and KoreA Our latest destinations are South America and Vietnam. Woman: Really, so k

    16、iwi fruit are becoming truly international. Man: Yes. And kiwi fruit makes up currently 25% of all fruit exported by New Zealand. Woman: Do you expect any rise? Man: Yes, to 32% in five years time, a 7% increase we hope. Woman: How does the fruit get from the growers to the customers? Man: Most kiwi

    17、 fruits are exported by sea though some are sent by air flight to Australia The fruit comesinto the ports by truck after being packed by the growers at local packing stations. There is a plan forexpress rail transport in the future which should speed up things a bit more. Woman: And after the fruit

    18、arrive at the ports? Man: It stores on the ships in large wooden boxes. We send 15 million boxes out of the country on 80 ships, but thats not enough. We are quite happy with the design of the boxes and we know we got exactly the right temparation on board for the fruit. In other words, our technolo

    19、gy isnt a problem. We simply need more ships to work efficiently as wed like to. Woman: How do you see the future developing? Man: We hope to work out the ways to send the fruits even more quickly to our export markets to keep them as fresh as possible. Woman: Thank you Peter. One last question. Is

    20、kiwi fruit popular in New Zealand? Man: Yes. In fact it recently becomes the second biggest seller on the whole market. Its overtaken the sales of pears and it will be a little while before we overtake apples.
