、o. 2237, formulated under the cognizance of TIA FO-6.3, Subcommittee on Fiber Optic Interconnecting Devices, and TIA FO-6.4, Subcommittee on Fiber Optic Test Methods and Instrumentation.) This FOTP is part of the series of test procedures included within Recommended Standard EIAITIA-455. 1. INTRODUC

、TION The intent of this procedure is to apply an overload torque to twist-type coupling mechanisms. The procedure is applicable to threaded or bayonet twist-type coupling mechanisms. The purpose of the procedure is to establish a safety factor or minimum level of reliability for the overload torque

、capabilities of twist-type and threaded coupling mechanisms. 2. APPARATUS The assembled test apparatus shall be capable of applying a torque, either manually or automatically, to a threaded or bayonet- type coupling nut while the connector adapter is held in place. Figure 1 shows a typica

、l apparatus for applying the torque manually. All or some of the following apparatus components are required for either manual or automatic testing. 3.1 always held in the proper relationship during the test. STAND. Use a stand to insure that the specimen and the torque applicator are 3.2 SPECIMEN H

、OLDER. The specimen holder shall be a floating device to which the specimen under test is mounted, The holder shall be prohibited from rotating, but shall otherwise be capable of moving freely in order to obtain the proper alignment between the coupling and the test specimen. 3.3 COUPLING. Couplings

、 shall be designed to mate with the appropriate specimen under test. The coupling shall clamp the outer shell of the specimen under test in such a manner that the torque is applied orthogonally to the coupling interface without the presence of any bending moment. 3.4 applicator to the specimen under

、 test through the coupling. COUPLING SHAFT. A coupling shaft shall be utilized to connect the torque 3.5 ALIGNMENT MECHANISM. An alignment mechanisms function is to ensure that the coupling shaft is always in the proper position relative to the test specimen. A clearance hole or a simple sleeve bear

Torque shall be applied using a torque wrench, or equivalent, and a gauge, having a torque range no greater than three times the required torque test value. A maximum-reading torque indicator is desirable, but not required. The gauge

、 shall be accurate within 10 percent at the applied torque value. 4. SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS 4.1 SAMPLING. Unless otherwise specified, each specimen shall be assembled according to the manufacturers instructions. The inclusion of fiber and cable is optional. 5. PROCEDURE 5.1 PRECONDITION

、ING. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, precondition each prepared specimen for a period of 4 hours at the standard test conditions specified in EIA/TIA-455A. 5.2 SPECIMEN MOUNTING. Securely mount each specimen under test to the specimen holder using the connectors normal config

、uration mounting. Connectors which are normally free-floating shall be mounted to the connector holder such that the torque will be applied along the proper axis of the connector. 5.3 CONNECTION TO TORQUE APPLICATOR AND GAUGE. Connect the torque applicator to the connector coupling nut through the c

、oupling, coupling shaft and alignment mechanism. 5.4 TORQUE LOADING. Using the torque applicator, smoothly apply the specified torque to the coupling nut at a nominal rate such that there is no element of impact loading. Unless otherwise specified, maintain the torque for a minimum period of 15 seco

、nds. 5.5 POST TEST EXAMINATION. Remove the torque load and remove the test specimen from the mounting. Unless otherwise specified, visually examine specimens and their component parts in accordance with the requirements of FOTP-13. Check for evidence of cracking, bending or permanent deformation to

、any of the coupling features (e.g., tabs slots, threads). Check for other damage which might impair its function, and any pass/fail criteria that may be specified in the Detail Specification. 6. IEC Reference is made to IEC-874-1, Third Edition3 “Connectors for optical fibres and cables,

、 Generic specification.“ Clause 4.5.15, “Coupling Proof Torque“ of IEC-874-1, Third Edition, defines a mechanical test and measurement procedure which, insofar as can be determined, is the same as the test defined in FOTP-184. It is believed that this IEC method was originally created to test electr

、ical connectors and was later adapted to fiber optic connectors. Also it should be noted that a sample apparatus is included in the FOTP but not in the IEC document. A2. CCITT There are no references to any test equivalent to this FOTP know to exist in CCITT documents. 3. In process of preparation. Pending publication of this revision this test can be found in Clause 4.5.15 of IEC SC86BC069.
