、msshq.org MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-122i This MSS Standard Practice was developed under the consensus of the MSS Technical Committee 402 and the MSS Coordinating Committee. In addition, this Standard Practice was approved by an ANSI/MSS Consensus Committee and ANSI as an American National Standard. T

、he content of this Standard Practice is the resulting efforts of competent and experienced volunteers to provide an effective, clear, and non-exclusive standard that will benefit the industry as a whole. This MSS Standard Practice describes minimal requirements and is intended as a basis for common

、practice by the manufacturer, the user, and the general public. The existence of an MSS Standard Practice does not in itself preclude the manufacture, sale, or use of products not conforming to the Standard Practice. Mandatory conformance to this Standard Practice is established only by reference in

SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice establishes requirements for plastic industrial ball valves in nominal pipe sizes (NPS) 1/2 through NPS 6, designed for general indus

、trial systems for the distribution of pressurized liquids that are chemically compatible with the piping material. It reflects the industry practice for the design, manufacture, and application of these valves. 1.2 This Standard Practice applies to valves having the ball seal against two self-lubric

、ating seats of the following types: a) True-Union Ball Valves All joint ends have detachable nuts and end connectors so as to facilitate repair or replacement. These types of valves are also known as “double-union” or “dual-union” ball valves. See Figure 1 for illustrative example. b) Single-Union B

、all Valves Only one joint end has detachable nut and end connector, with the other joints being integral to the valve body. See Figure 2 for illustrative example. c) Non-Union Ball Valves All joint ends are integral to the valve body. See Figure 3 for illustrative example. 1.3 This Standard Practice

、 encompasses the following requirements: a) Materials of Construction b) Pressure-Temperature Ratings and Design Requirements c) Commonly Used Laying Length Dimensions d) Safety Features e) Port Size f) Actuator Application Requirements g) Production Tests h) Markings 2. MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION 2.

、1 Plastic materials, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are routinely used as materials of construction for ball valves types indicated in this Standard Practice. Due t

、o the number of grades and classifications of these materials, standard specifications cannot be readily established and are subject to agreement between customer and manufacturer. If intended for use in potable water, the materials should be listed for that use by an independent testing laboratory

、or agency. 2.2 Seals and seats of various materials are commonly used in plastic valves. The purchaser shall ensure the seals and seats specified are compatible with the stated intended use. 2.3 Any lubricants used shall be nontoxic, shall not support the growth of bacteria, and shall have no deteri

、orating effect on the seal or component materials. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1222 3. PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE RATINGS AND DESIGN REQUIREMENTS 3.1 The maximum non-shock pressure-temperature ratings of valves covered by this Standard Practice shall be those established by the manufacturer for the particula

、r design and material. 3.2 The entire valve assembly, including detachable nuts and end connectors, shall be designed to resist, without rupture, a test pressure of: a) 2.1 times the pressure rating for a period of 1000 hours; b) 2.5 times the pressure rating for a period of 1 hour; and c) 3.2 times

、 the pressure rating for a period of 60 seconds. A sample size of 10 valves installed in a simple system shall be considered a representative test. Retests shall be performed when changes to wall thickness, thread strength, or material are made. 3.3 In order to enable the manufacturer to make proper

、 recommendations regarding valve type and material selection, the following information shall be provided by the purchaser or user: a) Valve size b) Type joints/end connections c) Working pressure range d) Working temperature range e) Mode and/or frequency of operation f) Maximum flow rate g) Line s

、hock conditions h) Vacuum conditions i) Use of cleaning fluids j) Environment of valve location (i.e., outdoors, manufacturing facility, chemical plant, etc) 4. LAYING LENGTH DIMENSIONS 4.1 Laying lengths (see Dimension A in Figures 1, 2, and 3), which is the distance the valve occupies between the

、ends of the connecting pipe, are peculiar to the particular manufacturers design and are not specified in this Standard Practice. For the guidance of plastic ball valve users, commonly used laying lengths for true-union ball valves are given in Table 1 as an example of one type of configuration. Con

、sult manufacturers literature for actual laying length dimensions of specific valve configurations indicted in Section 1.2. 5. SAFETY FEATURES 5.1 All ball valves covered by this Standard Practice shall have a design that prevents blowout of internal components (e.g., stem), when either end (upstrea

、m or downstream) is disconnected from the non-pressurized side of the piping system. 5.2 A mechanism shall be available from the manufacturer to allow the valve to be locked into the closed position, to allow maintenance of the downstream system or equipment. This lockout mechanism shall be capable

、of being installed on the valve after installation without modification of the valve itself. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1223 6. PORT SIZE 6.1 All true-union and single-union type valves shall be full-port design; meaning that the flow channel through the ball has an inside diameter that is equal to or

、 larger than that of like-sized Schedule 80 pipe. 6.2 Non-union type valves may be full port (unrestricted flow) or reduced port, as per agreement between customer and manufacturer. 7. ACTUATOR APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS 7.1 Manually operated valves shall be operated by quarter-turn opening levers wit

、h counter-clockwise rotation to open the valve. The lever shall be of sufficient length to operate the valve with a reasonable force, while the valve is pressurized. 7.1.1 Levers shall be marked with the “OPEN” and “CLOSE” direction indicated. 7.2 Pneumatic, hydraulic, pneumatic spring return, hydra

、ulic spring return, or electric actuators shall be sized to be capable of closing and opening the valve against a minimum of 1.5 times the working pressure as shown below: SMT 5.1 Where: T = Minimum operating torque of actuator at open or close M = Average torque at 1.5 times the rated working press

、ure of the valve S = One standard deviation of the torque 8. PRODUCTION TESTS 8.1 Prior to shipment, valves shall be tested in the closed position for seat leakage in both directions of flow. Valves shall also be tested for shell leakage with the ball in such a position as to assure full pressurizat

、ion of the valve shell. The test pressure and fluid shall be according to the manufacturers specification. These production tests shall be designed so as to verify that no leakage occurs. 9. MARKING 9.1 Each valve shall be marked with manufacturers name or trademark, size, material of construction,

、material of seal construction, pressure rating at 73 F (23 C), country of origin, and listings for specific applications (if applicable).
