The position of the hard-drawncopper wires and the copper-clad steel wires in the conductorcross section shall be as shown in Fig. 1.4.2 Be

、fore stranding, the wire used shall meet the require-ments of Specifications B 1 and B 227 that are applicable to itstype.5. Joints5.1 CopperWelds and brazes may be made in copper rodsor in copper wires prior to final drawing. Joints may not bemade in the finished copper wires composing concentric-l

、ay-stranded composite conductors containing a total of sevenwires or less. In other conductors, welds and brazes may bemade in the finished individual copper wires composing theconductor, but shall be not closer than 50 ft (15 m) to any otherjoint in the same layer in the conductor.5.2 Copper-Clad S

、teelJoints or splices may be made inthe finished individual copper-clad steel wires composingconcentric-lay-stranded conductors, provided that such jointsor splices have a protection equivalent to that of the wire itselfand that they do not decrease the strength of the finishedstranded conductor bel

、ow the minimum breaking strengthshown in Table 1. Such joints or splices shall be not closer than50 ft (15 m) to any other joint in the same layer in theconductor (Explanatory Note 1).6. Lay6.1 For Types A, C, and D conductors, the preferred lay isapproximately 16.5 times the outside diameter of the

、 com-pleted conductor, but shall be not less than 13 nor more than 20times this diameter.6.2 For all other types, the preferred lay of a layer of wiresis 13.5 times the outside diameter of that layer, but shall be notless than 10 nor more than 16 times this diameter.6.3 The direction of lay of the o

、uter layer shall be left-handunless the direction of lay is specified otherwise by thepurchaser.6.4 The direction of lay shall be reversed in successivelayers.6.5 All wires in the conductor shall lie naturally in their truepositions in the completed conductor. They shall tend to remainin position wh

、en the conductor is cut at any point and shallpermit restranding by hand after being forcibly unraveled at theend of the conductor.7. Construction7.1 The numbers and diameters of wires in the various typesof concentric-lay-stranded composite conductors shall conformto the requirements prescribed in

、Table 1 (Explanatory Note 2).8. Physical and Electrical Tests8.1 Tests for the physical and electrical properties of wirescomposing concentric-lay-stranded composite conductors shallbe made before but not after stranding.8.2 At the option of the purchaser or his representative, tension and elongation

、 tests on wires before stranding may bewaived, and the completed conductor may be tested as a unit. The breaking strength of the conductors so tested shall be notless than the rated strength values shown in Table 2. The freelength between grips of the test specimen shall be not less than24 in. (0.61

、m), and care shall be taken to ensure that the wiresin the conductor are evenly gripped during the test (Explana-tory Note 3).9. Density9.1 For the purpose of calculating weights, cross sections, and so forth, the density of the copper shall be taken as 8.89g/cm3at 20C (Explanatory Note 4 and Table 2

Mass and Resistance10.1 The mass and electrical resistance of a unit length ofstranded conductor are a function of the length of lay. Theapproximate mass and electrical resistance may be determinedusing the standard increments s

、hown in Table 3. When greateraccuracy is desired, the increment based on the specific lay ofthe conductor may be calculated (Explanatory Note 6). Refer-ence information is shown in Appendix X1.11. Variation in Area11.1 The area of cross section of the completed conductorshall be not less than 98 % o

、f the nominal area. The area ofcross section of a conductor shall be considered to be the sumof the cross-sectional areas of its component wires at any pointwhen measured perpendicularly to their axes (ExplanatoryNote 8).12. Finish12.1 The conductor shall be free of all imperfections notconsistent w

、ith the best commercial practice.13. Inspection13.1 Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchaseorder, the manufacturer shall be responsible for the perfor-mance of all inspection and test requirements specified.13.2 All inspections and tests shall be made at the place ofmanufacture unless

、 otherwise especially agreed to between themanufacturer and the purchaser at the time of the purchase.13.3 The manufacturer shall afford the inspector represent-ing the purchaser all reasonable manufacturers facilities nec-essary to ensure that the material is being furnished inaccordance with this

、specification.14. Packaging and Shipping14.1 Package sizes for conductors shall be agreed upon bythe manufacturer and the purchaser in the placing of individualorders (Explanatory Note 9).14.2 The conductors shall be protected against damage inordinary handling and shipping. If heavy wood lagging is

、required, it shall be specified by the purchaser at the time ofpurchase.15. Marking15.1 The net mass, length (or lengths, and number oflengths, if more than one length is included in the package),size, type of conductor, purchase order number, and any othermarks required by the purchase order shall

、be marked on a tagattached to the end of the conductor inside of the package. Thesame information, together with the manufacturers serialnumber (if any) and all shipping marks required by thepurchaser, shall appear on the outside of each package.16. Two

、 types of joints areused and are described as follows:(a) Weld-Annealed JointsAfter butt welding, the wire is annealed fora distance of approximately 5 in. (127 mm) on each side of the weld. Theweld then is protected from corrosion with a snug-fitting seamless coppersleeve that extends at least38 in

、. (9.5 mm) on each side of the weld andthat is thoroughly sealed to the wire with solder. The wall thickness of thesleeve is at least 10 % of the radius of the wire. This joint has a tensile strength of approximately 60 000 psi (415 MPa).This is less than the strength of the individual wires, but an

、allowance ismade for this in the rated strength of the conductor as a whole. Thecompleted conductor when containing such joints is required to have thefull rated strength. This type of joint is only slightly larger than the wire itself and isapplicable for 7-wire composite conductors (except Types F

、and G) andfor 12- and 19-wire composite conductors.(b) Compression-Weld JointsCompression-weld joints differ fromweld-annealed joints in that the wire is not annealed after the butt-weldingoperation, but is reinforced with a hard-drawn, seamless, silicon-tinbronze sleeve which is applied by means of

、 a hydraulic compressor overthe weld. This sleeve is covered with solder so as to completely seal theends. These sleeves have a wall thickness of 25 to 50 % of the radius ofthe wire, depending on wire size. Their use is usually limited to 3-wireconductors where the relatively large diameter is not o

、bjectionablealthough they may be used also in Type F conductors. This joint developsthe full strength of the wire.NOTE 2For definitions of terms relating to conductors, referenceshould be made to (1) ANSI C42.35-latest revision and (2) TerminologyB 354.NOTE 3To test stranded conductors for tensile s

、trength successfullyas a unit requires an adequate means of gripping the ends of the testspecimen. Various means are available, such as a long tube or socket intowhich the conductor may be soldered, or in which, after insertion, theconductors may be swaged or pressed without serious distortion. Ordi

、naryjaws or clamping devices usually are not suitable. The conductor testingfacilities of many commercial laboratories are limited to a breakingstrength of 30 000 lb (13.6 Mg) or less. Consequently, it may not befeasible to test the very large-sized conductors as a unit. Where such isimperative, special arrangements for the testing shall be agreed uponbetween the manufacturer and the purchaser.NOTE 4The value of density of copper is in accordance with theInternational Annealed Copper Standard. As pointed out in the discussionof this subject in NBS Handbook 100 of th
