、Designation: A499 15Standard Specification forSteel Bars and Shapes, Carbon Rolled from “T” Rails1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A499; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision.

、A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers carbon steel bars and

、 shapesproduced from standard rail steel. These bars are furnished inthe as-wrought condition intended for structural use, or bar andshape uses, where high tensile properties are applicable. Thesematerials are available in four strength levels as Grade 50,Grade 60, Grade 70, and Grade 80.1.2 The val

、ues stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.2. General Requirements5.1 Material furnished under this specification shall con-form to the applicable requirements of the current edition ofSpecification A29/A29M, unless otherwise provided herein.6. Materials and Manufacture6.1 MaterialThe material shall be hot wrought fromstandard section “

、T” rails. No other materials, such as thoseknown by the terms “rerolled,” “rail steel equivalent,” or “railsteel quality,” shall be substituted.6.2 Hot FormingThe material shall be produced by hotforming slit railroad rail parts to yield straight lengths in thesections and nominal sizes specified in

、 3.1.1.6.3 Condition:6.3.1 The material shall be furnished hot wrought, aswrought.6.3.2 The material shall be furnished in cut lengths or rangesof random lengths, as specified by the purchaser.7. Chemical Composition7.1 The chemical composition of rails does not changeduring use in track, reheating,

、 slitting or rolling; consequently, the composition of rail steel products will fall within the limitsspecified in Specification A1 for standard section “T” rails ofbasic-oxygen or electric-furnace process.7.2 Rail steel products are not supplied to definite compo-sition limits. By mutual agreement w

、ith the manufacturer, material may be supplied from rails with a desired range ofcarbon and manganese when such rails are available.8. Mechanical Properties8.1 RequirementsThe material as represented by the testspecimens shall conform to the tensile or hardness require-ments specified in Table 1.8.2

、Test SpecimensTest specimens may be taken from afull section or a machined section.8.3 Number of TestsOne tension test or one hardness test,at the manufacturers option, shall be made from each lot.Alotshall consist of one section of the same size produced in onecontinuous shift (turn) of operation (

、normally an 8-h period).9. Dimensions and Permissible Variations9.1 DimensionsThe permissible variations in dimensionsshall be in accordance with the requirements specified inTables 2-7. Due to differences in mill facilities, tolerances ofspecial bar sections vary among the manufacturers and suchtol

、erances are subject to agreement between manufacturer andpurchaser.9.2 LengthThe permissible variations for length shall bein accordance with the requirements specified in Table 8.9.3 StraightnessVariations in straightness shall not exceed14 in.
