、, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1 NOTEReferences to Sections 15 and 14 in 3.1.3 and 3.1.5, respectively, were corrected editorially in 2010.1. Scope

、1.1 This specification covers bare compact round concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from uncoated round copper wiresfor general use for electrical purposes. These conductors shall be constructed with a central core surrounded by one or more layersof helically laid compacted wires (Explanatory N

Mass and Resistance8.1 The mass per unit length a

、nd dc electrical resistance of a compact round conductor are greater than the total of thesecharacteristics of the compressed wires composing the finished conductor, depending upon the lay. The standard increment of massper unit length and electrical resistance shall be taken as 2 %. The nominal mas

、s per unit length and dc resistance are shown inTable 1. When the dc resistance is measured at other than 20C, it shall be corrected by using the multiplying factors given in Table2.8.2 In cases where the lay is definitely known, the increment may be calculated if desired (Explanatory Note 3).8.3 Fo

、r conductors to be used in covered or insulated wires or cables, direct current (DC) resistance measurement may be usedinstead of the method outlined in Section 9, to determine compliance with this specification.9. Variation in Area9.1 The cross-sectional area of the compact round conductor shall be

、 not less than 98 % of the cross-sectional area as specifiedin Column 1 of Table 1.9.2 The manufacturer shall determine the cross-sectional area by Test Method B263. In applying this method, the increment inmass per unit length resulting from stranding may be the applicable value specified in 9.1 or

、 may be calculated from the measureddimensions of the sample under test. In case of question regarding area compliance, the actual mass per unit length increment dueto stranding shall be calculated.10. Variation in Diameter10.1 The average diameter of the compact-round conductor shall not vary by mo

、re than +1 % and 2 % from the diameterspecified in Table 1.11. Finish11.1 The conductor surface shall be smooth and free of imperfections not consistent with the best commercial practice.12. Physical and Electrical Tests12.1 Tests for the physical and electrical properties of wires composing the con

、ductors shall be made before stranding inaccordance with Specification B3 (Explanatory Note 4 and Note 5).13. Requirements for Wires13.1 Before stranding and compacting the copper wire shall meet all of the requirements of Specification B3.13.2 Wire shaped before stranding shall meet the requirement

、s of Specification B3, except for diameter tolerance. Theelongation requirement shall be the same as round wires of equal nominal area. The area tolerance for shaped wires shall be suchthat the finished conductor conforms to Section 10 of this specification.TABLE 2 Temperature Correction Factors for

、copperconductorEXPLANATORY NOTESNOTE 1In this specification only compact round concentric-lay-stranded conductor constructions are specifically designated. Constructions not includedin this specification should be specifically agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser when placing the o

、rder.NOTE 2For definitions of terms relating to conductors, reference should be made to Terminology B354.NOTE 3The increment of mass or electrical resistance of a completed concentric-lay-stranded conductor, k, in percent, is:k 5100m 21!where m is the stranding factor, and is the ratio of the mass o

、r electrical resistance of a unit length of stranded conductor to that of a solid conductorof the same cross-sectional area or of a stranded conductor with infinite length of lay, that is, all wires parallel to the conductor axis. The stranding factorm for the completed stranded conductor is the num

、erical average of the stranding factors for each of the individual wires in the conductor, including thestraight core wire, if any (for which the stranding factor is unity). The stranding factor, mind, for any given wire in a concentric-lay-stranded conductoris:mind5=119.8696/n2!where n = (length of

、 lay)/diameter of helical path of the wire. The derivation of the above as given in NBS Handbook 1003 is based on round wire constructions which are applicable to compacted wireconstructions.NOTE 4Individual wires are not to be unlaid from compact round conductors for testing purposes. The physical p

、roperties of the individual compactedwires will be altered by the deformation brought about by compacting, unlaying, and straightening for test.NOTE 5To test stranded conductors for tensile strength successfully as a unit requires adequate means of gripping the ends of the test specimen withoutcausi

、ng damage that may result in failure below the actual strength of the conductor. Various means are available, such as compression sleeves, splitsleeves, and preformed grips, but ordinary jaws or clamping devices usually are not suitable.ASTM International takes no position respecting the validity of

Users of this standard are expressly advised that determination of the validity of any such patent rights, and the riskof infringement of such rights, are entirely their own responsibility. This standard is subject to
