INTRODUCTION This test is intended to verify the ability of an optical f

    25、iber cable to perform satisfactorily as required by Detail Specifications (a) while undergoing tensile and bending forces and (b) after undergoing tensile and bending forces. NOTE: This procedure is frequently used in concert with FOTP-38, Measurement of Fiber Strain in Cables Under Tensile Load. Us

    26、ers are cautioned that the Detail Specification generally inserts specific steps from FOTP-38 into the procedure of this FOTP. 2. APPARATUS 3.1 A suitable device for measuring optical power transmission is required. (See paragraph 5.3). 3.2 A suitable device is necessary to apply a tensile load to the test ca

    29、ble. An example of the basic testing apparatus and test set-up is shown schematically, in Figure 1.     31、apparatus (End A) shall essentially consist of a minimum of two rotating sheaves mounted on an axle. 3.2.3 Unless otherwise specified by the Detail Specification, the sheave diameter shall be less than or equal to 40X the cable outside diameter. For cables less than 14 mm (0.55 in) in outer diameter

    32、, a universal sheave diameter of 560 mm (22 in) may be used. 3.2.4 Two fixed-position mandrels shall be used, one on each end of the cable sample under test, to couple the optical fibers to the other cable components, and to apply the tensile force to the cable. Note: Another common test set-up is t

    33、o mount the fixed mandrels on the same movable axel as the sheaves specified in 3.2.2. See subclause 5.6 for guidance on loading different test set-up configurations. 3.2.5 The mandrels used to couple the fiber and cable shall be large enough to avoid inducing loss in the cable wrapped around them.

    34、Page 2 TIA-455-33-B 3.2.6 The length between ends A and B (see Figure 1) of the test apparatus shall be such that a minimum total sample length of 100 meters (330 feet) can be achieved with a minimum of five turns of cable. 3.2.7 The tensile load shall be applied by a tensile machine or similar devi

    35、ce, with the applied force measured by a load cell or dynamometer having a minimum accuracy of 5% of the total tensile load to be applied. NOTE: Alternative test configurations are acceptable provided that the required total length to be stressed can be accommodated and the required tensile loads ca

    36、n be attained and properly distributed throughout the cable. For example, additional sheaves could be used with more strands to reduce the total length of the apparatus; also, all sheaves could be mounted on fixed shafts with force applied to pull only one cable end. 4. SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS The ca

    37、ble length under tensile load shall be as per 3.2.6. 5.     38、ndrels per Figure 1) Unloaded (after load has been relieved) X Page 3 TIA/EIA-455-33-B 5.1.2 Test Conditions 5.1.2.1 Test Condition I provides the optical power transmission of the cable in the extended, non-loaded condition on the tensile tester. 5.1.2.2 Test Condition II is used to determine optic

    39、al changes produced by continuous (static) loading as might be expected during cable use. Test Condition II may be a single load or a set of loads. The default Test Condition II loading for this procedure is to apply the lowest load subsequently followed by increasingly higher loads at which optical

    40、 measurements are to be made. In cases where a high load is designed to represent a rated installation load, and a correspondingly lower load is to represent post-installation loading, the higher load shall be applied first. Note: Results from Test Condition II allow a comparison and points out chan

    41、ges in optical power transmission and attenuation between the non-loaded versus loaded test conditions. 5.1.2.3 Test Condition III is a check to assure that any changes induced by short-term loading are reversible. 5.1.3 Measurement conditions and performance limits shall be as established by approp

    42、riate individual Detail Specifications, depending upon design and intended application of the particular fiber optic cable. 5.2 Unless otherwise specified, the test cable shall be preconditioned for 24 hours at standard atmospheric conditions as outlined in Recommended Standard EIA/TIA-455B and test

    43、ed under these conditions. 5.3 Attenuation Change Measurement The cable shall be prepared and tested to check for changes in optical transmittance in accordance with FOTP-20. Alternatively, methods that measure attenuation such as FOTP-78 may be used and the results converted to transmittance values

Methods other than FOTP-20 shall be used only if they provide procedures for measuring at specific wavelengths and are capable of accurately measuring attenuation/transmittance differences smaller than the requirements of the Detail Specification (refer to Paragraphs 5.5 through 5.8) while the cab

    45、le undergoes the Tensile Loading Test. 5.4 Set Up for All Test Conditions 5.4.1 Feed the cable through and around the sheaves and mandrels. The minimum 100 meters (330 feet) tensile load length would involve at least five sheaves and two mandrels for a minimum total of five turns of cable between th

    46、e two ends of the test apparatus. Make a sufficient number of turns (three turns minimum are recommended) of the cable around both fixed mandrels to ensure that the cable will remain in place without slipping during tensile Page 4 TIA-455-33-B loading. Note that it is intended that the cable cross-s

    47、ection should remain fixed during the test (e.g., core should not slip within the jacket). Allow for a short length of cable (approximately 4 meters or approximately 15 feet) at both cable ends to permit accessing optical test equipment. After the cable length is in place, the cable weight will prod

    48、uce a slight tension, which should not exceed 1% of the total test load. 5.4.2 Attach both ends of the cable to the optical test equipment. 5.5 Test Condition I Using the test set up of paragraph 5.4, and with no tensile load applied to the cable, measure the optical power transmission in accordance

    49、 with paragraph 5.3. 5.6 Test Condition II Apply the tensile load specified by the Detail Specification (See 5.6.1 5.6.3). If more than one load is to be applied, apply the minimum load first, unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification. In applying the load, ensure that each strand is subjected to the specified load. Unless otherwise specified, the time needed to reach this required load must be sufficient to prevent jerking or any near-instantaneous loading.
