、oatings, linings, and pavements are usedto improve hydraulic characteristics, corrosion resistance, orabrasion resistance, or a combination thereof. Generally, coat-ings improve corrosion resistance and are especially effectiveon the outside (soil side) of the pipe. While coatings improveabrasion re

、sistance to varying degrees, pavements generallyare used where abrasion is a significant consideration. Pave-ments improve abrasion resistance, protect the metallic andother coatings, and increase corrosion resistance. Smoothpavements, even though they typically cover only the invert ofthe pipe, imp

、rove hydraulic flow characteristics. Full liningsand pavements, generally, provide all three benefits.4.2 Applications:4.2.1 Asphalt, polymer-modified asphalt, and polymer pro-vide excellent corrosion resistance to the outside (soil side) ofthe pipe. These materials provide varying degrees of intern

、al(water side) corrosion protection depending on the severity ofabrasive flow conditions. Polymer-modified asphalt and poly-mer coatings provide longer-term protection than asphalt inmore abrasive conditions.4.2.2 Asphalt pavements are used for abrasive conditions.Where conditions involve repeated h

、igh flow velocities movinga heavy bed load of gravel or rocks, or both, concretepavements are appropriate (see Specification A979/A979M).4.2.3 Full asphalt linings enhance hydraulics while provid-ing a completely “paved” interior. Full concrete linings arehigh-strength concrete that provides a linin

、g similar in thick-ness to asphalt linings. They enhance hydraulic performanceand offer abrasion protection, which is not as effective as theabrasion protection offered by a thicker concrete pavement.5. Classification5.1 The post-applied coatings, pavings, and linings aredescribed in this section as
