、tandard for Wastewater Technology Wastewater Technology Effluent filters field longevity testing 1 General 1.1 Purpose The purpose of this standard is to establish consistent site selection and data evaluation methods for obtaining field longevity results for septic tank effluent filters. 1.2 Scope

、This Standard provides site selection, auditing, and methods for evaluating the field performance as it relates to longevity of septic tank effluent filters. Only septic tank effluent filters that are certified in accordance with the current version of NSF/ANSI 46 may be certified under this Standar

、d. An effluent filter that has completed third-party testing in compliance with an evaluation, certification and listing protocol equivalent to NSF/ANSI 46 shall be acceptable, provided all data pursuant to the testing is published and the results verify that the device is capable of performance as

、defined in NSF/ANSI 46. 2 Normative references The following documents contain provisions that, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this Standard. At the time of publication, the indicated editions were valid. All of the standards are subject to revision and parties are encourag

、nd devices used in wastewater treatment systems, Section 10 Filtration devices for residential gravity flow septic tank systems 3 Definitions The following are definitions of terms used in this document: 3.1 manufacturer: The entity that develops, designs, and produces septic tank effluent filters.

、3.2 residential: Single family dwellings, occupied on a year round basis. 2014 NSF/ANSI 418-2014 2 3.3 residential wastewater (wastewater): Human body waste and liquid waste generated by the occupants of an individual residence. Flows typically average less than 100 gallons per person per day and re

、sult in a five day BOD5less than 300 mg/l and a total Kjeidahl nitrogen (TKN) less than or equal to 70 mg/l. 3.4 test plan: A written document that describes the procedures for conducting a test according to the requirements of this Standard at a particular field site. At a minimum, the Test Plan in

、cludes detailed instructions for quality assurance and quality control requirements relevant to the particular field site. 3.5 Testing Organization: One or more independent third-party Testing Organizations that is qualified by and under contract to the Verification Organization to implement the Tes

、t Plan including documentation and test reporting to the Verification Organization. 3.6 Verification Organization: The organization responsible for oversight of the Testing Organization in preparation and completion of testing, and in preparation, review and completion of the final report. The Verif

、ication Organization shall have demonstrated experience in the evaluation of residential wastewater treatment systems, development of product test protocols, quality assurance/quality control practices and procedures, and management of field studies and evaluations. 4 Selection of systems 4.1 Number

、 of systems Each manufacturer seeking to verify field longevity under this section shall identify a representative pool of not less than 40 systems suitable for testing. From the pool of systems submitted by the manufacturer, the Verification Organization shall randomly select a minimum of 15 system

、s for testing and not less than five reserve systems for a total of at least 20. At the request of the manufacturer, additional systems selected by the Verification Organization from the pool of 40 prior to initiating sampling under this protocol shall be sampled and the data used in the event there

、 is a need to disqualify more than 5 of the initial 15 systems. 4.2 System requirements All systems shall be representative of residential use as defined in this Standard. Commercial uses or other uses expressly prohibited by a manufacturer in their operation manual shall result in the exclusion of

、a system from use in this Standard. Systems shall be screened to verify that the: system is used in a manner consistent with the manufacturers guidelines; homeowner has granted written permission to evaluate the system pursuant to this Standard; homeowner certifies that they are not being compensate

、d by the manufacturer for being part of the evaluation; homeowner agrees in writing to operate the system in accordance with the operation manual; homeowner gives written permission to the Verification Organization and the Testing Organization to access the property for the purposes of conducting th

、is Standard; and homeowner agrees in writing to refrain from pumping the septic tank and tampering with servicing, or removing the effluent filter for the duration of the evaluation period. 2014 NSF/ANSI 418-2014 3 Systems residences selected for evaluation under this field verification shall be occ

、upied by at least three people for the duration of the study. Intermittent periods of time with a lower occupancy such as may occur during a vacation or normal travel shall not be grounds for disqualification, but shall be recorded in the site log and reported in the final report. However, in no cas

、e shall the facility be occupied by less than three people for cumulatively more than 25% of the test period. 4.3 Field site screening audits The Verification Organization shall audit a minimum of five sites. The manufacturer shall be notified in writing of the systems to be audited and, at their di

、scretion, the manufacturer, should be present at the time of audit. Each site evaluation and audit shall verify that the: system has been in normal operation from the commencement to the conclusion of the monitoring period; system is being used under residential conditions with occupancy of three or

、 more people; system is being used in conformance with the manufacturers recommendations. When, in the course of verifying field performance, a system fails to meet these criteria, or is being operated outside the limits established by the Test Plan, the system shall be disqualified from field perfo

、rmance testing by the Verification Organization. Should a system initially identified for testing be disqualified, the results from a randomly selected reserve system should be substituted for the disqualified system. All data collected shall be reported, however, only the 15 systems identified at t

、he end of the study as the primary systems shall be used to establish the field longevity results. The results of the screening surveys and audits (see 4.2 and 4.3) shall be made in writing and kept on filed by the Verification Organization. Changes in occupancy or the manner of use, which occur ove

、r the period the field evaluation occurs, shall be noted. A summary of these data shall be included in the final report. 5 Filter performance evaluation 5.1 Pre-evaluation assessment 1) The Testing Organization shall conduct pre-evaluation assessments and field site evaluations of systems to be test

、ed under this Standard. 2) Site accessibility shall be assessed to assure the evaluators have adequate access to the system components. An evaluation shall be made of conditions that would make site evaluation difficult or hazardous to those conducting the evaluation (such as the presence of guard a

、nimals, pets, locked gates, etc.). 3) As part of the pre-evaluation assessment the tank shall be verified that it generally meets the physical design requirements (Section 7) of ASTM C1227-12 or (Section 3) of IAPMO Z-1000. 4) An evaluation of the tank, outlet tee or baffle, and effluent filter shal

、l be made. Effluent filters shall have a watertight access riser and cover that extend at least to finished grade to allow access to the filter and the tank compartment for evaluation. 5) The outlet pipe from the tank to the downstream system component shall be evaluated to assure that there is adeq

、uate elevation decline within the pipe to allow free flow to the next system component without a backup of effluent into the septic tank. 2014 NSF/ANSI 418-2014 4 6) The tank configuration, dimensions, presence of baffles, liquid level and outlet invert elevation relative to an established (permanen

、t) vertical benchmark, gallons per inch, etc. shall be recorded. 7) The manufacturer shall confirm that the tank capacity and dimensions and the facility flow at each test site complies with the filter design/use requirements. 8) At the time of the pre-evaluation assessment, a record shall be made of the layout of the system on the property and photos shall be taken of the system for determining the optimum approach for planning the evaluation methods. At this visit, it shall be determined if there are any conditions that might affect
