SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers a portable aviation fuel contamination test kit that is used to perform ASTM In

Unless otherwise noted herein or in the contract, in the event of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein, the text of this document ta

    18、kes precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Description. The one person-portable test kit is intended for use in the field to perform the following tests on petroleum products used fo

    19、r aviation: a. American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity/density. b. The kit shall consist of the components and instructions necessary

    20、to perform not less than 10 (each) of the above tests, on individual samples, without replenishment of supplies. 3.1.1 Construction. The test kit furnished under this specification shall be in accordance with the applicable drawings (TA57K6311) or as specified by the contracting authority. The drawi

    21、ngs forming a part of this specification are end product drawings. 3.2 First article. When specified (see 6.2), a sample kit shall be subjected to first article inspection in accordance with 4.2. 3.3 Performance characteristics. 3.3.1 Density. The test kit shall provide all components and materials

    22、necessary to determine density per ISO 15212 utilizing a hand held density meter compensating for temperature. The density meter shall be explosion proof and acceptable for use with military jet fuels, such as JP8 (MIL-DTL-83133), Jet A/A-1 (ASTM D 1655), and JP5 (MIL-DTL-5624). The density meter sh

    23、all include a conversion to API gravity. 3.3.1.1 Spare parts. The kit shall also include one spare battery for the density meter, a spare filling tube, and 10 spare 2 ml Luer syringes. 3.3.2 Particulate contaminants. The test kit shall provide all components and materials necessary to determine vari

    24、ations in the level of particulate contaminants in aviation turbine fuels by the filter membrane color rating method in accordance with ASTM D 2276. It shall also provide five (each) additional match weight monitors as spares. A means to secure the monitors once the case is opened the kit shall be i

    25、ncluded. 3.3.2.1 Sample bottle. The sample bottle shall have a minimum capacity of 1,000 milliliters (ml) (0.264 gallon (gal) with graduated subdivisions not greater than 50 ml (0.0132 gal). The graduations shall be permanently marked on the bottle by silk-screening or other permanent method of mark

    26、ing. 3.3.2.2 Solvent dispenser bottle. The solvent dispenser shall have a minimum capacity of 250 ml (0.066 gal) and shall dispense a fine, steady stream when squeezed. The bottle shall include a screw top closure. The spout cap for the tip shall be red and captive, and the closure shall be linerles

    27、s, non-contaminating, and leak-proof. Materials used shall be capable of prolonged storage of petroleum ether. 3.3.2.3 Antiseize tape. The antiseize tape shall be in. (1.27 cm) wide, contained on a spool, and conform to A-A-58092. 3.3.2.4 Wrench. The wrench shall be an adjustable type, 8 in. (20 cm)

The test kit shall provide the components necessary to determine the free-water content of fuel, using the Aqua-Glo method, in accordance wi

    29、th ASTM D 3240 (see 4.5.1.3). Support equipment required for testing include tweezers, free water pads, jewelers screwdriver, and a stainless steel monitor. 3.3.3.1 Spare parts. The kit shall also include one spare internal battery for the detector (GTP-2324), a 9 volt battery for the meter, and one

    30、 spare calibration standards set. 3.4 Carrying case. A carrying case, capable of containing all items needed to perform the required tests, shall be supplied. The carrying case shall be sufficiently waterproof and water vapor-proof to protect all kit items when sprayed continuously with water (see 4

    31、.5.3.1). A valve or other suitable means of pressure relief shall be installed for aircraft transportability. The valve or other pressure relief mechanism shall be placed such that carrying of the case or use of the kit shall not be hindered. The carrying case shall be fabricated so that all items a

    32、re securely restrained and adequately cushioned to prevent damage during transit. The carrying case shall not be greater than 16.63 in. (42.2 cm) (H) x 20.00 in. (50.8 cm) (W) x 15.00 in. (38.1 cm) (D). The carrying case shall be provided with handles or grasp areas, and catches or latches designed

    33、to allow transport and operation by personnel wearing arctic mittens. 3.4.1 Weight. The weight of the kit, the carrying case fully supplied with its items, shall not exceed 42 lbs. (19.1 kg). 3.5 Kit loading diagram. A diagram or equivalent means of identifying equipment placement in the kit shall b

    34、e supplied. The loading diagrams shall be shown on a durable plate, affixed to the inside of the units cover, or by other suitable means to easily identify storage locations and be legible for the life of the unit. 3.6 Environmental requirements. 3.6.1 Climatic. The test kit shall be capable of perf

    35、orming in any ambient temperature from 35 2 F to 120 2 F (2 1 C to 49 1 C) (see 4.5.3.3 and 4.5.3.5). When placed in storage, the test kit shall not be damaged in any ambient temperature from -25 2 F to 145 2 F (-32 1 C to 63 1 C) (see 4.5.3.2 and 4.5.3.4). 3.6.2 Fungus resistance. Where possible, m

    36、oisture and fungus-resistant materials shall be used. Where this is not possible, materials shall be coated for protection. 3.6.3 Transportability. With exception of the free-water detector, the kit shall be capable of withstanding the vibration, stress and shock encountered when transported by all

    37、standard modes of transportation (see 4.5.4). 3.7 Human factors. The construction shall foster effective performance of operating procedures, an effective personnel safety and health environment, and minimize factors that contribute to increased operator error. The unit shall incorporate protection

    38、from electrical, thermal, mechanical, and other potential hazards.     39、t ensure safety and ease of use. The equipment shall represent the simplest design consistent with functional requirements. 3.7.1 Accessibility. Compartment access and grasp areas shall reflect compatibility with the Clothing and Personal Equipment (C/PE) of personnel using and maintaining equipment

    40、, under the environmental conditions specified herein. Grasp areas shall also be located to provide clearance from obstructions, and shall not interfere with operation or maintenance of the unit. The proper orientation of ancillary items and components for stowage on the unit shall be made obvious,

    41、either through compartment or fixture design or by means of appropriate labels (see 4.5.2). 3.7.2 Safety. The construction shall incorporate methods to protect personnel from shock hazards, to include consideration of ground currents and voltage limits (possible arcing) according to NFPA 70. Adequat

    42、e safe-guards shall be incorporated into the kit and its components so that personnel shall not be exposed to concentrations of toxic or corrosive substances. Equipment that, in normal operation, exposes personnel to surface temperatures greater than 130 2 F (54 1 C) for prolonged contact or handlin

    43、g, or 140 2 F (60 1 C) for momentary contact, shall be appropriately guarded. Except where functionally required, exposed surfaces shall be free from burrs, sharp edges and corners, or other features that present a personnel safety hazard; or shall be shielded against contact. Danger or caution sign

    44、s, labels, and markings shall be used to warn of potential or specific hazards according to NEMA Z535.2. 3.7.3 Labeling. To avoid hazardous or unsafe operation, labels, legends, instruction placards, signs, markings, or combinations of all shall be provided for personnel to identify, interpret and f

    45、ollow procedures. Instructions for test methods shall be clearly visible, and shall not be damaged, or made illegible, by frequent use, extended storage, or cited environmental conditions. Label characteristics shall be consistent with the accuracy of identification required, the time available for

    46、recognition, and the appropriate response, the distance at which the labels must be read, and in accordance with the requirements of NEMA Z535.2. Labels shall be permanent and have a high contrast, foreground to background. 3.8 Markings. The kit shall be identified in accordance with MIL-STD-130 to

    47、include item nomenclature, NSN (National Stock Number), manufacturers part number, CAGE (Commercial and Government Entity), contract number and serial number. 3.9 Materials. The manufacturer shall select materials capable of meeting all the operational and environmental requirements specified herein

    48、. Kit components shall not incorporate readily breakable material except where no alternative is available such as glass for optical lenses.
